In an earthquake, you should definitely not drive anywhere. Go outside, as far from any buildings or trees that may fall on you as you can. Then, in the case of a 9.0, bend over and kiss your butt goodbye. :)

You don't run anywhere, it could result in you breaking your knees or legs. Stand in a doorway and hold on. Sitting under the stairs, believe it or not is a relative safe(ish) place to be.

Regarding a 9.0, if you were caught in the middle of that, you would be lucky to escape anywhere.

Doorways are actually not very safe. They have a door that can swing into you. And unless you have personally reinforced your doorway, it's probably not any safer than the rest of the house.

Your also not supposed to run outside DURING the quake. During the quake, things tend to fall off of buildings and crash down on people running outside. Wait until the shaking stops, then run outside.

Your supposed to find a sturdy piece of furniture and put your head and torso underneath it, your entire body if you can stuff it all under. But your brain and heart are the two body parts that your supposed to protect. They are kinda hard to replace.

Alternately, you could press against a wall, just make sure that your away from anything that could fall on top of you. (Bookshelves, tv's, pictures, etc.)

Just try to get outside of your house, and lay down somewhere soft with nothing that could fall on you. Then, once it is over, be VERY VERY careful if you go near anything that looks unsafe because an aftershock could collapse it.

Especially since aftershocks can be of a different frequency and direction, so it could hit the resonance frequency of something that was totally sturdy in the last quake.
