When I was a kid my mates and I went to a place where there was once a town, Waanyarra. It was an old gold mining town and now part of the bush again, but there is still a cemetery there. We were on BMX's and doing jumps over the old graves. It was fun at first but then the three of us stopped at once ain front of a three freshly dug graves, the soil was hard and full of quartz but these graves were dug perfectly, and by hand, you could see the pick marks. We sort of laughed, the grave yard received its last body 100 years ago, why would...? We got the creeps and got the fuck out.

As kids, we used to build dirt ramps in the woods and jump them with our bikes. One time, when we were going along the trail, we saw a clown jerking off, with a joke catalog in his hand (whoopee cushion, x ray glasses, squirting flowers, etc.). Never took that path again.

My sisters daughter told me she stepped out from her moms apartment one day and was in the front yard looking at traffic when all of a sudden the street and cars began to ripple like when you drop a stone into water and your reflection ripples in rings.

Reality is not as tight as humans like to think.

A similar thing happenned to me in the early '70s. I was at soccer practice, practice ended and I went for my usual exploration of the tree and scrub covered land behind the park,I walked about 10 minutes, then i passed through a shimmering, heat haze type of thing,no concrete for it to rise from, just dirt, trees and gorse, the feeling which I now know as the fight or flight instinct came on strong, impressions of swirling lights, different shades of Blue along with some shades of Red,my chest was getting tight and heart was pounding, extreme quiet, the desire to go back to the park won and I left the area as quickly as I could. When I got to where I had entered the area there was a Mark 3 Zephyr parked up,and it was rocking,I had a quick look but didn't understand what I saw,it was a couple so involved in fucking they didn't know I was there. When I returned to the playing field after what I assumed was between 50 and 60 minutes,1 of the coaches was still there coaching a guy in goalkeeping,I asked what the time was,as I was only 11 and Mum put up with no nonsense,it turned out I'd been gone less than 10 minutes.

In 1993 me and my 3 friends saw some dude dressed from head to toe in bandages. He headed into the woods in a natural trust place called Speke Hall in the Liverpool area. We were freaked out by this guy and decided to follow him into the forest. Anyway, we lost track of him, but further along the footpath we find bandages in a bundle! My friend was heavily into martial arts and had a shitload of weapons in his house, so he suggested we go back, get the weapons, then return to the forest and beat up the "weirdo". LOL

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
After reading most of the stories here I thought I'd share mine.

This happened mid August in 2007 . My then girl-friend and I at the time, and her two small dogs, were up at my cabin in northern Minnesota . It had been cloudy and raining off and on that day .

Finally around 7 in the evening the rain stopped . We decided to go out in the back yard and get a fire going for the night . We were both crouched down putting sticks and leaves on the few embers still burning . I was on one side of the fire pit and she was on the other side, and the two dogs were playing behind me . Then all of a sudden I hear her say "what the fuck is that?" as she is looking up over my shoulder . The way she said it, and the look on her face gave me a bad feeling . Anyway I stand up turn around and see the biggest bird in my life . 12-15 foot wing-span. The dogs immediately go onto their backs . As I stood up this bird diverted it's path and flew over the cabin and out of sight .

About the bird. It came so low I could see every detail .
If I had a rock I could had hit it no problem . Maybe 25 feet up max . It was a bird of prey with talons, but no Eagle . There are dozens of Eagle nests up there and I see 20+ every time I go up there . So when people say it was a big Eagle, I say you could fit an Eagle under each wing of this thing and have room to spare. It was jet black with rust colored feathers under each wing . It only flapped its wings 3 or 4 times and was totally silent . I would have not heard or seen it if she didn't . The last thing I saw was, as it was going over the cabin it made a turn . Hard to describe this but the thing made weird movements with its wings as it turned . Best way I can put it is it looked like giant letter W then M , reminded me of some old B horror movie with bad special effects. It didn't look natural .

