Miles away from any road and hundreds of miles away from a city...came face to face with a bear. it took off.

Came across owls right above me as I rested against a tree. They clucked at me...this is in Candada.(lol)

Came across moose, deer, elk, wolves, badgers, coyotes, wolverine...once...dived at by Bald eagles protecting nests...that was fun...

Slept in the woods many times. Never bothered by anyone or anything. been hundreds of miles away from any sort of city...

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
Speaking of bears. I never saw one up close but I do have a scary bear/woods story from back when I was like 21.

I was in the Pocono mountains in PA camping with my GF at the time and her family. We snuck off into the woods to get a little private time on a blanket.

We left the spot and went back to the car to leave and she realized she had forgotten something back in the woods. I went back to get it and ended up getting lost in the woods.

I was walking and walking and walking for hours and finally I see a clearing up ahead in the woods that I was sure was a property or road or something. As I got to the area I noticed it was not human property, but BEAR property. The bears had knocked down all the smaller trees in the area and you could see all the claw marks in the trees. I started to move away from the area but man was I scared I would take ten steps and stop and listen. This went on until I was far away from the clearing.

I walked and walked and walked and finally came out to a road almost 12 miles from the campsite. I had to walk all the way back too and did not make it back to the campsite until after dark. I screwed up everyone's day because we were supposed to leave around 11am but did not get out until after 9pm.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
And yet another creepy woods story. I do a lot of fishing so I spend a good deal of time in or near woods.

I was fishing on Fry's Run Creek in Coffeetown PA, far up the creek deep into the woods. I was fishing for trout but kept catching these stupid eels which would not leave my bait alone. These are native browns in this creek and they are very smart and hard to catch.

Well after catching like 10 eels I start chucking them behind me on land so the stupid things would stop biting on my line.

Well, nightime creeps up on me and I break out my flashlight to pack up and leave. I hear this noise in the woods behind me and turn and shine my flashlight on the woods.

BAM... sets of green eyes EVERYWHERE. It was like a scene out of scooby do. They were up in the trees on the ground, sitting on rocks. There must have been 25 Raccoons just waiting for me to leave so they could get their hands on those eels.

Until my mind put two and two together that they were just coons there was a hell of a rush before that seeing all those eyes.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I have been exploring the Northern Coastal mountains for a few years now. I was introduced to a little town called Covelo by a friend who lived there. We were in the same ghost hunting group together so she suggested we go there because the town and surrounding valley and mountains were very haunted. The history there is very dark. Over 20,000 Northern California Indians violently died there in the 1850's and 60's.
Here are a few things we have experienced.
I saw dark shadows about 4 ft tall running very fast through a field. I saw the same black and white dog on 2 different occasions in 2 different places about 20 apart. The first time was in the same field I saw the shadows. I could tell it was not friendly. The second time I saw it was at my campsite on the north mountain known as the Yuki Wilderness I was driving to my campsite when I saw the dog. He was running very fast with his tail down and between his legs and crouching like a coyote or a wolf. He was running strait for a 50 foot drop into the river. When I got out of the car, the dog was gone. There was no trace of it.
Me and my friend went to a little creek and decided to do some evp's and when we asked it someone wanted to talk to us, hundreds of frogs started croaking. We asked them to stop if they were trying to speak to us and then it was silent. We asked them to do it again, and the croaking started again. It went on for a half hour. I was talking with a local Indian on the Rez who was at my campsite and asking her if it would be possible for the Indians to get along and work together to survive in the event of a catastrophic event and she said that if they had to, they probably would, even though it would be hard. Just then, I looked down and there was an arrowhead at my feet. I had scoured the area for them all day. I couldn't have missed it. I also saw another huge brown dog darting up a ridge along Cottonwood Creek.
I was looking for arrowheads along the river and saw feet and legs in front of me so I looked up and the image was gone.
Indian hauntings are the trippiest, hands down!

I was about to go into a state forest in New South Wales.. There was a creepy wooden sign hanging on a rusty chain with the words "BELANGLO STATE FOREST"

It was walking around until it hit me..This was the place where Ivan Milat and his brothers killed and raped all those backbackers !!!

