December 27, 2011 – JAKARTA — One of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes erupted Tuesday, spewing clouds of ash and panicking villagers but no evacuation has been ordered so far, a government vulcanologist said. The first eruption at Mount Lokon was at 3:07 am (1907 GMT Monday), followed by two more bursts within minutes, Farid Bina told AFP from a monitoring post near the volcano on Sulawesi island. “The eruption was heard as far as five kilometers (three miles) away, causing panic among villagers living close to the volcano,” he said, adding that winds blew volcanic ash to villages up to five kilometers to the east and northeast. “Two villages with about 10,000 people each have been affected by the ash, which stopped later in the morning,”... December 26, 2011 – PHILIPPINES – Mt. Bulusan has been showing signs of abnormal activity these past two weeks. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and SeismologyDirector Renato Solidum said at least 10 quakes were felt around the volcano. Solidum said they noted changes in the form of soil around Mt. Bulusan. Phivolcs warned of possible ash explosion and advised residents to observe the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone around the mountain. The agency advised the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to tell their pilots to avoid flying near the volcano. –Journal [ link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

More than 5,200 people were evacuated to temporary shelters when the 1,580-metre volcano erupted in July, sending huge clouds of ash as high as 3,500 metres (11,500 feet) into the sky. Lokon’s last deadly eruption was in 1991, killing a Swiss tourist. The Indonesian archipelago has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the “Ring of Fire” between the Pacific and Indian oceans. The country’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions last year. [ link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

Mount Lokon, together with Mount Empung, is a twin volcano (2.2 km/1.4 mi apart) in the northern Sulawesi, Indonesia, roughly 10 km (6 mi) south of Manado. Both rise above the Tondano plain and are among active volcanoes of Sulawesi. Mount Lokon has a flat and craterless top.[1] Lokon formed during a period of andesitic volcanism on ring fractures resulting from the Tondano caldera's early to mid-Pleistocene collapse. Recently-erupted material remains andesitic in composition [2] and consists of ash plumes and, less commonly, pyroclastic flows and lava domes. [1] The volcano erupted on 15 July 2011, forcing thousands of people to evacuate.[3] Indonesia has 129 volcanoes including Mount Lokon. The last major eruption of Mount Lokon before in 1991, killed a Swiss hiker and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.[ [ link to en.wikipedia.org] |
