Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was on duty as a firefighter one night in Southern IL. In our area are old abandoned Black Powder Magazines. Earthen burms really, with a steel door and the front is made of railroad ties...and they have concrete floors. Probably 18' by 20 feet, and they actually did store Nitro and black powder in them years ago, but no more. They're always in the woods in case they inadvertently blew from heat or lightening, for example.

So I was checking this building one night around 2 to 3 in the morning. I fell into a very shallow sleep. While in this shallow sleep, I kept getting the feeling that I should walk in the woods to this powder magazine.."go to the powder magazine." "go to the powder magazine."

But it was dark and the grass was tall. I walked over to the gate to go through to the woods and had the keys in my hands to unlock the padlock. Then, I decided it was too dark and the grass too tall and I'd get chiggers...so I dropped the lock and walked on...knowing I should have checked the powder magazine in the woods. Why I didn't know.

The next day, when I woke up and turned on the TV in the afternoon after sleeping till about 1p (from working 12 hrs, midnights), the news was showing a helicopter flying over the woods and powder magazine. It was surrounded by police and medical people.

There were two kidnapped victims, sex slaves, being held in that magazine (for days) by a truck driver who had abducted them in another state and was keeping them captive in the powder magazine. They were both in pretty bad shape and would not have lasted much longer.

I should have gone into the woods and checked that magazine.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
One time me and a friend were at a lake deep, deep in a forest in WV night fishing for catfish. We used the headlights from my friend's SUV to see. I kept tellling him we should go before he kills his battery. Sure enough the battery died and we didn't even have flashlights.

We didn't have cell phone service either and it was too dark to walk miles home, let alone walk at all because it was so dark.

I tried to start a fire in the pitch dark with my lighter. I couldn't even see my hand infront of my face hardly.

The hood on my friend's SUV was still up from tankering around under the hood with the battery lol. The hood was held up with hydrolics I guess they are? Anyways the hood does not come down unless you put it down and even with trying, it doesn't slam easily: it goes down slow bc of the resistance in the hydrolics.

Anyways infront of the SUV I'm trying to start a fire with no luck when all of a sudden the hood SLAMS down loudly! My friend who is crouched down across the fireplaces (w/no flames)from me must of been as scared as I was bc for the first time I could see the whites of his eys.

We sit in shock and absolute fear for about 5 seconds when a "Shhhhhhhh"- like static sound starts to sound from beside the SUV and slowly moves towards the lake and then we can hear it go across the lake away from us until we do not hear it anymore. It sounded like it was about 6 to 7 feet off the ground.

We camped in the SUV for the night and about froze to death, and the next morning the SUV magicaly started right up lol.

To this day I have no idea what slammed the hood and made that static noice!

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I was walking around some farmland in San Marcos Texas out in the middle of noplace and came upon a few tin shed structures. They were not very big, maybe 10' x 8'.

I started looking inside them and there were a bunch of old bottles and various things from like the 1950s/60s era.

I opened up one shed and it was empty but here is where it gets weird.

When I opened the shed and stuck my head inside I thought I heard rain hitting the tin shed. I closed the door, looked up, overcast day but not a drop of rain in sight.

I opened the door again, stuck my head in, and heard the rain again. I was like WTF is going on.

I walked inside of the shed and that's when the light hit them at the right angle for me to see what was making that noise.

The entire inside walls and ceiling of the shed were covered 3 inches deep in daddy long leggers. They all seemed to be interlocked with their legs. There must have been 50,000 of them. They were all tapping their right longest front leg on the tin of the shed in unison. It was one of the weirdest things I ever saw. They also seemed to put off a weird smell in large numbers like that.

I always wondered about this. Has anyone else ever seen such a thing?

That reminds me of working in the Mojave desert on a movie in the 80's. We had a day off and a couple of us went out exploring in the desert in my friends truck. We were way out in the desert, 4 wheel drive territory, and we found a Camero. From behind it a couple of old toothless guys stood up. We walked over to them. They were miners. They took us down into their mine and we had to use flashlights. I shined mine on the ceiling and it was completely covered in HUGE furry spiders. As were the walls. Tens of thousands of them. One of the old guys said "those are the sisters, they get jumpy when we start blasting". Oh, OK cool, ummm c'ya. End of tour.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
A Viet Nam vet collecting twigs. Wayyy back in the foothills in Cal. It was important to him to get all of them the same size and shape.

He started talking about killing people and stuff. I wasn't scared, just left him some smokes and went back on my way. I lived with a vet and his wife at the time. Been surrounded by them all my life, so I'm not making fun.

