Magnetosphere hit but no solar activity at all.

Coronal Holes: 20 Dec 11
There are no large coronal holes on the Earthside of the sun.

[link to spaceweather.com]

No flares, no CMEs or any activity on the sun that could be affecting the magnetosphere. So where did the blast of energy/matter come from?

Only plasma like the solar wind can have any affect on the magnetosphere because of the magnetic fields.

I think you are on to something. As mentioned this was noticed a couple of weeks ago. Also the same thing happened shortly after the Fukushima Nuclear plant explosions in mid-March. I think that there is a strong possibility that the source of the excitation of the magnetosphere is intra-terrestial - not extra-terrestial. The spewing radioactive particles could have made its way up into magnetosphere. If this is the case then we have a lot to worry about. We should be checking the magnetosphere simulation daily because in a way it is acting as a geiger counter measuring the earth's internal radiation.

Er, no. This has been happening for a few years now but no explanation is ever given. It was extremely obvious during the 3 years of the extreme solar minimum when the only sources of magnetosphere disturbances were from coronal holes and rare gamma ray bursts.

gamma ray bursts do not noticiably affect the magnetosphere. We have had a few small CMES off the front of the sun recently. not all of them show up on Stereo that are earth directed. There is always stuff coming off in varying degrees.

Re: Magnetosphere hit but no solar activity at all.
GRB like that which hit before the Indonesian Boxing-Day Tsunami? Probably not as intense (none have been)

[link to grb.sonoma.edu]

IIRC it was at least 6 months after the event that the media was given a hint at the size and duration of that one.

It's gravity wave hit before the tsunami, again IIRC, 2 days before.

It's a work day and no way can I spend an hour to dig up this information, which should still be available.

Just a pointer for y'all. Hope it rings somebody's bells and they can dig that info up and compare it to todays' event.

Yeah a GRB would do it. Seems pretty intense and long however.

Re: Magnetosphere hit but no solar activity at all.
From the charts and measurements, I'd say the cause of the magnetosphere hit is/was a shift in the Solar wind Alignment to be in conflict with the normal Magnetosphere alignment. Also the SW did increase in speed a little and gain some density.

Re: Magnetosphere hit but no solar activity at all.
The magnetosphere is acting up again with no major upticks in solar activity. The evidence is pointing toward a terrestial source for the stimulation of the plasma. The appearance of a plasmoid bubble in the tail of the magnetosphere ( a couple of days ago) strongly suggests that the earth itself is generating the energy to create these disturbances in the plasamsphere.
