My friend C.J is a 32 degree Mason (Or something along those lines), he wears a HUGE engraved gold Mason ring. I asked him the same question, he said if someone does approach you, asks you a 'secret question'(Something Mason brothers ask one another when noticed the ring), and you can't answer, it's simple... walk away. I did think the same thing though!  What's the 'secret question'? When I came across a mason with a diamond studded ring...I just said 'wow. That's a nice ring.' He said 'I'm a mason.' I gave him a friendly look. He said '(my name), I'm here to help you.' I said 'Get me outta here'. I can't remember the rest. But he DID come through for me.
