Re: Iraq an economic Study
Basically the way I see it is, that if TPTB want maliki to stay, and he is doing their bidding, he will remain in power. If he can no longer be effective in/for their plans going forward, he will be removed one way or another.

Many have put forward some interesting Ideas about what those plans are for the middle east. But as we have seen things are fluid to a degree and subject to change very quickly, so to prognosticate at this point with the limited knowledge we possess, would appear to be but folly. sit back and enjoy the show, its why we are here.

I must admit that part of the fun is trying to figure out how any good mystery ends before reading the final chapter and as long as we keep that in mind, we can keep a level and head and not get to caught up in the game. lol
 Quoting: talkstory

That's all this is about, really. Just a fun way to occupy time until it's over. I've been wrong so many times, I lost count a long time ago, but it's still fun. I don't need to be right about but one thing, really. It just helps me to wrap my head around what's going on by trying to predict what will happen next.

Re: Iraq an economic Study
Also from Obama's speech:

"Now that the results of Iraq’s recent election has been certified, a new parliament should convene as soon as possible."

"The formation of a new government will be an opportunity to begin a genuine dialogue and forge a government that represents the legitimate interests of all Iraqis.

Now, it’s not the place for the United States to choose Iraq’s leaders. It is clear, though, that only leaders that can govern with an inclusive agenda are going to be able to truly bring the Iraqi people together and help them through this crisis."

"Meanwhile, the United States will not pursue military actions that support one sect inside of Iraq at the expense of another."

"And so we’ve consulted with Prime Minister Maliki. And we’ve said that to him privately. We’ve said publicly, that whether he is prime minister or any other leader aspires to lead the country, that it has to be an agenda in which Sunni, Shia and Kurd all feel that they have the opportunity to advance their interest through the political process."

He's trying to appear somewhat neutral in Iraqi elections here, probably so as not to piss off the Maliki's Shiite supporters too much, but those last three quotes, taken together, are the policy that has been discussed over the last 24 hours. Namely, that we don't support a noninclusive government, and will not go in, in any serious manner, until there is an inclusive government in place. Does anyone really think Maliki is the guy that will ever meet that standard?

WASHINGTON—The Obama administration is signaling that it wants a new government in Iraq without Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, convinced the Shiite leader is unable to reconcile with the nation's Sunni minority and stabilize a volatile political landscape.

The U.S. administration is indicating it wants Iraq's political parties to form a new government without Mr. Maliki as he tries to assemble a ruling coalition following elections this past April, U.S. officials say.

I don't see that in the transcript, but I only read the parts that seemed to deal with Maliki, because even when I read Obama, I hear Obama in my head, and I just don't enjoy that. Could you put it in context?

With Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. military advisers heading to Iraq, political support for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was dealt a serious blow Friday with a call by the spiritual leader of Iraq's Shiite majority for a new, "effective" government.

"It is necessary for the winning political blocs to start a dialogue that yields an effective government that enjoys broad national support, avoids past mistakes and opens new horizons toward a better future for all Iraqis," al-Sisanti said in a message delivered by his representative Ahmed al-Safi in the holy city of Karbala.

Fun, ain't it?

It's nice to see some of our media catching up on this, with the AP articles today, but here's how wrong most of them still are...I just heard on local conservative talk radio, during an ABC News break, "Shiite cleric al-Sistani is calling for Iraqi prime minister Maliki to be more inclusive of minorities in his government." That's not what Sistani said, at all. He said "New government." Period.
