Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I got a special wilderness permit to go into an area in the mountains in CA where they hadn't allowed foot traffic in, in twenty years. There were no trails. It was myself and two other Marines and we did it in exchange for seeing if there was a rare kind of trout in the streams up there. I guess the forest service didn't have anyone who wanted to do it. I'm not sure I was set up with this by a friend. Anyway we hiked for two days with no trails using just a map and compass and on the second day we walked around this huge cliff to find a full on cabin with a lawn and solar power and washer and dryer the whole nine yards all built into the rock face of the cliff. You couldn't see it from above so it had gone unoticed for years. We talked to the guy that lived there and he said we were the first people he had seen hike in, in 14 years. He was a retired helicopter pilot and he had flown all the equipment in by helo. He was squatting on federal land and knew it but didn't seem worried. He said he hikes out every two weeks for supplies by a different route then we came in and he showed it to us. We used that route to get back as he had a trail beaten down so the walking was easier. All in all it was pretty cool. The trout the forest service was looking for were in the creeks so it is still closed to foot travel and we never told the forest service about the old helicopter pilot so I would bet he is still out there.

It was a long time ago, and it was the scariest night I've had in the woods. Up in Maine on Great East Lake, at a friends cabin. We had driven ourselves to a party that night about 10 miles outside the small town, really in the sticks. It was pitch black excpet our headlights. The road to the main road was only narrow enough for 1 car, cut through the forest. We were heading there, drinking beers, when I had to piss. My bud stopped the car, I got out and went to the back of the car to pee. I was mid stream when i sensed something there. I heard a "snap" and loud thud and heard a terrible scream like a wolf but deeper. I slipped on a twig and fell, and looking up, saw a 9 foot animal approach the front of the car! It smelled like swamp and piss, and my buddy beeped the horn for a long time. The thing hit the car, growled and ran off. I got up, realize i had shit myself, and my buddy was gripping the wheel staring straight ahead mumbling..no fucking way...no fucking way...over and over...we got to the party and told no one. Never go to the woods

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
When I was 8 years old and living in Theinsville, WI, this would have been in 1964. There were some woods running along the backyards of all the houses on our side of the street, they weren't very deep but to me and my friends at that age they were wilderness. One night a friend of mine that lived at the end of the street was sleeping over, my Mom had taken the cushions off the living room couch and put them on the floor to set up an area for us to "camp out" in the living room. Of course we were having great fun in the dark talking, playing with our toy Matchbox cars etc. It was pretty late and I went towards the kitchen to get a drink of water, as I passed by the dining area that had big windows that looked out onto the backyard where we had a cement patio area I saw this "thing" that was all lit up standing on that patio. It seemed to me to be some sort of robot or machine about 8 feet tall and tall and rectangular with all sorts of lights blinking off and on all over it. I froze and just stared at it in terror for a few moments afraid to move. I remember turning around and going right back to the front of the house into the living room where my friend was and I just remember him asking what was wrong and I just said nothing but we should go to sleep cause it was late. I never mentioned what I saw to anyone until just now.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70411380

Whoa! I saw something similar.

When my husband & I lived near Yosemite I had the flu one night and couldn't get to sleep. So I got up in the middle of the night and sat at the kitchen table looking out the window. After awhile this cylindrical shaped object floated slowly down from above with flashing blue lights and white lights all over it. It wasn't huge but maybe about 10 ft. tall. I got the impression it was a craft that also functioned as a robot. I ran & woke up my husband to show him but when he got there it was gone.

I always chalked it off to me being delusional from the high fever since he couldn't see it- at least until now reading your post! Wonder if there are any reports of such a thing on any of the ufo sites?

Anyway, just catching up on all the pages I haven't read yet.

Awesome thread! More stories, please.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
Hiking west texas, middle of winter , had been off the map for 3 days, was walking through the woods not on a trail at all, the time was about 4 in the morning, i dont use a light when i walk at night i just use the moonlight or my eyes adjust enough so its easy, anyhow i ducked under a tree branch while walking then as i stood upright there was a man with no shirt on right in front of me which blew my mind, it was about 20 that night he had no shirt and only shorts i pulled my knife out and ask him if he was ok, but i never stopped walking he didnt answer and i kept moving through the woods i looked back after about a minute and he was totally gone.

very wierd encounter.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I have had many hours enjoyment reading this thread and appreciate the time it’s taken for posters to add their story and thus decided to post one of mine. Funny enough this is totally true.

In Wiltshire, England UK, not too far from Stonehenge is an ancient hill top fort. I used to go rabbit hunting in the woods and fields around this area.