I was thinking that maybe the guy that there was a thread about this weekend, who was breaking into people cabins and stealing their food and booze, might be a vet too. Sometimes they have a hard time blending back in to society and end up in jungles and the woods where they feel safe.
 Quoting: Captain Spaulding 10648098

Actually I was in California when someone sent me to the river to tell a Vietnam vet that was living down there that they had some work for him to do.

I followed the directions, and while it was not out in the woods, it was secluded. I found him there with some other homeless guys. He would have normally walked to the place, and that was all I was there to tell him to do. But he walked with a cane, so I offered him a ride.

It wasn't that far once we walked back up to the car, but I felt since I was going to the place anyway...

So on the way there we chatted a bit. Then he asked me why I wasn't afraid of him. I asked him why would I be?

I actually spent some time with him on occasions that he worked odd jobs around the place I worked. He was a very nice guy, but I do know he spent most of the year in the woods, and usually only came out to get his check (back then) from social security and or VA every month.
 Quoting: Storm*

I don't think this guy was anything to worry about. I think he was testing me, almost like the guy you met. It's better these people just live a life like they do rather than get in trouble trying to assimilate back into a culture they're not comfortable with, after whatever unmentionable trauma they either witnessed or experienced. (my Nam vet roommate was one of the coolest guys, and one of the most influential people in my life, and after he got enough beers in him he fell into a pretty *strange frame of mind* because of what he went through)

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
In Alaska where salamanders do not exist and I've never heard of rumors of a sighting of one I saw one plain as day sitting in the sunlight on an alder leaf near a creek. It was not a transistional region where one could possibly walk there in the summer. It was thousands of miles from the nearest salamander friendly habitat.

What makes it weird is on Hawaii where they also don't exist I saw a salamander as well but that species I have never seen in any salamander or newt encyclopedia anywheres. And I am familiar with lizards and skinks and can tell the difference easily. If I had just seen it dash through the bushes maybe I could brush it off as a loose skink but I found it in a meadow. I put my hand near it and it crawled on it's own into my hand. It was clearly a salamander not a lizard. It was moist and froglike and it's front half was yellow and its back half was black with a sudden demarcation between colors not a merge. It was very weird that it saw me and walked into my hand not fleeing like the Alaskan salamander did or a lizard normally does. It was just a baby so I carried it out of the flood zone to safe territory and released it.

The only 2 states they don't exist I've seen them in both and I've never heard of anyone else seeing them ever. I still wonder about that. I wasn't imagining it either. The Hawaiian one I showed my sister and I let her hold it for a second even. So there is a witness. The Alaskan one disappeared before the people on the trail behind me got close.

I was stationed at Fort Gordon GA. for AIT in the army. My school was 6 months long so I was permitted to have a car. If anyone has ever had the chance to drive around that place, you know how huge it is. 56,000 acres I believe. I went out for a cruise one night out towards the old airstrip. It was dark out, probably 10PM or so and there is no light of any kind out there. Well, my fucking headlights started to dim and kind of flicker. Had to slow way the hell down because I couldn't see. Seemed like the slower I went the dimmer the lights got. I pretty much came to a stop when I started seeing what looked like red phosphorus tracer rounds shooting across the road in front of me. I'm pretty sure no one was out there shooting as I didn't hear anything. I have no idea what they were and I wasn't going to get any closer to see. I turned the fuck around and got out of there.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I grew up in rural Oregon, and had a freaky experience while driving on the country roads. I was about 16 at the time and had just gotten my license a few weeks earlier and a beater old dump pile. We'd been hanging out at my friends place and were returning to another buddies house. We were way out on the gravel road that leads back to his place, which goes for about a mile off the "main" road. I was driving along the curvy road that had been leveled out from a fairly steep hill, and I saw a dark shape moving through the ferns on the hill side. I slowed down and turned the lights off, thinking it was a deer (they don't just sit there like the phrase if you do... or rush you), but I quickly realized it wasn't any 4 legged creature, as a dark human shape leaped down into the moonlight running through the trees onto the road. I hit the headlights and we all flipped out! It was this crazy looking Rob Zombie lookalike, staring right at us, with long unkempt hair and.. A MACHETE! I slammed the car in reverse and squealed backwards, but thankfully, the guy just turned and ran off down the hill. We hauled ass back to my house and sat in the house with all the doors locked laying hidden in the living room. Good ol' Oregon...

