Cancer, the key to immortality.
What if cancer research was not about curing cancer but to figure out how to use cancer to become immortal?

So how were scientists able to make cells immortal? The secret to producing cell immortality lay in their realizing that all cells possess a gene, known as the telomerase gene, which can add DNA back to the tip of telomeres, restoring them to their original youthful length. In almost all cells this gene is turned off early in development, rendered permanently inactive in an event that commits that cell to eventual sure death. This sad decision is a very necessary one, as it protects the adult human body from developing tumors whenever a cell's division controls are disabled. Only when this added protection against runaway growth is also lost, the switch stopping production of telomerase turned back "ON," can a cell proceed beyond a few divisions and become a cancer cell. Cancer cells are immortal because they produce telomerase.

In the human body, only two kinds of body cells are immortal, able to divide without limit. Cancer cells are one. The other kind of immortal cell is the embryonic stem cell.

"Embryonic stem cells, as their name suggests, are derived from embryos. Most embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro—in an in vitro fertilization clinic—and then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors. They are not derived from eggs fertilized in a woman's body."

There's something fascinating and yet disgusting about these immortal cells scientists have been using for decades now from the famous HeLa cells;
A HeLa cell (also Hela or hela cell) is a cell type in an immortal cell line used in scientific research. It is the oldest and most commonly used human cell line.[1] The line was derived from cervical cancer cells taken on February 8, 1951[2] from Henrietta Lacks, a patient who eventually died of her cancer on October 4, 1951. The cell line was found to be remarkably durable and prolific as illustrated by its contamination of many other cell lines used in research.

In society cancer, like nuclear radiation, is seen to be scary, frightening and something people never should discuss out of fear of getting it or something ridiculous and there isn't much out there in the way of public information as to the nature of cancer itself.

There's a lot of money going into cancer research and no one has managed "cure" it but maybe that is not the goal.

If we could get around the need for some bodily systems to work as intended this would make perfect sense

Make a cancer to infuse the blood with oxygen and remove waste is one example

one fault/characteristic of cancer is unchecked growth

otherwise sounds good op

Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), through a combination of time-lapse live imaging and mathematical modeling of a special line of human breast cells, have found evidence to suggest that for low dose levels of ionizing radiation, cancer risks may not be directly proportional to dose. This contradicts the standard model for predicting biological damage from ionizing radiation - the linear-no-threshold hypothesis or LNT - which holds that risk is directly proportional to dose at all levels of irradiation.

"Our data show that at lower doses of ionizing radiation, DNA repair mechanisms work much better than at higher doses," says Mina Bissell, a world-renowned breast cancer researcher with Berkeley Lab's Life Sciences Division. "This non-linear DNA damage response casts doubt on the general assumption that any amount of ionizing radiation is harmful and additive."

[link to medicalxpress.com]

If you take this new finding into consideration, higher doses of ionizing radiation actually help DNA repair but large doses can cause much damage and with every repair, their is a chance that something goes wrong and the process is somehow disrupted and causes cancer.

Are there people out there who are trying to use cancer to become immortal? Sounds like a bad hollywood movie.

Thanks, getting bored of the same old crap being posted here, so I thought I'd introduce something new and interesting. I only found out about the HeLa cells from a pinned post here and looked into it, there is much research going into cancer but not for the reasons people believe. Next time you donate to a cancer foundation wouldn't you like to know if that is going to research for curing cancer rather than making some rich old guy immortal?

Re: Cancer, the key to immortality.
It may be feasible to use our understanding of cancer cells to extend human life (not so sure about absolute mortality). In any case, researchers rightfully question whether this should be done. Think about it. If humans become immortal, the humans themselves become like cancer cells on the body of our planet or throughout the part of the universe we would be capable of inhabiting. In order to continue to live, humans still will require resources and will be a drain on the ecosystem in which they reside that will eventually lead to the death of that ecosystem (whether it be Earth, our solar system, galaxy, whatever). Pull back from your narcissistic view of yourself and your species for a minute and think about how the universe itself would be endangered by physical immortality of any species. Humans cannot and should not physically live forever. The consequences would be far reaching and horrible, perhaps leading the destruction of all creation.

Even though I'm a great fan of this, you are treading a very fine line. You would have to maintain the patterns established after fetal development i.e. your neural network and differentiation. If immortality was ever achieved using cancer, I'd imagine it would be like The Doctor regenerating without the sfx but over a few years stuck in a biovat rather than a few seconds.

Jellyfish...the key to immortality...

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

"Turritopsis nutricula is a small (5 millimeters (0.20 in)) species of jellyfish that uses transdifferentiation to replenish cells after sexual reproduction. This cycle can repeat indefinitely, potentially rendering it biologically immortal. It originated from the Caribbean sea, but has now spread around the world."

And there are zombies in it. Immortal Cancer Zombies. If you cut off their head, it just grows back. Sometimes it doesn't wait to be cut off... the zombies will grow multiple heads ;P

Seriously - the experimentation with cancer, radiation, and other "tweaks" to human DNA are pretty scary... this deserves a
bump

Re: Cancer, the key to immortality.
There was a thread a couple of weeks ago linking the growth of the DNA telomeres in relationship to eating. Studies showed that skipping one meal a day caused them to lengthen. Thus prolonging the life of the cell, hence the individual.
