This house was built in what they call a "karst" area, which means that this type of landscape promotes the formation of caves and sinkholes. There is a certain type of soluble rock-limestone-that is very slowly dissolving underground (right under their house) and when enough of it dissolves, a sinkhole can form, sucking whatever is above, underground. This is just plain geological science, not some weird mystery phenomenon. When people choose to build their homes in a karst area, this is what they might have to deal with eventually, because the process is continually happening underground. Yeah-that is bad for the homeowners, but it comes with the topography..... |