I have also seen the ghost of the grandmother of the family that used to live in my house where I grew up. Multiple times, actually. The family was essentially a bunch of rednecks, lived on the property for a long time, and weren't well accepted by the neighbors. Tossed their trash everywhere, etc etc. My brother and I were about 8 and 9, respectively, and playing out in the field. Suddenly, I saw an old woman walking up our driveway, which slopes down a large hillside. My aunt lives next door but was out of the country, and my parents were both at work, so no one else was around and there were no old women living around for miles. We watched her walk for about 100 feet up the hill, until she went behind a tree and didn't appear again. I saw her about 6 months later, less solid and more "fuzzy", on her knees tending the garden. I stopped dead on the path and she turned back and looked at me. She looked at me for a second and then disappeared, smiling.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
1990. i inherited a small home on an isolated wooded lot in central fla. the owner, my great uncle was in his late 90s when he passed leaving some repairs unattended. wanting to finish some projects and do some landscaping, i decided to stay there overnight.
i loved uncle mark, but he was a bit of a skinflint, with a rabid distrust of utility co.s. hence the house had no tv,phone, or lights outside and very few inside.

night came with the instant darkness peculiar to florida. a cloudy night no stars, a light wind. sleep would not come, and so i amused myself with a portable short wave radio i had brought, until the batteries died.

i heard the 1st footstep outside.

a pause, and the the creak of the stoop outside of the door.

i reviewed my situation, no phone ( of course i did not own a cell phone in those days) there were flashlights, but only dead batteries. no weapons, save for some kitchen cutlery..

once again the footstep followed by the creak, this time by the back door.

i turned on all the lights in the house- which amounted to 4, one in each room.
this had the shadow slaying effect that only a 40 watt bulb can provide.

3 footfalls now irregular spacing, near the kitchen window.

a prowler? big foot? an axe wielding psychopath?

was it my uncle mark? didn't he know he was dead? was he angry because i was using so much electricity?

somewhen in the night i drifted off to sleep. i awoke the next morning . same light wind , cloud cover, a front was moving in from the gulf.
after breakfast, i worked on the lawn.

i was raking pine needles.

behind me a footstep, i nearly screamed! as i whirled around it hit me, a pine cone the size of a butternut squash.
.they were littered all over the lawn. i looked into the pines above me, watching one fall with just enough weight and velocity to sound just like a footstep. it was then i noticed the 2 trees growing side by side, and heard the creaking as their branches rubbed against each other in the wind

imagination, mans most wondrous gift.

This thread is awesome!

Ya'll might dig this story another GLPer posted awhile ago about a metal box found in the woods with a bunch of evidence of experiments on children (many think there's an MKUltra connection). It's a crazy fucking read...

"When my uncle found an old metal box in the woods near Indian Lake, New York, he did not know it contained a mystery. The contents of that box are now beginning to shed light on events that took place fifty years ago."

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
You asked a question a while back...

Yes the vet confirmed it was a wolf killed horse.

The Fed and the Fish and Game? Yes and No.

How can the answer be yes and no you say?

We called the sheriff on a wolf killed horse, They sent Fish and Game. He knew it was a wolf,(because of the kill site evidence ) but told us it was a wild dog, a pack of wild dogs. (We dont have a pack of wild dogs, but we do have wolves.) His boss did not want a wolf killed horse. so he sent the Fed wolf trapper to prove it was not a wolf. He told us it was a cougar. The vet laughted. A cougar would have scratched him with his claws, ...for one. (The vet told us of doctoring cougar ripped horses.) I learned how a bear kills, a cougar, a wolf... all leave their mark. We have wolf scat, hair, tracks leaving the scene, solid evidence it was a wolf. kill. But politics being what they are, even when a wolf is guilty with solid evidence, he is still innocent. Fish and Game and Fed declared it a was a maybe wolf? But then they said "the wolf" came from the Hemlock Pack. so we play games instead of telling truth when it comes to wolves.

North Central Idaho, we had 18,000 elk. Then we brought in teh Expermental wolf. Imported him. Then we had 2,000 elk, now we have less. The imported wolf tears out the young unborn calf and leaves momma cow elk to die.

The Idaho wolf - -pre - import got alog with us all.The import does not know how to behave. Why bring a bigger 150 lb wolf when the smaller 75 pound Idaho loner wolf was here? Now the bigger wolf will kill the smaller. Even the wolf lover shoud want to save the rare endangered Idaho wolf. He is probablly all gone now- killed by the import.

The import has a tapeworm disease our native did not. The tapeworm disease threatens the health of man, and beast, horse, cow, sheep, elk.

Things change. Big O promised change. We got change.

They brought us wolves about 1995, we had wolves which they knew, but things change.

Wolves vary in size and manners. Now we have packs of 25- 30 or more. Teh peopel who live hearer loved teh Idaho wolf. But now? Things change.

Our elk need 15 years to recover, if we had no wolf. Or the old (Idaho) wolf that we had before things changed. People hunt and eat elk so we can't have elk in the woods; agenda 21 get the people off the land; put folks out of business...

Stay out of the woods. The wolves of Russia are there.
They stalk people...

