Drinking water is an interesting one. If you Google around you'll see that the Earths drinkable water supply is diminishing (We have a drought warning here again for next year). The Middle East has a lot of it and if you control the Middle East you can pipe it wherever you want.

To desalinate sea water would require a LOT of energy. For this you will still need regular oil supplies.

I agree that the technology has been around for decades for free energy but not for huge projects like desalination.