I felt the blood drain from my face and a chill up the spine and ran for my life.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
It will take a while for me to pick my 44 years of memories to come up with a good one. One of the closest things we had to "woods" near our home when I was a child, tho, was the huge, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. You could get lost in there. Now and then you'd come across some signs of animal sacrifice, which was kind of creepy. San Francisco was the mecca for Satanism and I remember my parents always pointing out certain places where supposed Satanists covens resided. We were a church-going family, so that kind of thing got everyone's attention, I suppose.

When I was a bit older, we moved to Santa Clara. I used to feel safe wandering through town on my own, although I don't think that was always the case. Walking to school there was a shortcut through a wooded park that included a creek, where we liked to go play on the rope swing a lot. It was pretty secluded, and if you went down into the dry creek area, it was about 20 feet deep, so there was a limited number of spots where you could climb back up to the top and walk along the edge. One day I was really glad I was walking up top, rather than down below, because I looked down and saw a slightly chubby light haired man quickly undressing in a depression in the wall of the creek bed, most likely hoping to surprise other middle-school kids were walking toward him on their way toward school. Was so glad to miss out on that awkward flasher moment (although there were others to come). I went and reported it to the office and they had me make a police report. Needless to say, I didn't walk that way again. Weirdos abound, no matter where you roam, it seems.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
A friend and I were walking a trail just above a river and decided to go lower down to walk along river edge. I don't know why we picked that particular place to drop down to the river because it was one of the thickest with trees and brush but that's where we chose. Across from that spot, on the far bank, are some waterfalls and we could hear them from the high trail.

Next to the river, and hidden from trail above, was a large, natural, flat rock alter maybe 20 ft square. There were large rocks on it forming pentagon, melted white candles all over and blood. There was quite a bit of blood in natural pockets of the rock alter.

When I got home I called the S.O. and they told me that they didn't investigate "devil worshiping" even with the presence of blood! I knew several deputies so called one of them at home who told me that one of our judges was allegedly the head of the devil worshiping ring and it was he who got the sheriff to stop investigating such things.

It pissed me off so my friend and I went back and threw all the pentagram rocks in the river and wrote messages to the assholes on the natural alter.

Have no idea if the blood was human or animal. The day we were walking was at end of March. Apparently March 21st is a big ritual night.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I have a few stories, as i have led an active outdoor life.

First story,

In florida where im from i used to go over to my cousin's house on the weekends. He had alot of woods behind his house, and about a 1/4 mile out there was these 3 ponds. At 1 end of it,it was really deep and had this grey clay all around it.On the opposite side it was only about 3 ft or so.We used to go there all the time, trying to see who could dive down and touch the bottom of the deep end."Who ever could bring up a handful of sand/clay would win".So we did this for over the course of a month every weekend. It was me,my brother, and my 2 cousins.
So 1 day we were there swimming as we always did.So we were like f it lets go play on the shallow end of the pool,"after we were in the hole for about 30 mins fing around".So were swimming and we make it to the other side and we turn around to look across the pond.To our suprise we started seeing these bubbles coming up out of the hole we were just in.Then all the sudden a gator surfaced a full grown 12ft or so gator.Scared the shit out of us because we had been fing arounD that area for weeks...lmao lets just say we stayed away from that area.

2ND STORY

My dad and i were camping out in colorado up in the mountains. We had been doing this for years. One time we brought my brother and an old friend of my dads along with us.The whole month they were like we have'nt seen much wildlife, other than a few deer, elk,so on.We told them that we see bear and all kinds of animals all the time.So the trip was coming to an end for my brother and my dads friend,as they were heading back home and we were staying another week.

The last morning in camp it was around dawn.Just enough light to kindda see.My dad's tent was across the firepit but infront of my tent facing me.As in a cricle type setup.I was still asleep when i heard my dad say quit hitting my tent and go back to sleep.I let it go thinking he was talking in his sleep or who knows what. Then about 10 mins later he says it again but this time it's like he was getting pissed, thinking i was fing with him i guess.

So i yell out what the heck are you talking about im way over here in my own tent.He says what are you doing hitting my tent with a stick or something?I i said no and was like wtf is he talking about. So i poke my head out the tent and there stood a brown bear swiping at my dad's tent.I yell over to him it's not me im telling you,it's a bear.He says yeah ok whatever now quit fing with me and go to sleep.