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
When I sold my house I had a hard time finding a rental that would take all my animals - 2 very large dogs & 3 cats so stayed with friends who lived in the woods for a couple of months.

Their drive-way was shaped in an "L" with short part being where they parked their cars near the house and the long part being the steep driveway to the road. There was a bench against the house where they parked their cars.

My dogs were in the fenced back yard but I was worried my two big guys could still get out. One late afternoon I was sitting on the bench in the front going though rental ads and making phone calls when I heard toenails clicking on the driveway. I thought my dogs had jumped the fence from the backyard & were heading out up the driveway.

I got up, ran around back of the parked cars, yelling my dogs' names in a commanding voice. As I rounded the back of the first car and saw what was making the toenail clicking noise I almost had a heart attack!

There, about 6 feet in front of me, was the largest bear I had ever seen just sending there in back of the 2nd car. As I slid to a halt he cocked his head as if to say, "Oh, really? Do you really think you can take me on?"

He was such a beautiful animal it took my breath away and time seemed to stand still. I was totally frozen as we looked at each other. After about maybe 30 seconds, maybe longer, I slowly turned somewhat sideways and started talking in a very soft voice as I slowly side-stepped, back-stepped towards the front door.

It seemed to take forever but I finally made it to the one-step porch while he just stood there watching. Once on the porch I put my hand on the door-knob but didn't go in at first. I wanted to keep looking at him. He wasn't like any bear I had ever seen and I had seen many - usually from a safer distance. He had me mesmerised. We stood there staring at each other but from a safer-for-me distance now. After a few minutes he turned around, went part way up driveway & cut across in a second-level dirt parking area where my cars were parked. He stopped there and took another look down at me for several minutes and then slowly walked across the other, higher parking area towards the trees.

At that point I opened the door & yelled for my friends. The husband came out just in time to see him disappearing into the woods.

In this area we only have the typical black or brown bear. This guy was a beautiful light reddish-tan color but still could have been a black/brown bear. He was huge - by far the largest I had ever seen by 1&1/2 to twice. But what made me think he may not have been the typical bear we have here was he had a much longer nose, his fur was much shorter than a brown bear, and his body, neck & head were more defined & slimmer than the other bears around here. He didn't look as bulky or blubbery as some but, although well-fed & muscular & enormous, his whole body was more symmetrical.

If he was a black or brown he was certainly the king of them for sure!

I'm female and 5'2" so apparently not threatening to him. But, still, I count myself incredibly lucky he didn't attack especially since I was yelling & screaming at what I thought was my dogs but turned out to be him when I rounded that corner and came so close to him.

He was the most beautiful animal I had ever seen!

My brother told me a weird woods story last night after I told him about this thread.

He usually hunts deer on his own land, but this past year he decided to hunt on some wooded land that belongs to my parents. Its about 100 acres of thick forrest. The evening before he was planning on hunting, he took his portable stand and went to scout out a good place to set up his stand for the next morning. He ended up going really deep in to the woods and the sun was just starting to set when he came upon a nice little clearing that was full of acorns. He found a suitable tree and proceeded to set up his stand. He then climbed up in it and sat for a bit to rest before he started the long walk out of the woods back to his truck. As he was sitting he caught a movement off to his right side out of the corner of his eye. He slowly turned to look so as not to startle it with his movements because he assumed it was a deer. It was in fact another hunter. He said the man was "dressed like Daniel Boone" with a coon skin hat and he was carrying a riffle at his side. John, my brother was pissed because the guy was apparently hunting on my parents land where he had no business being. He set very quietly and watched the guy as he approached. He was going to confront him when he came closer but didn't want to scare him and get shot. So the guy came closer and he walkes behind a huge oak tree that was at the edge of the clearing directly across from where John sat. He was totally unaware that he was being watched. John sat and waited for the man to reappear on the other side of the tree. After waiting a minute or two he was like wth is this guy doing because he didn't reappear in a reasonable amount of time. So he climbed down to see what the guy was doing behind the tree. When he got to the tree and looked, there was no one there. The man had simply vanished when he went behind the tree because according to my brother he would have seen him go off in any direction, from his birds eye view up on his stand. Needless to say he was very shaken up and left out of there as fast as he could. The next day he went back to hunt and said he felt really ill at ease the whole time he was there. He was having no luck with the hunting so he decided to walk around a bit and scope out another place to set up. As he left the clearing he found a well travelled game path and followed that for few minutes, it led to a small stream which he crossed and on the other side the path continued ,after a bit he came to another clearing in which there were the remains of an old cabin, nothing much left but a few logs and a chimney. There is no way of knowing if the man he saw was connected in any way to the old cabin, but he said he felt strongly that this was the guys home many years ago. The land has been in my family for years but we don't know any thing about the history of it before we owned it.
