Cancer smell or tooth abscess smell?
After leaving my room and returning several hours later, I noticed a strange scent. I can tell its not stale marijuana smoke, I can tell its not my normal BO smell...it smells weird.

I'm a bit scared since it kind of reminds me of the hospital or old person smell. It's like, strong yet also subtle. Almost as if you won't instantly notice it but when you do it won't leave your mind. It isn't horrifically offensive....but it definitely smells OFF and not normal.

I also have been fighting a major tooth abscess / mouth infection, and am wondering if a tooth abscess produces a similar chemical reaction in the body to produce these smells. It would be a logical assumption, but thought I'd double check with a bunch of trolls and healthtards like yourselves

Our unique body odor comes from whatever flora/fauna we cultivate in our gut and on our skin.

Probiotics can help keep a healthy internal/external 'garden', so can avoiding sugar and refined carbohydrates.

Some dogs can definitely detect cancer and other illnesses by smell -- so it is possible some people can as well.

Cancer absolutely has a smell - the first time I was in a the cancer wing of a hospital I almost threw up. I was a young child and didn't understand and felt terrible once I did.

If you are having issues with your teeth, it is most likely that! Of course an infection in your mouth can smell...Time to find a new dentist and not get yourself so scared ;)

Use oregano oil on that tooth abscess until you can get to a dentist. Not taking care of a tooth infection can be detrimental to your health.

Re: Cancer smell or tooth abscess smell?
Abscess Tooth<= That is the cause

Like tremors preceding a volcanic eruption, that odor almost always arrives after the abscess flares up or throbs. The pain's caused by a pressure build up. The odor's caused by the release of that pressure, also described as a draining.

Pay close attention after it throbs, that's when you're probably detecting the aroma.

Symptoms of an abscessed tooth

Fever
Pain when chewing
Sensitivity of the teeth to hot or cold
Bitter taste in the mouth
Foul smell
Swollen neck glands
General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling
Redness and swelling of the gums
Swollen area of the upper or lower jaw
An open, draining sore on the side of the gum

hun?

Elderly smell like that because their immune system is so weak that the bacterias from the mouth can spread allover the body. Mouth bacterias are the one creating clogs and heart inflammations.

You need to take a break on the pot. It has a tendency to make people over react to things making them slightly paranoid.

I've heard of cancer having an odor that dogs can pick up.

So if the odor from your cancer was strong enough that it would be linger in the room for you to smell when you return.

You would be on your death bed.

Tooth infection/abscess does have an odor, I don't see it lingering in a room tho.

Your mouth is obviously very close to your nose :)

Dear OP, this quoted response above is indeed correct and the fact that you are now smelling the strong scent of your developing infection is a clear WARNING SIGN by your body's built-in response systems ... that is now going off like a smoke detector would during a fire!

Even young, healthy people can get deadly infections quickly along with major secondary complications & this is not a joking matter! Most people do not consider the way the anatomy is actually structured in their bodies and how fast infections can spread & suddenly go "out of control" + cause havoc with other vital organ systems .....

ABSCESS = SIGN OF BACTERIAL TISSUE INVASION THAT IS EATING AWAY AT FLESH (& OTHER STRUCTURES OF BODY TOO, SUCH AS VESSELS, TENDONS, NERVES, ETC ) WITH RESULTING PURULENT MATERIAL ACCUMULATION = DRAINAGE & SWELLING & PAIN.

It is important to get proper care now as the infected material loaded w/ pathogenic bacteria is continuously draining (via gravity) not only downwards into your chest / thoracic structures & organs (through your lymphatic system) but also when you are reclining/sleeping, the infected fluids will automatically drain towards the posterior regions of your head & neck thus setting up possibility of infection spreading into your brain!! Any infection that's in the mouth, sinuses, jaw, etc is only separated from the brain & CSF (cerebro-spinal fluids) by thin membranes of tissue... and the delicate regions in the back of mouth / pharnyx - throat into nect are especially vulnerable.

See: [link to health.nytimes.com]

And btw, there's new studies recently published proving 100% that oral cavity / tooth infections will often lead to subsequent problems w/ the heart that may not even be detected at the time (primarily from bacteria attaching to & quietly "eating away" at heart tissues or the valves & their leaflets --> example: mitral valve).

