Probably just a campaign ploy for sympathy. Best not get too excited about this, but it looks like his party, SLC, is getting their asses handed to them today, so we should see the political landscape change a lot. Was anybody running against maliki in the election? These are local elections, but will be a good barometer for the parliamentary elections later this year. If SLC's candidates get roundly beaten, and right now, they're in third place out of three in most of their strongholds, things are going to have to change, or they'll be out of power come next year.
