I think many young people over the age of 22-23 have little hope. They graduate from college and there are no good jobs to be had. The worst thing about unemployment is the 'depression' that sets in after a certain point, it feeds on itself.

Re: 45% of people age 16-29 are unemployed
I read this article a day or so ago and it stuck a nerve with me as well. I've seen a lot of people downplay numbers like this or simply point to laziness or entitlement mentality of generation y/ late generation x.

In some cases there's an element of truth to the generalization, but for the most part it's a f*cking wholesale whitewash. A person cannot hope to find a job where there are none to be had.. blood from a stone much? And don't give me that McJOB bullshit. NO ONE CAN SURVIVE ON THAT LET ALONE BE A *responsible citizen* AND PAY DOWN ON DEBT. I mean COME ON- did a college graduate in the 60s work at McDonalds?

Also, geographic location plays a MAJOR part in whether or not a person will succeed. The amount of effort a person has to put in to find even a menial job in my area is preposterous to say the very least. I WISH this article would have broke the total percentile down into recent graduates in particular geographic locations, highlighting danger zones. Though that data would probably have been consistant with high/low(ER) unemployment rates..

Additionally, highlighting the fact that older Americans are richer than the young doesn't tell the whole story either. I would love to see the average income for a high school graduate (then vs now) AND likewise for the college graduate.

Not to mention the amount of college graduates in recent years has skyrocketed because of employer requirements.. Entry level workers, stradled with debt, do jobs today which require a college degree, WHICH DID NOT IN THE PAST. This compounds things making the individual even worse off because of debt incurred which would have never existed prior.

Not trying to be a dick, just my opinion..

People are pretty numb these days. The OWS protests are a prime example. Hippies or not, there should be major rioting in the financial district of every major city.

What you got was a bunch of dumbasses who just thought they had to "show up" to win. Then they were arrested and kicked out peacefully. That didn't exactly stick it to the man or let the government know people won't put up with the wholesale looting of the financial system. Quite the contrary.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8007633

I think this comment might be a little misunderstood. I'm only 32, but when I was 12 I'd deliver newspapers for a small amount of money. It was relatively hard work but it taught me several lessons about working hard and being responsible.

Now all kids are taught that they are special. The idea of toiling; doing physical labor in extreme conditions, doesn't fit into their perception that they should be the boss. These kids grow up and never learn about being self reliant. Its amazing how often in my career that I must deal with parents still handling the finances of 20+ old adults.

For those that say well these people are in school. Many of them are in school because the job market is so difficult. There are a lot of young adults in school racking up student loans because that is the only way they can support themselves. The get a BA and can't find a job so they go on to get a worthless Master's hoping that maybe in 2 more years there will be jobs. There still won't be jobs in 2 more years but they will be another 60G in debt.

Re: 45% of people age 16-29 are unemployed
Do the numbers from ages 16-22 really mean that much? The teens are in high school and a good portion of those 22 and under are college students. Many wouldn't have jobs in the best of economies let alone a poor one. Posting the number in ages 23-29 would be more significant - or comparing the current numbers to a year when the economy was happily chugging along.
 Quoting: Faith

I was on my own by 18.

I had a fairly large number of friends who were too.

It absolutely matters.

By 23 if you haven't had significant work experience and aren't a rich kid with good connections, or a very rare and marketable set of skills, you could be screwed for life.
The later you start at the bottom the longer it takes to rise up too.

While I agree that a shit load of people are unemployed... just look at the want ads in the paper and on the internet and there are TONS of jobs available.

Just because you can't get the job you WANT doesnt mean you dont have to fucking work... Go work at a factory or shoveling shit at a farm or digging ditchs.

"Man, I see in Fight Club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see it squandered. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables – slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our great war is a spiritual war. Our great depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won't. We're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off."

well most are in high school or college or living with parents, so duhh!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4959545

Since when? Sure 16-21 year olds might be, but after. No. There are some grad students that fit into the 21-24, but they're not typically living with parents, they're on their own.

I wrote about this earlier. During the Great Depression we had 32 million on assistance and that was broken up into three categories, the CCC and the WPA. The first got paid $30 a month and $25 of that went directly to parents. It was set up for young unemployed men. The later got part-time low wage temporary jobs or assistance to keep workers in their jobs. Then there people who couldn't work like elderly folks and they got about $100 a month. That's it.

Now we have something like 99 million that get Social Security, disability, veteran benefits, food stamps, WIC program and on and on. I'm thinking that if we had another Depression, which seems very likely, that it would be just chaos. Can you imagine what the government would have to do if they couldn't get people to buy government securities? We're insolvent to the tune of over $15 Trillion

Are there jobs? I know North Dakota is hiring and that's about it. There are tons of nursing jobs, but that takes a minimum of a Associates Degree in Nursing. They're aren't any manufacturing jobs. Our politicians sold us out with free trade.

There are some low wage jobs, but the competition is fierce. A lot of older folks are hanging on to their jobs and delaying retirement.

There are no easy answers if you really look at the statistics. It would be easy to say people are lazy, but we have young people with college degrees that can't find work and people laid off that can't find work.
