Yes there are flying squirrels, they're a lot smaller than regular gray squirrels and they really do fly. I've been seeing them here in N.E.IL & S.E. WI
for about 12 years, had one land next to my head while bowhunting in a treestand last fall.

These trees were chewed up by what? I'm guessing deer.

Could be a beaver as they are active at times in the winter and could be feeding on trees at points above a snow pack.

My husband & I had two as pets. Cats brought them into house when they were babies so we saved them. We tried to acclimate them back to the wilds as teenagers but they wouldn't leave & would just hang out at doors & windows until they could get back in.

We had a front room with high beams that they liked to hang out on and would glide down to us from the beams. They have large webs in their armpits that allow them to glide.

Best pets ever. Not as aggressive as other squirrels. They were very affectionate.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
My back yard is partly wooded and I see all kinds of animals around here, particularly birds, since I put out seeds and other things for them to eat.
Yeserday was a bit weird, when I was sitting here at the computer and I heard a loud thump from the patio door, it sounded almost hard enough to break the glass.
I saw a hawk on the patio, and when I moved out of my chair, he flew away.
Then I went to the patio door and saw a dove laying under the side of the grill, his eye blinking spasmodically and blood spurting from his head.
Well now I know what happened, the hawk snatched the dove from the grape arbor, lost its grip and it smashed into the patio door, and if you know anything about hawks is that they hit their prey at 50-60 MPH, that's why it was so loud of an impact.
So, I left the dove there for about 5 Min.,and went back stealthily to see if he came back for his prey, and the dumbass hawk was standing at the patio door staring into the house looking for the dove, but the dead dove was laying about 36 inches behind him.
Apparently the hawk thought the dove went into the house, where he was looking until I spooked him.
I eventually took the dead dove out into the yard where a crow ate him.pennywise

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
i live on the west coast of vancouver island and i have
seen my fair share of wierd things,

1.) during the summers here i pack up and live
in the bush by one of our beaches. one day i met
a group of boys looking for a place to camp for free
so i led them to my tent/driftwood living room summer house.
one night they had gone to bed and a random guy comes out
of nowhere and says hes with these guys, I think nothing
of it and offer him a few beers. In the morning he
was gone and had also stolen the boys' visas, passports ect.
The guys had no idea about this other one.. keep in mind
this was about a 25 min hike off any sort of path and he
showed up at about 3 am.

2.) while mushroom picking i found an old military bunker
in an old growth forest, it came up on a 30 degree angle from
under trees that had been there for a long time, with just
a concrete face exposed with a door that was held open from
years of dead foliage buildup. i did not go in, it had a bad vibe.

there is soo much more..

They just have a web of skin like bat wings down their sides, and they jump from tree to tree, with their "wings" out and coast on the air, sort of like a hang glider - but they don't flap them like a bird. Here's a vid:

Not too strange, but here you go, living in FL I was wandering at a lake edge in a swamp, I happened upon a gator trail and found a partially eaten fish that looked rather odd. It appeared to be a rather large semi-prehistoric looking fish from South America, not one you normally could catch fishing in the lake. The gator apparently left it there partially eaten and maggots covered the underside. I didn't stay around to see if I could happen upon a gator.

I tryed to open one of the sealed caves today in full Pazyryk fasion. They did a realy good job sealing that baby up.

I took dumb-ass(horse) with me just in case there were giants.

He alerted me that there was a boulder above my head and in the red clay and red and purple rocks the seemed to be lots of sulfur.

lots of sparks and that smell and dumb-ass realy was in to smelling the hammer.

No. I didn't make it in and when I go back I will get that boulder to fall first.

I also feed birds and my cats love to sit by the patio door watching the birds, one day a Coopers Hawk must have thought the cats were outside and the hawk slammed into the patio door with great velocity.

The cats scrambled then returned to watch the dazed hawk stand by the door trying to regain its composure and senses while I looked up local wildlife rehabilitation centers on the Internet.