Over the months, my hunting partner, a kid, and I had a number of ‘slightly strange’ experiences in that area. But we’d just put it down to illegal night time hunters’ paranoia!

Until the last night we ever went hunting there:
At night, around 2am, we’d been in this field a number of times and the first thing we did was to see where the horses were. It was nearly a full moon so without even using our high powered torches we could see the 3 or 4 horses all standing together in at the end of the field. On the far right. The back of this field had a row of bushes and shrubs, an English hedgerow, about 1000 yards long. This defined the field from the ancient hill top fort.

Confident we’d not accidentally shoot a poor horse, we looked over to the left of the field, away from the horses. It was a very bright night and even without our torches on, we could see the little white flash of fur on the rabbits butts as they hoped merrily around the edge of the field some 200 yards away.

Our mission was to hunt and kill any poor rabbit rotting to bits from myxomatosis.

We were about to stalk our way closer to the rabbits when we both froze as something caught our attention. We have spoken about this incidence since the event and this is the version we both agreed on with 100% unison.

Along the row of bushes and shrubs at the edge of the field we saw a huge ‘shadow’. It was about 250 yards away and it was huge, as least as big as an elephant (or even 2 or 3 elephants) and it was physically pushing against the shrubs and bushes like some massive wind blast.

The moonlit night was so dead calm silent and quiet and without the slightest hint of a breeze so seeing some force push back bushes and the hedgerow with such blatant force was gob smacking, to say the least. More so the accompanying total silence.

This huge shadow thing moved along the hedgerow from left to right quite slowly. Jogging pace for some 500 yards. Somehow we both felt it was ‘showing off’. Meaning we both in retrospect believe it went along the row of shrubs deliberately pushing against them, showing us how much physical energy this ‘invisible’ thing had.

The moment this shadow reached the far right corner where the horses were, all hell broke loose.

The silent night was smashed by all the horse doing mad horse screeching noises and the thunderous sound of wild spooked horses galloping around the moonlit field.

Then I saw one of the horses come galloping straight towards us. We both saw the horse was almost covered in a huge semi transparent blanket that laboured his movement. As the horse thundered up to us it was apparent that shadow thing was now the horse.

The horse stopped inches from us and we were both utterly totally frozen. The horse was totally covered in sweat, dripping in sweat like after a long race or more like it had just been dipped in oil. Thick shaving foam like stuff was pouring from his teeth baring gasping mouth. I remember the look in the horse’s eyes. It looked like the poor thing was dying, like it was burning up within. The eyes and face were all pulled back in look of utter terror, bizarrely with a look of ‘help’...

I am sad in myself that I could not handle this experience. I was just frozen in terror, like that sleep paralysis or something.

If I’d not seen that shadow thing, and the horses just freaked out and one came stampeding towards me I’d have been prepared. First I would have shone my powerful torch right in his eyes, and if that didn’t stop him I’d have given that psycho horse a right good smack on the nose with the heavy club-like torch!

But seeing the shadow move the bushes, the hedgerow, then hit the horses, seeing the one almost slow motion run to us, covered in the thick heavy mud like invisible blanked stuff was off my coping scale.

And thus I was frozen, the poor kid hunting partner was shaking behind my back, the distressed horse was clawing at the ground, and I was simply immobilized by my total and utter fear.

...

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
Nothing really supernatural or a ufo but surreal would be a better word for it,

I was in the interior of BC working near a small town. On a saturday evening a friend and I decided to take a drive to a secluded , supposedly pristine lake called Chilliwack lake and a must see beautiful spot. In any case, you drive along a paved highway then proceed deep into the heavily forested mountainous area along a dirt road. As we drove it became darker and day turned into early evening. Low and behold in the middle of nowhere we come across at least 100 cars parked on this narrow road with hardly anywhere to pass. Young people everywhere partying on this dirt road. My clearest memory of that time was some young guy, obviously drunk, whining about and pointing to his wrecked camaro which had slid about 50 feet down a very steep embankment into the forest below. Good times (Coincidentally, one of the local bars in chilliwack at the time was called good times).

By the way, when we eventually got to the lake, it was great.

Very cool story! We're in the general area, and yeah - we've heard the thunderbird stories. Supposedly some cowboys killed one more than a century ago near Tombstone and Lake Elizabeth. Locals said it had preyed on cattle for years. They said it had a wingspan of 160 feet.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
This isn't paranormal or anything, but it was weird, and it did happen in the woods.