I start laughing and said im not making it up look out of your tent.He unzips his tent and was face to face with this bear inches away.I said see i told ya.He says get your gun,so i pull out my 44 mag i carried everywhere. But i said throw that cast iron pan at it.I pull out my cam and start taking pics.My dad starts yelling at it and getting up with the pan to scare it away.

So it runs up to our shower teepee we made, goes inside grabs a bar of soap and eats it.Then it walked over to our jeep stood up and started rocking our jeep with it's paws as it was huffing and puffing. Then it gets down and goes to our cooler, opens it up,pulls out a bottle of ketchup and eats the whole thing plastic and all.

Then it ends up running away, looking back on it i remember the nite b4 we kept hearing a huffing sound and to big eyes in the dark from the reflection of the fire.so it was out there all nite while we were sleeping lmao.

there was a stream in fla i used to go to as a kid with the family to swim.we loved going to this place because we would find sharks teeth in the stream bed.there would be shallow parts you could just sit in and dig in the mud.it had waterfall type places, not really big but a couple feet drops here and there.seemed to be alot of limestone or something around too.these looked to be very old.hugh teeth too not just small ones.the stream was in the woods and about 50 to 70 miles from the east coast.fun times those days were....

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was working near the White Mountain Apache Indian Res about 10 years ago. I'd worked hard all week and thought I would just take a night off and chill out.

I drove for miles down a dirt road and far away from the nearest city. At About 10 at night I pulled to the edge of a rut in the road just to kick back. I climbed out of the cab of my truck, lit a smoke and started walking around. I could hear birds and little animals scurrying about. The desert seemed to come alive that night.

I ended up laying on the hood of my truck sucking down a beer and taking in the beautiful stars. Coming from Southern California, I was amazed at the massive and wonderful Milky Way Galaxy. It was great to behold.

I was nearing the end of my first beer and wanting to roll off the cab and grab another one so I propped myself up on one elbow. Then I heard them. The sound of unshod ponies striking rocks as they walked.

At this point I stood up on the hood to see where the noise was coming from. I still couldn't see anything but knew they were coming from my right. I could feel my heart beat rapidly when the first one broke bush.

He was the most proud person I ever saw. His entire body and horse all had a weird glow about them. He wore a full head dress with feathers that touched the horses rump. The ends of the feathers were lit with a reddish glow.

Being scared to death, I didn't know what to do. I froze. I waited as he rode near the front of my truck. Once there, he stopped and stared directly in my eyes. He had deep lines that crisscrossed his face. I could tell that this man was important and held power. He was extremely strong looking, well built for his age and his face shown the worry of many years trying to keep his people alive.

With a slight kick to his horses flank, he pushed on. Six other warriors followed him. Each dressed differently but all glowing as the first. None of them looked at me. They just rode by.

When I could no longer see them or hear them I jumped off the truck and grabbed a .45 and a flashlight. I was still pretty shook up. I flashed the light across the path they'd taken but could find no tracks. Yet I know I heard the hooves striking stones and the horses breaking against the bush.

I ran to the clearing to see if the edges might have broken or twisted branches. Everything looked normal as far as I could tell. Then I heard the sounds.

It was as if they were coming back but now there were dozens of them. My legs became feeble as I chamber a round in the .45. Soon I could not only hear them 50 yards abreast of me but I began to see their faint glows.

I have to admit, I lost it at this point. I ran back to my truck to get away but realized the doors were locked and keys inside. I must have bumped the auto lock when I grabbed my gun and flashlight! I thought about shooting out the window or breaking it with a rock but that might incite them in some way. I was scared.

With my brain in panic mode I ran off the road, deeper and deeper into the brush. I ran until I could run no more than I walked and ran some more. Finally, not seeing or hearing them anymore, I stopped and looked for shelter.

It was cold that night and I had little in the way of supplies with me. All I could think of doing was staying hidden and keeping warm. I didn't dare use my flashlight for fear of being seen. So I reached down and scooped pine needles all around my body.

I must have fell asleep during the night because when I awoke the sky was black with dark clouds and it began to rain heavily. Once again, I felt my life was in danger and knew I had to do something. I used the flashlight to find better cover but even under big trees, little streams of water would fall. After about 10 minutes I found a very small cave. Not a big one like you see on tv. I ran up there to check it out and found it to be suitable enough to completely shield my body with extra room to spare.