The hawk then perched on the squirrel feeder watching the cats for a while then flew off however it must have been hurt. The hawk left a perfect impression on the patio glass door so it hit with great force and I was surprised that the glass was not shattered as he hit the glass with one loud thud.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I used to live in the Midwest in the 70's. My friends and I would always go down to the river just to hang out and there were woods nearby. Now that I think of it I don't know what entranced us about the place.

One time I walked down there by myself. I heard something rustling in the leaves and looked over and saw a 20 python moving! Of course pythons don't live in the Midwest. I'm thinking a couple of my friends put together something that resembled a snake and pulled it along the ground while I was there. I never did see the head or tail of it.

Walking through a forest in the Northwest and it was raining and I seen two kids dressed all in white sitting next to a pond.. they both looked very sad. The reason it is important noting that is was raining was because they did not appear to be wet... to make it stranger my dog didn't seem to notice them. They both gave me a long cold stare... I looked forward then back and walked about 10 feet then looked back and no one was there.

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
I got a special wilderness permit to go into an area in the mountains in CA where they hadn't allowed foot traffic in, in twenty years. There were no trails. It was myself and two other Marines and we did it in exchange for seeing if there was a rare kind of trout in the streams up there. I guess the forest service didn't have anyone who wanted to do it. I'm not sure I was set up with this by a friend. Anyway we hiked for two days with no trails using just a map and compass and on the second day we walked around this huge cliff to find a full on cabin with a lawn and solar power and washer and dryer the whole nine yards all built into the rock face of the cliff. You couldn't see it from above so it had gone unoticed for years. We talked to the guy that lived there and he said we were the first people he had seen hike in, in 14 years. He was a retired helicopter pilot and he had flown all the equipment in by helo. He was squatting on federal land and knew it but didn't seem worried. He said he hikes out every two weeks for supplies by a different route then we came in and he showed it to us. We used that route to get back as he had a trail beaten down so the walking was easier. All in all it was pretty cool. The trout the forest service was looking for were in the creeks so it is still closed to foot travel and we never told the forest service about the old helicopter pilot so I would bet he is still out there.

we were walking deep in the woods in my hometown at the time MD. came upon a cave covered by a large boulder, came back later in the evening around dusk and the boulder had moved to allow whatever passage in or out, this boulder was huge with no possible road or passage to get any heavy machinery to the area to lift the 10' oval boulder that weighed several tonnes...wtf? my friend and I jogged the next couple miles to our car taking turns looking behind us...

Re: Wierd things you have seen in the woods.
bump bump bump

I LOVE this thread!! It's like an old friend, showing up every once in awhile with lots of new stories.

Here's my story. It's not scary like the others, but it made a big impression on me at the time.

It was 1970 or 71. I was a "city girl" who had married into a "good ol' boy" family. Well, it was traditional for the family to go deer hunting together. The place where they would all congregate was called "French Camp", near Yosemite in California. Anyway, when all the guys would leave before dawn the women would stay in camp, usually go back to bed to get up again around 9 or 10 am, then putt around the camp until the guys would all come back in. The women really had no interest in hunting; I think the guys just brought us along to cook for them etc.

Anyway, this was pretty BORING for me, so one morning when the rest of the women went back to bed I decided to go for a walk. There was a little trail, and I figured as long as I stayed on the trail I could just turn around and get back to camp. I'd never been out in that much Nature at one time, so I was taking my time and looking at the plants and trees and stuff. I came around a bend in the trail, and looked ahead and realized I was looking into the eyes of a fawn. He/she still had a few spots left (which is how I figured out that it was a fawn). We just stood there looking at each other - about 10 feet apart. There was massive brush alongside both sides of the trail at that point, almost like a tunnel. Suddenly there was a sort of whistle, (must have been Mama) and the fawn bolted away. Having never seen anything larger than a German Shepherd dog, seeing that fawn really made an impression on me. It was my "secret" memory, and I was happy inside when the guys got "skunked" and came back deer-less - I couldn't imagine killing such a beautiful creature.

I saw a bunch of people in a circle speaking weird languages around a fire dressed in what looked like white robes. I was young at the time so I though they were Satanists.

I later found out that this was a worshipping area of Native Americans and they were doing some tobacco ceremony. The white robes were actually white Indian garments, not Satanist's robes.