I and a few friends were out camping, and one of the guys finished off a 40 ounce beer and threw the glass bottle in the fire. No big deal, right? Except he put the lid back on the bottle before throwing it in the fire. I saw him do this, said it was a really dumb idea, and walked away from the fire. About a minute later I hear the incredibly loud BOOOM of the bottle exploding.

I asked if everyone was ok, and my friend Steve who had thrown the bottle in the fire says "no...I'm fucked up", then falls to the ground. I run over to him to find a fairly large, triangular shaped piece of beer bottle stuck in his neck. He was conscious and everything, so I tried to distract him and told him he was fine, no problems, then I pulled the glass out of his neck, half expecting a fountain of blood to follow. Luckily it had not penetrated very deeply, so it wasn't all that bad, really. He also got hit with some shrapnel like a centimeter from one of his eyes. He ended up getting a few stitches, and that's about it.

Side note- at the hospital, they totally did not believe our story, and accused my friend of having a meth pipe blow up in his face. Good times.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
Read the thread, some people really have had weird experiences. Here are mine, two little stories.

The first happened in scrub land rather than in the woods. I drive around doing service work. Years ago I used to reach a customer using a turn off through undeveloped land. The energy felt different there, I mean the point where the air meets the ground seemed different. I don’t drive down every second road thinking that, just there. Later found out that decades earlier a UFO landed in the area. Massive coincidence, yes?

[link to www.news.com.au]

The second happened just around the corner from some woods, not so weird, I’m only envious. Was waiting at the lights when the blind flew up in the display window of an old shop. Inside an athletic guy was chasing a shapely girl around the room. He was dressed in swimming briefs tanned like a surfer. She was wearing an old fashioned nurses’ uniform looking like Florence Nightingale. They were deeply into it before realizing there was an audience. Just as abruptly the blind flew down again.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.

Had a seriously strange encounter on the Pere Marquette river in Michigan. I've been charged by a grizzly bear in Alaska, and did not feel the enduring level of fear that this encounter left me with. There are some strange things in this world. To this day I am not sure what I ran in to. I'm a very logical person, research scientist in fact, and I can make no sense of what I saw....or maybe I don't want to.

But the part that really creeps me out.

A couple years later a college football star mysteriously died in the same area, within just a couple miles. His last cell phone call indicated he thought he was being stalked, and he was found within 100 yards of a road in a clearing. No bruises, cuts, wounds. No heart attack. I followed the story closely and they eventually said he died of some pneumonia complication but that it wasn't conclusive.

I think it's possible he was literally frightened to death if he saw what I saw.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 37579514

don't leave us hanging! describe in essence what it could have been? Bigfoot-like? Demon? Shadow person? Or other?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2736339

I've never told anyone what I saw. I hinted to my (at the time) wife but she thought I was joking and I left it at that.

I was fishing along the PM on a weekday morning, probably early June. The water was a bit high and cloudy because of previous rain, but I had already taken a day off and decided to try anyways. Hadn't seen another person that morning, probably due to poor conditions. Daydreaming and I heard something across the river and about 100 feet upstream from me. See two guys making their way through the brush. Unusual because the trail is only on my side of the river at this point and the brush is thick and nasty. Odd to walk over there. Whatever.

I'm facing more or less downstream watching my fly drift. I suddenly get that feeling of being watched. I look up and am startled to see both these guys standing right across the river from me up on the bank. Now, I'm five feet out in the river (waders) and the river is no more than 25 feet wide so they're 20 feet or less from me. My instant thought was, how in the world did they move that fast in that thick stuff, and how did I not hear them.

A bit startled, I muster a "good morning gents" but they don't say a word. Just stare. I am not one to cower so I make eye contact and spit out "can I help you?". They totally ignore me but keep staring at me, now I see real malice on their faces. Then one turns to the other and says something like "we can't take him". I go on high alert. I have a CPL and carry a .380 Super under my fishing vest.

They both look at me again, and suddenly I realize this isn't two guys I'm looking at. It's something evil, yet very real. The sensation is impossible to describe. So much more than a fear of just death.

They suddenly "melt" together into one much larger being, still human in form, and almost simultaneously there's a buzzing in the air and I'm basically paralyzed. What I can only describe as a wrinkle in the air opens and they are "sucked" in. Think of heat waves on blacktop. Some sort of distortion.

I knew that only my faith saved me that day, I think they were hunting quite literally for souls.

I don't care if you believe me, go hike along Sanborn creek, or the Baldwin river, or the PM on some quiet day. By yourself. Don't bother taking a gun, you'll be too scared to use it if you're unlucky enough to see what I did.