This sounds like a Thunderbird! They are supposedly seen from time to time in Minn. Wisconsin and Michigan's UP. I've heard several stories of them up North.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
A famous Thunderbird encounter took place in 1890, in Arizona. The story say that two cowboys saw a giant flying bird, shot and killed it with their rifles, then carried its spectacular carcass into town. A report in the April 26, 1890 Tombstone Epigraph listed the creature's wingspan as an alarming 160 feet, and noted that the bird was about 92 feet long, about 50 inches around at the middle, and had a head about eight feet long. The beast was said to have no feathers, but a smooth skin and wingflaps "composed of a thick and nearly transparent membrane... easily penetrated by a bullet." Its face resembled an alligator.
In 1963, Jack Pearl revived the tale for an article in a magazine called Saga. Among other things, he wrote that the Epigraph newspaper story had run with a photograph of the giant bird's carcass, nailed up to a wall with its mighty wingspan unfurled, and a number of men posing next to it for scale. Despite numerous people who have claimed to have seen this photograph recently, no one has ever been able to produce a copy of the picture. Ivan T. Sanderson claimed to have once owned a copy of the photo, which vanished after he loaned it to an acquaintance in the 1960s. The television program Freaky Links staged a similar photo, giving new life to the "Thunderbird Photograph" legend. The image is said to depict six western clothed adult men, standing fingertip to fingertip in front of a barn where a large bird is nailed to the wall.

In New England, lots of old abandoned farms. You find rock
walls by the ton, but also old small grave yards. Oddest
though was an old home size propane tank and foundation.
Couldn't have been that old, but had all returned to nature
except that tank and the foundation.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
This occurred about 5 years ago in wisconsin.

I was walking with my dog in a wooded quarry area. The woods were thick and there was a trail to follow as we walked on.

I was care free walking along under the tree canopy with very little sight of the blue sunny sky above. Suddenly, something huge and heavy was breaking branches up in the tree in front of my dog and I.

I could not see what it was but it did appear to be black. The top of the trees, "plural", where it must of taken off from, began to crack and sway from its movement. Big tree limbs came crashing down in front of me as I went WTF.

Whatever was up there, was big and heavy as it thrashed about at tree top level as it went to fly off.

A few weeks ago I was walking with my dog in the woods behind a country cemetery. There was a small safe. Very old, but very heavy duty. The door was ajar and I looked inside without touch it and it had a black metal cannister looking thing with wires coming out of it. I have no idea...

I LOVE this thread!! It's like an old friend, showing up every once in awhile with lots of new stories.

Here's my story. It's not scary like the others, but it made a big impression on me at the time.

It was 1970 or 71. I was a "city girl" who had married into a "good ol' boy" family. Well, it was traditional for the family to go deer hunting together. The place where they would all congregate was called "French Camp", near Yosemite in California. Anyway, when all the guys would leave before dawn the women would stay in camp, usually go back to bed to get up again around 9 or 10 am, then putt around the camp until the guys would all come back in. The women really had no interest in hunting; I think the guys just brought us along to cook for them etc.

Anyway, this was pretty BORING for me, so one morning when the rest of the women went back to bed I decided to go for a walk. There was a little trail, and I figured as long as I stayed on the trail I could just turn around and get back to camp. I'd never been out in that much Nature at one time, so I was taking my time and looking at the plants and trees and stuff. I came around a bend in the trail, and looked ahead and realized I was looking into the eyes of a fawn. He/she still had a few spots left (which is how I figured out that it was a fawn). We just stood there looking at each other - about 10 feet apart. There was massive brush alongside both sides of the trail at that point, almost like a tunnel. Suddenly there was a sort of whistle, (must have been Mama) and the fawn bolted away. Having never seen anything larger than a German Shepherd dog, seeing that fawn really made an impression on me. It was my "secret" memory, and I was happy inside when the guys got "skunked" and came back deer-less - I couldn't imagine killing such a beautiful creature.

nice story... but all creatures are beautiful. that calf to make veal, that big old cow to make beef, that sow to make pork chops. it's ALL the same.

A friend of mine and his family were deer hunting near silver lake Oregon and his uncle came out of the woods that afternoon scared to death and the only words he said were,(I seen something I should not have seen) He packed up his gear and left. He has not been in the woods since and sold all his hunting n camping gear and refuses to talk about it at all,Hmmmmm?

My father and I were elk hunting near the Umpqua wilderness area 5 yrs. ago when we were driving back from the evening hunt when we noticed some VERY UNUSUAL lights on a knowl about a half mile away and decided to find out what it was.
We could'nt find a single road or even atv track going up to the lights? We both knew and acknowleged each others thoughts and skin crawling feeling that this was something not of our understanding and decided it would not be a good idea to investigate until the following day, mind you he had a .270 and myself a 30-06 and still wanted nothing to do with what was on that hill. We hiked up to the area where the lights were the following day and found natta, zilch, zero proof that anything had been there???
Self delusion can be a grand thing!

