For those who would like to help the victims of the recent Typhoon, there are a several international organizations that everyone is familiar with such as the Red Cross who have set up special donations for the areas affected. As for local groups, I have been in touch with the Iligan Bloggers Society and know for certain that 100% of the funds raised by them will go to aiding the victims. They have been doing a lot all across the Philippines once the scope of the disaster was realized by setting up drop off points throughout the country and delivering essentials to those in need. Here is a link to their page where you can donate as little as $1 via paypal. [link to iliganbloggers.com] If you are in a position to help financially please do so, if not, please keep the people in Mindanao in your prayers this Christmas season as they have a very long road to recovery.

Not sure money is the answer. Red Cross has lost a lot of credibility since 9/11 misappropriation of funds followed by another similar incident in Berma and again in Haiti.

Money is needed here now as this will be a long term recovery. there are almost 50,000 living in shelters. The link I provided goes to a local organization that I have worked with in recent days. You can be certain that 100% of the money collected will go to the victims. They are not using any of the money for administrative costs. (As with the larger organizations) They have zero overhead which allows all of the money to go where it is needed most. This group has also organized drop off points throughout the Philippines. What this group has accomplished since the flooding occurred is truly remarkable. There have been several news stories related to this organization and the great things they have done so far.

Re: AT LEAST 1,500 DEAD ---- Philippines MASSIVE FLASH FLOODS --- Twitter breaking news link
If you send money to an org like the Red Cross then you might feel good. You want to feel your money is helping suffering people.

If you hand over cash to the Red Cross you'll be paying for the CEO's private jet or his fleet of luxury cars or his palatial homes. Very little of the money sent to the Red Cross goes to needy people.

The Red Cross takes the money and if they don't spend it on themselves immediately they keep it in interest-paying accounts.

I do not know of any cases where money to the Red Cross actually went to help the people they asked money for.

There is only one org I know of who spends all or almost all of the charitable contributions to the intended victims and that's the Salvation Army.

* If you can't give the cash or goods directly to the people you want to help and use a third party then almost certainly your money will go towards lining some already extremely wealthy man's pockets even more... and the Red Cross is the worst of the lot!

You make some great points. Where's the proof?

I know for sure many elite organizations operate this way, but the Red Cross?
