Dog's have personalities that usually only owners can notice. You know when they are happy... pouting... bored.... hungry.... pissed off... anxious... etc.

I love my dog. She's smarter than some people I know. I have to lock the back door at night because it has a handle that she has learned how to operate... and will let herself out as she damn well pleases... lol

I like how "we" can have BIG dogs and yet, they are still puppys to us.

The slobber is only part of the deal you have to keep their ears clean or risk ear infections and after getting used to finding and cleaning slobber St. Bernard slobber from the walls, I found a glob of brownish black stuff on the ceiling.

After a few minutes, I realized it was dog-ear wax after inserting cleaning fluid, she shook her head, and the wax ended up on the ceiling.

I carry a dishtowel round and clean her lips during the summer months and I often have to wipe the puppy of St. Bernard slobber.

If you can get pest the summer slobber, season St. Bernard dogs are comical clumsy clowns as well as friendly and easygoing gentle giants. The St. Bernard is not a breed for everyone as are extremely strong and have been used as draft animals.

I used to run her on a 20-foot lead until she was about a year and a half and looked at m as if to say you run I will stay here. I was busy talking when she decided what the heck I will run, the leash tangled up around my foot, and she dragged me across the yard.

My saving grace was she turned around and saw me lying on the ground and became concerned and ran to me however, the road rash took weeks to heal.

Ditto for mine with any land-based animal except cats/dogs she's familiar with. She LOVES squirrels and whines at the door when she sees one... so I'll let her out, knowing full well she's not catching that damn squirrel... she eventually comes back, with a look of defeat... and plops down on the couch. lol

I understand the drowned in slobber syndrome and they will run around crazy if set free and hollering their name will not bring them back however lying on the ground feigning illness brings them back pronto.

Mine is quite gentle and in the winter the cats gather around and two will sleep on top of her for warmth and while most dogs leap up at most anything she stays asleep and I have placed a slice of ham or cheese across her snout and maybe received a little nose action.

My St. Bernard used to love long walks wearing a backpack however in her old age she turns into a mule if she does not want to walk. A St. Bernard has an average lifespan of 8-10 years, mine passed 10 years this November therefore I allow her to set the pace, and distance and she no longer wears a backpack.

In contrast, the Anatolian Shepherd has an average lifespan of 12-15 years in spite of the fact they are often a taller breed and all things considered when the time comes I will get another St. Bernard.

Well you need the room for larger dogs and it's just not for everyone to have a 60lb or larger animal. Smaller dogs are great too IMO...the two larger newfoundlands belong to a neighbor friend, they are just buddies with mine...they're a whole lotta dog...lol..!

Let me rephrase that. 50lbs of dog, but I'll tell you one thing both of their "businesses" are over 100lbs a week and cover the yard.

I enjoyed the larger dogs. I grew up with 5 large dogs, all over 80lbs. My wife's dog depends on her even at age 5 to be held like a baby because she did this for such a long time and pampered him like one.

My dog doesn't do that because I trained her to not be dependent 100% on being held for comfort. Wife's dog won't play fetch, mine does. Wife's dog hates going out in the rain or taking a bath, mine likes both.

My wife's dog is a male 5 yr old coco poo ... mine is a 2 year old aussie shep mix with yellow lab ...