By this time, I was soaked! Everything I wore including my underware was wet. I decided to make a fire at the mouth of the cave for warmth and to dry my clothes. So, I gathered fallen wood from under the trees and pine needles. I tried to light the pine needles but they wouldn't catch. Finally, I pulled off one of my socks, found a dry patch near the top and used it to start a fire with my lighter. The fire felt good but smoke filled my small cave. I ended up grabbing a small log and used it to push the fire away from the entrance. It worked and now the cave was clearing but the fire was going out because of the rain. Naked, I left the cave site to look for long branches. I found a handful of large ones and placed them tepee style around the fire. Now, as the rain hit these green sticks, the water clung to the sticks and was displaced around the fire. I dug a small ditch around my tepee waterbreak and watched as the water pooled around it and spilled over in safe direction.

I was very scared that night and couldn't sleep for many hours. When I awoke, I was freezing. My fire was completely out but my clothing was nearly dry. My plan that day was to retraced my footprints, get back to my truck, break the damn window, get the hell out of there and never come back.

I didn't take long for me to realize the rain had washed away my tracks. I had run for hours the previous night and had no clue as to where I was. I could see no landmarks in any direction. I walked around for a while looking for the biggest nearby hill. Once on top, perhaps I could spot something and find a way out.

As I neared the crest of the hill, my heart sank. I couldn't see anything I recognized from my vantage point. As I sat down, trying to collect my self, I saw strange indian symbols hanging in the tree near me or stuck in the ground. There were no footprints in this area as well but I knew it had been done recently. Sticks were used to make the symbols and they were twisted and broken. The wood inside was completely green. I know I had walked into some sort of religious site and I'd better get the hell out.

I backtracked to the best of my knowledge the way I'd come the night before. I fell twice and hurt my right leg in the process. I had to stop for a break. I sat there thinking how crazy the night had been. and tried to rationalize the experience. Finally I just got up and kept walking in a westernly direction. I came to a small pool of water in some rocks and wanted a drink but the water looked filthy and animal and bird dropping were all around the water. I just lay my head on the rock and almost cried. Alright, I cried a little.

After a time, I got up and pushed onward. I saw a fairly large clearing ahead and made haste. When I reached the clearing I froze in my tracks. A wooden indian spear with the blunt end pushed in the ground stood before me. A single white feather with a painted red tip hung loosly near the top. A large rabbit was impaled on the tip. Its guts on the ground and its blood still slowly dripping like small rivers down the length of the spear.

I'll have to finish my story tomorrow. It's getting way late and I have to work tomorrow.

 Quoting: Red Harvest

that remids me of the half rabbit story I'd almost forgot about, How scared is that? I was up early one camping by the river morning, high above camp where I could poop in peace, and as I'm contemplating the day, I look to my right at the stump I'm leaning against, and there is half of the rabbit that had been running back and forth through the camp the night before, it was right next to the fire each time too, like a half dozen or more times, till we went to sleep. Now however was what was left of it, but there was NO blood, or anything, just a perfectly halved wild rabbit, with the fur attached and nothing else out of the ordinary, but no sign of the other half either, so how it had gotten up there? I'm thanking my lucky stars whatever it was didn't get us, cause we're easy prey too, and I went down and got a knife, and came back up and cut off the lucky rabbits feet, and left the rest there for whatever had gotten it in the first place, amd I've ketp those feet for many years and just recently thrown them out as they'd begun to get a little bug eaten, and just a few months after that my husband who's born in the year of the rabbit left because he REALLY likes beer, not sex. So the lesson is, NO more rabbits .. too sensitive and they do REALLY dumb bunny things, like get halved, even when they ask for help. DUMB bunnies ..

It's getting way late and I have to work tomorrow.

ah no, that's the ONLY time my truck will autolock, is if I'm stupid enough to leave the keys in the ignition, and shut the door, WITHOUT the window down to get them back again out of the truck, AFTER the doors lock when I shut the door. I thought it's just an old cop car, the mechanics are now WELL aware of this issue, so no BS on that one, sry shorty(shortsighted)
but HOW anticlamtic ... poor form.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
When I was a year or two out of high school, my friend and I were out coon-hunting in the middle of the night.

We had been walking for quite some through the woods and we were way out in the boondocks. We decided it was time to stop and smoke a bowl when we heard the unmistakable sound of a horse neigh.

We looked at each other and I was like, "did you just hear that horse?" He was like, "Yeah."