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was visiting my good friend up in northern California in Del Norte county. He works for the park service and invited me to come with him to work for a day so as not be stuck at his place with nothing to do. He had a truck that the park service let him use and we spent the day following his supervisor and another serviceman through the backwoods at about 15-25 mph. We went this slow because 1-we weren't in any hurry and 2-we were in bear country and were trying to see if we could spot any. They were in front of us and eventually did find a small bear, but it escaped my vision and I didn't even get a glimpse. They finished their work that day (hauling cement bags and building a small wall somewhere in the forest to force water somewhere else) and we all headed back to the office. We were in front this time and after about 20 minutes my buddy who was driving pressed on the breaks and stopped suddenly. Down the bank off to the left of the road ahead of us crossed not one, not two, but three mountain lions! Two of them were decent sized and one was smaller. I figure this was a family (pride)? My buddy was real excited and told me it was rare to even spot one out there. It was something I'll never forget. They spotted us as well and just passed down the bank, across the road, and up to the right bank and disappeared VERY quickly. I was taken back at how beautiful they were and how sleek and quickly they appeared and disappeared.

I did some research to find the most isolated and roadless area of my state to backpack in. I went there alone and spent one night and it was very strange. There was no wildlife anywhere, no birds, no insects, nothing at all. It was deathly quiet. No chirping birds or crickets at night. I've never seen anything like that before and I got the fuck out of there the next morning.

Early this year I was walking on a boardwalk in the Daintree World Heritage Rainforest, up in the pointy end of Queensland Australia. I was in an area near to the coast and there were tidal creeks in the area.

It was high tide and the ocean was in, and covering large areas of the rainforest floor.

I saw a large fish, a mangrove jack, swimming over the forest floor, in the salt water. It looked crazy, to see fish swimming over the top of leaf litter, tree roots and plants on the floor of the forest.

I never dreamed that such a thing was possible.

I was told that the plant life and animal life in this part of the forest has adapted to the daily inundation of ocean water.

We where camping in the middle of nowhere, no roads, very few tracks.
Sitting around the campfire when one of the girls said " There is someone up in that tree"
I was like, sure, here we go with the scary stories.
I looked to where she was pointing, and sure enough, just visable in the glow of the fire was a leg danggling from a brach!
I called out "hey!"...whoever it was jumped down and ran off into the darkness...weird.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
bump Perhaps we could expand for people to include stories of things that didn't occur in the woods.

When I was 16, on a weekend night, I had been out with friends and returned home. I came in and saw every light in the house was on but there was no one home. Normally there would be my parents and my older brother. Didnt know what to make of it so I just went to bed. It was about midnight. At 3 a.m. I was awoken abruptly to someone banging on the door. I went out into the well lit hallway. I heard a womans voice yelling my mother's name, Mrs. White! over and over and banging on the door. I could see the door vibrate when she banged on it. I yelled loudly, who is it?? She did not answer but continued to bang and call out. I moved to about 3 feet from the door and while she was banging and calling I yelled back very loud, WHO IS IT?? This time it stopped abruptly but did not answer. I was scared. Nevertheless I leaped to the door and flung it open. There was no one there. I stuck out my head immediately and looked down the driveway, and saw no one. I ran out to the end of the driveway and looked all around. We lived in the middle of a street in a very quiet nice neighborhood. It was very quiet, no motion or noise at all. I thought whoever it was must be still there, possibly hiding in the bushes. Even if they had ran and leaped into a running car and sped away I would have at least seen them driving down the street. They couldn't get away that fast. I stood alone on the street listening and watching for about 15 minutes, waiting to see someone who was doing all that. It was so quiet and there was nothing so I went back to bed. There was still no one else home. My family wasn't the type to go out like that. All the lights and t.v. were still on. I went back to sleep. Maybe a couple hours later my dad woke me up to tell me mom was at the hospital and had had a stroke and was in very bad shape. I never told him about the strange event. It was too weird. Mom lived about 13 more years in a terrible condition from the stroke. I never knew who or what that was knocking. I still remember the sound of the woman's voice.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8640456

The part of her soul she lost in the stroke came back home trying to find her.
