Are you training for SHTF?
I have to admit I have slacked in my training the last few years. Part of me thinks having an extra 20 lbs of muscle and needing 4,000 calories a day in a SHTF scenario would not be good. However if you are Rambo and can jack people then it would make sense. Has anyone like Rawls broke this down as to what a SHTF training program should be?

I am sticking to aerobics and stretching over extra lifting to improve my oxygen respiration but thats about it.

Re: Are you training for SHTF?
Martial arts training is the way to go. Practical for self defense, increases endurance, and strength trains muscles in a way that is usable. Most "weight training" isn't dynamic enough and isn't as practical for labor.

On a side note. Don't be fooled into bulk=strength. Many bulking guys do it for show and gear their diet toward bulky muscles. Lean, dense muscles have more range and weigh less so you can do more.

I suggest plenty of stretching and lower body (back down) training. But don't ignore upper body. Mix it up with high rep low weight and low rep high weight for both endurance and strength.

I don't wanna get to detailed, but if there's enough interest I will.

Re: Are you training for SHTF?
ive read some stuff on it and they suggest cardio and basic weight exercising to promote the ability to handle potential long hikes through rough terrain and essentially the strength to handle the manual labor needed to plant gardens by hand, cutting firewood with axes, that sort of stuff.

get lean and mean...just be able to hike 10 miles in a day and work all day on the land so to speak.

im dropping some lbs and getting my strength back through bench, squats, dumb bells, and jogging/stretching...i need to do it anyway.

Re: Are you training for SHTF?
For ideas into what would be useful in a SHTF type theater look into special forces barrier testing.
This is the style of endurance/strength that would be useful in such a situation.
It's completely useless if you can bench-press XXX kg's of weight but can't lift your own body weight, or can't run a couple of kilometers at speed carrying gear.

You obviously never did any backpacking. 50lbs is pretty standard for equipment and a couple days food, assuming there's a water source. If you're packing all your water then 75lbs is more like it (includes cooking water). 25lbs is more like group AT hiking where you ship your food to yourself and only pack bare minimum. By bare minimum I mean no hatchet or saw, small first aid pack, and no shelter.

Re: Are you training for SHTF?
Having a little extra around the middle isn't a bad idea.

Basically you need to train to be able to work hard all day, sprint fast, and win fist, and gun fights.

So strength and endurance are essential. However you need to be able to explode, and run fast, and fight hard.

Walking with a pack long distances, running, weight training, and eating a lot are how I am training.