No big deal. Just a horse. Well, we looked EVERYWHERE for that dang horse and could not find it.

It didn't freak us out until we realized there was no horse. And that's just it, there was no horse.

Huge turd in the middle of the path, filled with FUR .
Southern appalachia, no predators that large here. Bigger than human or huge dog turd.

Rumors of mountain lions, denied by the authorities.
Can't imagine what it could have been otherwise.

HUGE TURD, formed, human shape, filled with fur.
500 feet from the house, deep woods, does bigfoot eat furry critters?

sounds like owls, they regurgitate their prey, fur bones, beaks, and claws, can be massive, depending on the prey size. and it's usually pretty dry, next time poke um' with a stick, and you'll see it's just all the extras. . ;)

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I got a special wilderness permit to go into an area in the mountains in CA where they hadn't allowed foot traffic in, in twenty years. There were no trails. It was myself and two other Marines and we did it in exchange for seeing if there was a rare kind of trout in the streams up there. I guess the forest service didn't have anyone who wanted to do it. I'm not sure I was set up with this by a friend. Anyway we hiked for two days with no trails using just a map and compass and on the second day we walked around this huge cliff to find a full on cabin with a lawn and solar power and washer and dryer the whole nine yards all built into the rock face of the cliff. You couldn't see it from above so it had gone unoticed for years. We talked to the guy that lived there and he said we were the first people he had seen hike in, in 14 years. He was a retired helicopter pilot and he had flown all the equipment in by helo. He was squatting on federal land and knew it but didn't seem worried. He said he hikes out every two weeks for supplies by a different route then we came in and he showed it to us. We used that route to get back as he had a trail beaten down so the walking was easier. All in all it was pretty cool. The trout the forest service was looking for were in the creeks so it is still closed to foot travel and we never told the forest service about the old helicopter pilot so I would bet he is still out there.

That's a great story. I don't have one as good. I did happen on a small cabin once. It was pretty cool, and with solar in a remote area, but no one around. I didn't hang around. At first I thought it was hunter's place, but too good a setup with improvements. Somebody was getting ready for a bad time, my guess a bug out place.

There's lots of weekend hunters' cabins in remote places. Some of them are obviously on old settler areas. I walked back way off the trails and in some isolated area I found daffodils. Those are not a native species. I figure someone brought them in a while back. Not long ago, maybe back in Civil War times. There were Germans who came just before the war, maybe they brought along bulbs to remind them of home. They road the flatboats down the rivers. Maybe they set up for awhile then moved on Westward. The patch was still very small, but not near anything recent as daffodils will spread.

On several occasions I've run into rattlers sunning. I knew some people who skinned them, and saved the rattlers after eating the meat. You never forget that sound. I can hear it plain as day. It's an interesting area as there's a lot of amethyst there. Geodes too.

As a child I had a strange experience. It's one of those memories that you don't know is a dream or not. I recall walking along a forested area, then ducking in along a deer run. As I walk the run peters out and I'm in a dense forest. I walk for hours and hours, then pop out a few miles from a wooded park. It's a strange memory because I've looked for that spot, on maps and on foot and I feel kinda sheepish, and though twice about tellin' the story because you'll doubt it's veracity, but I feel like I was there, but it's just not possible. It's almost like, of I feel foolish, a mystical place. It was so real, too real to be a dream. The place was incredibly beautiful. It happened so long ago, but I close my eyes and see it....a very strange experience.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
Reading back through here's the weird detail I left out. That deer run area and the forest and the park. Well the forest doesn't exist on any map. I never could find it. The original area is no where near the park. They don't connect in any way. It shouldn't be possible to get from one to the other.

I considered that I might have been lost and walked in circles. It's just not possible to get from that area to the other, not without running into houses and landmarks. It's very strange, and I feel certain I was there, but it's impossible.

I've written a lot, many hundred of pages of journaling, but I just have a hard time writing about it. It's impossible to explain just how unearthly it felt.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
In 7th grade I lived in Mobile Alabama - this town had a very creepy Deliverance kinda vibe.

There was a concrete ditch near our house that we used to skateboard in, it was about 7-8 feet below ground level. The very first day we went there we discovered a dismembered animal lying in pieces in the ditch, with no skin.

