See: [link to www.aaaai.org] There's a very good illustration there. Generally the principle of irrigating the sinuses is an old one. I've found many old doctors who have recommended it with saline as a healthy way to remove material when you have a stuffy head. The sinus pressure usually is pushing on cranial nerve five, the Trigeminal, or cranial nerve seven, the facial, and hence that pressure irritates the nerve causing pain. This is why irrigation helps. Young doctors might not know about it, or be leery because anything that they recommend, they can get sued for. |

| Anonymous Coward User ID: 1520666 12/17/2011 11:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had congested sinuses so bad 2 winters ago, that I was in tears. My head HURT badly, around the eyes, the bone was tender, around my nose, the cheek bones were tender, and there was so much pressure inside my skull, all I could do was sit and hold my head and go crazy in agony. I sat over boiling water for steam relief. Nothing really worked. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1557341 Then I got a Neti pot. I rinsed my sinuses out with warm water + the included solution packets. After a few minutes of using the Neti pot for the first time, I could hear squeaking inside my skull. The pressure was finally releasing. Then all at once, like an air valve opening, my sinuses let all that pressure out, and I felt GREAT! This report really bums me out because I have never found another solution to my sinus pressure issues from time to time. The Neti pot did the job that steam alone didn't do. I'm bummed about this big time. stop worrying and just use distilled water exactly! I'm surprised at how many supposedly "enlightened" GLP'ers are falling for this. It states CLEARLY in the instuctions people..use DISTILLED or PURIFIED water. You geniuses should be far more concerned that our friggin tap water which is supposed to be safe..has brain-eating amoebas in it!! So dont put your head under the water if you take a bath or get in a hot-tub..and you better hope when you take a shower the water doesn't get into your nose or ears! |

I use well water, salt, and baking soda in it. I have never had a problem. Sinus infections are greatly reduced and nose bleeds almost eliminated. I think that article is a reaction to some very rare and probably human caused infection. The Neti Pot was contaminated from an outside source. This is irrelevant to most of us.
