It appears to be a data transmission error that they filled in with data from a previous point in time. Here's JPG I converted from the raw unprocessed fits file (the only alteration I made was to the histogram levels for down-conversion to an 8 bit image): [ link to i319.photobucket.com] Always, always check the raw original files. Besides, the automated processing frequently does a poor job of handling the levels (note the areas that are blown-out and completely white in the OP image). You can get more detail out of the raw fits files by adjusting the levels yourself. Quoting: Astromut Your image doesn't look like the original.
