Religions are generally a combination of the previous belief system and the current one. In other words religions phase into new religions keeping elements of older ones. So you have a lot of imagery that relates to previous local belief structures incorporated into the religions, so lots of sun gods and animal spirits and whatever you can imagine people believed in before having a mainstream religion forced on them.
