Wow, 287 is a heavily traveled highway in NJ. I'm on it all the time! Must be a traffic nightmare. Those poor people who died though :(

FAA Issues AD on Socata TBM 700 Electrical System

The FAA has issued an Airworthiness Directive for the Socata TBM 700 electrical system. It is based upon a TBM700 operator report that as a result of a crewmember handling the standby compass lighting bulb cover in flight, both essential bus bars (ESS BUS 1 and ESS BUS 2) failed, leading to loss of a number of instruments and navigation systems. Investigation showed the electrical protection of some TBM 700s is insufficient to allow in-flight handling of the standby compass lighting cover when energized.

Seems like a pretty major flaw.

MORRIS TOWNSHIP — At least five people — three adults and two children — have died after a small plane crashed on Interstate 287 outside of Morris Township, according to State Police. A dog aboard the plane also was killed.

There were no survivors, said State Police spokesman Lt. Stephen Jones.

On board the private single-engine turbo-prop, according to a press release from a New York City investment bank, Greenhill & Co., were two of its managing directors, Jeffrey F. Buckalew, 45, and Rakesh Chawla, 36, both from New York City.

The company said the aircraft “belonged to Mr. Buckalew, an experienced pilot whose passion was flying,” and that Buckalew’s wife, Corinne, and their two children, Jackson and Meriwether, were also on board.

This is a turbine powered airplane, one which is very reliable. From the initial reports, the wing was located blocks away indicating a mid-air breakup. There were known icing conditions in the area at the time, however it is premature to attempt to guess at what occurred until the FAA report is released.

Unfortunate turn of events so close to Christmas. RIP to the men, the family, and dog.

Back in the day, suiciding bankers just jumped out of skyscraper windows. But now their selfishness has reached such dizzying heights that they have to take other people with them.

Well, plane crashes do seem to be quite common among such people
