By providing an immediate response, one with that much potency you can deter just about anything.

defend themselves against whom? israel? if israel had wanted to take iran out, they would have done so a long time ago. when they had a vast superiority. why would they have waited till iran may/may not have nukes and delivery systems to take them out? you do realize that while iran hasn't directly been involved in any wars(unless you count iran/iraq), they subsidize many of the worlds most virulent terrorist regimes. it's not like they are paragons of virtue.