Many weeks or months after moving to Mobile, a friend named Sam and I decided to skate along the ditch (away from the neighborhood and into the woods) to see where it would lead us. We followed it for a mile or so into the woods. It eventually ended at a vertical wall of earth and concrete, with two holes continuing forward. The holes were about 5-6 feet in diameter and each had horizontal metal bars stretching across their length right in the middle.

We stood there trying to decide whether to continue, when suddenly we heard a voice coming from the right tunnel. It said for us to "come inside". My friend and I were terrified and totally frozen stiff. Then other voices joined in, it seemed they knew we were terrified and they were laughing, adult's voices and also children's voices. Then an instrument started playing, it sounded like an oboe or a reed instrument.

Here's where it gets weird. We were standing there, not moving or saying a word, and the next thing we saw were several pairs of GLOWING EYES in the tunnel. They were yellowish white, and bobbing up and down as though walking.

There is a minor gap in my memory at this point, but basically what emerged from the tunnels was a suburban family of 5, all on bicycles. The minor gap is that I don't actually remember them getting their bicycles over the metal bars that blocked the tunnel, and it seems like I would've remembered this because it would've been a difficult thing to do.

They were all blond-haired and blue eyed, they looked like a suburb family right out of a catalog. There was a man and woman in their mid-30s with 3 children, the oldest being about 12 and the youngest being about 5 or 6. I remember looking at the youngest child and seeing circles under her eyes, I thought to myself "That girl looks like she's on drugs".

The man held out a small object which I took to be the instrument he was playing. He said, "The next time you hear this, you'll know it is us." Then they got on their bicycles and rode away.

I know that I would've eventually written off this story as my imagination, but the only reason I know for sure that it happened exactly as I'm telling, with the glowing eyes and everything, is because there was someone else with me and we confirmed everything with each other afterwards.

An aryan suburb family of 5 with glowing eyes in a pitch black sewer tunnel in the middle of the woods... what had we stumbled across and what were they doing there? I've always wondered.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I remember back in the late 80s, I stayed with a girlfriend who managed a apartment complex in Laurel Md. The complex had wood lines around it.

I took a stroll one day and smelled something dead. I work in research and I had smelled a lot of dead animals. Some that were dead for days like sheep in a field. Very nasty smells they were.

However, this didn't smell like the others. I assumed that a body would smell this way. So I noticed that the smell was coming from the edge of a woods.

I walked in carefully trying to follow the smell. I got about 20 feet in where the odor was the strongest. I am looking around and not moving from the spot.

A maggot fell on my shoulder and I brushed it off. I looked up and I was standing under a body of a man in military jacket and pants that hung himself.

He was there for a while because maggots had eaten his face away. It was mostly bones and maggots. So I called the police and they came by and roped off the scene.

There were medical examiners and the whole works of CSI there. The funny thing was that when they cut the rope the body hit the ground hard. There was a plume of stench and maggots and people started upchucking left and right. The Noobs! ROFL!

Apparently this guy went missing for I believe 2 months and he was suicidal. What a way to find a body!

A Man Has Got to Know His Limitations

I am just a sinner trying to make it to heaven!

Romans 8:35-39
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
My strangest experience wasn't a woods kind of thing. We lived in a rural KS area in a country neighborhood of about two dozen homes laid out on a big gravel circle cut into a section, each home with several acres - some with ponds. I swear we had a ghost (an old Mexican man) but he never bothered us and seemed to like us so that wasn't an issue (perhaps he was our protector). Whatever the cause, I believe the neighborhood was somehow cursed - or very unlucky. We lived there 8 years. During this time, one neighbor was hit by a train and another rear-ended a garbage truck - both dead. The UPS man overturned his truck on the gravel - dead. A neighbor boy got strangled in a weight machine - dead. A neighbor girl got drunk and flipped her three-wheeler - dead. A neighbor friend of mine flipped her Suburban on the gravel 1/2 mile away and died. A neighbor boy flipped his truck on the gravel and a passenger was killed. A neighbor man blew his brains out. I was so glad to get out of that place.

We were all around the fire around seven of us on a clear night. I alone looked up at just the right time to see an ENORMOUS shrouded, winged creature fly over us, silently. It was right over the tree-line and because of the fire I could tell that it was no beastly owl or anything. Besides I've never seen a bird this big in all my life in these parts. This was a creature. None of the others saw it, and I kept my silence, though kept looking up hoping it would take another pass.