Be aware there are critically-important valves in the heart that separate the 4 chambers + control the flow of blood from outlets of the ventricles (Right Ventricle into lungs via Pulmonary Artery & on the left side of heart into the body's biggest vessel, the Aorta, from the powerful Left Ventricle). If one of those gets infected as can happen, then you are in BIG trouble -- so do not let this infection endanger your life.

PS: Worked many years as a ER / Critical Care Nurse + Educator ,, certainly not some geek or troll as you wrongfully imply towards readers in your initial post ... please, contemplate within your "self" why the urge to insult those of us who would bother to read your thread? Many here have have knowledge & skills gained over a lifetime of work & service to others. I for sure am a very caring & helpful human/e be-ing that has saved many lives & still do so on a regular basis as am also trained Firefigher & Paramedic too and often serve as a first responder at car wrecks or any crisis situation until qualified help arrives to take over.

Re: Cancer smell or tooth abscess smell?
Hiya. You'd be surprised just how nasty-smelling a mouth infection can get. I myself had a periapical abscess not too long ago (And I've had pretty decent oral hygiene all my life) and let me tell you, it was not pretty.

......oh and I'm a nurse. So when I say something smelled, you had better believe it smelled. I would say that most likely what you're getting a whiff of is not the worst case scenario; it's probably just normal infection smell. If you're very worried, ask your doctor straight out. If he's not a total prick he won't laugh or belittle you. (And if he is, then find a new doctor). We're used to hearing things like this all the time. The thing is, when you're scared and don't know what's going on, your mind wanders. You stop thinking rationally. And we know that you're just trying to understand and cope. So don't be afraid of sounding silly.

I have cancer and there is a smell caused by the medication, but it's a sweet sticky smell and is related to liver damage caused by interferon...they actually call it sweet death or sweet shit because it is almost flowerlike in quality and is noticeable in feces and through skin.
The foul smell might be your tooth, or bad bong water.

Re: Cancer smell or tooth abscess smell?
Treat the Abcess.

Get yourself Fishmox: [link to www.vetdepot.com]

500mg capsules.

Mind this is the SAME exact thing as Amoxicillin, if you are allergic to penicillin do not use it.

Warnings and cautions for Amox/icillin: [link to www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Take 500 mg (one capsule) in the morning, and one at night - 12 hours apart. Thus say 8 Am and 8PM.

Do that for ten days. That should kill out the bacteria of the abscess.

But it doesn't cure the cause. Either you have a bad tooth root issue or you have gum disease. Both need to be seen by a dentist and require a bit of mechanical work.

Along with the 500MG twice daily Fish mox - you will need to gargle and swish three times a day with salt water. 1/4 tsp salt to a 1/4 cup WARM water. That should give you two mouthfuls to swish and gargle with.

Swish and gargle the first time with salt water, then rinse with fresh clear water. Swish and gargle the second time, spit out the water and DO NOT rinse. you want to leave a bit of salt in there to work its way between gum and tooth.

While cancer does have a smell, most humans can't smell it, infections also leave a smell. Most likely you are sweating at night while you sleep thus leaving a layer on the bed sheets.

You should strip the bed, wash the sheet and padding, spray the mattress with something like febreeze. Let it dry a couple of hours and flip and rotate the upper mattress. Then spray, let dry a couple of hours, then dress the bed.

The reality is that when you sleep, you are constantly exhausting lots of water vapor, sweat and other things. People who make their bed upon rising end up with stinky sheets sooner. those who pull the blanket and top sheet down to allow air flow for an hour or so end up with fresher smelling bedding.

It also has a huge impact on the life of the mattress, letting it air down in the morning.

Mind, when you take the fish mox you will stink more than usual - the Amoxicillin will work its way through your pours.

Other things that stink - fevers, colds, flus - well just about any infection...

It's your tooth. I was a dental assistant. Like any infection, it will smell. Tooth and gum infections are foul and nasty. Especially in the advanced stages.

I can tell when someone has infected gums. It also has a nasty smell.

Go see your dentist. Not sure if you said that already or not. But you don't want to mess with tooth infections. Get it treated and taken care of asap.

Good luck.
