Samad is the governor of Basra and was briefly mentioned as a PM candidate, so I would say he knows what he's talking about. Quoting: HoodRats North pointed to some news that he had just received from what he referred to as a well placed intelligence source, saying there are concerns that al-Maliki could be assassinated by one of his guards. "Nouri al-Maliki's refusal to step down for his replacement ... has U.S. personnel in Baghdad on very high alert because Maliki's Shiite Praetorian Guard is protecting him. That source tells me that many of those who are guarding him were recruited by Ali al-Sistani, the senior Shiite cleric in Iraq. If Sistani says go and Maliki refuses, one of his protectors is likely to assassinate him and the U.S. government is going to get blamed and likely precipitate a full-scale sectarian civil war and attacks on Americans," North explained. This would be temporal marker of "The Shot Heard Around the World" Not sure if this will be the one but with the "change" of the "problem" because Maliki is not the next PM the disintegration of Iraq into full blown civil war and violence would be what was needed for Kurdistan to declare their independence. Maliki is obviously finished, but I'm actually thinking it's not that much of a problem that he's still there. The court doesn't support him. Sistani doesn't support him. He has no political support left, at all, since Dawa hung him out to dry yesterday. His presence, at this point, is a nuisance, for sure, but maybe not such a bad nuisance. Maliki will finally have to be removed from office when Abadi is formally seated by the Parliament, hopefully next Tuesday, and Maliki sticking around is only applying pressure to Abadi and Parliament to get their act together and get him seated ASAP.
