Social Network sites and their real world applications; Engineering the perfect leader?
People have been able to socialise with each other online for many years now without social sites, it doesn't make it easier to communicate, merely to find people whom you think you want to communicate with, based upon their interests. Facebook didn't rise to popularity because of anything special, simply because anyone on a college network was automatically added to the network. It was a forced and calculating move with tons of advertising in every faucet of media, the question is, why?

In May of 2006, Facebook began establishing company sites and allowed members to choose their networks. Nonetheless, college Facebook communities remain defined by those who have a school email account.

It's not just about selling people shit they don't need, they do that well without the information people provide on these sites. People accept them as nothing more than a fun and social way to interact. But what they don't realise is they are being used and it's not just for direct marketing.

The main goal of social network research is to understand what makes a leader node influence their peers and followers so that people around the world could be easily manipulated and controlled by a few select individuals. How information gets distributed in social networks and how people react to it. Easier to control a few leaders than the entire population right?

Going further they can even use the data they have about people's likes and dislikes and create a leader character that the majority of people will love based upon their likes. Of course this will only work if the answers and information people share is real and not simply made up but it is potentially one future scenario where our future "leaders" are engineered to be your best friend based upon what you and the majority of others like while hiding traits which people dislike.

There has been rapid growth in the number of US patent applications that cover new technologies related to social networking. The number of published applications has been growing at about 250% per year over the past five years. There are now over 2000 published applications.[31] Only about 100 of these applications have been issued as patents, however, largely due to the multi-year backlog in examination of business method patents.

There are many application to the information they collect, from direct marketing to engineering reality to suit the masses in the form of various media.
