Most parents with ADHD kids however think they're being taken care of when they get the prescription to put their kid on speed.

Now that there is a shortage of the stuff these parents will be desparately seeking alternatives. Please forward the message below (including my sinature with the URL's intact) to anyone and any list where this might be true.

OTC AGENTS TO PROMOTE NORMAL HEALTHY ATTENTION AND ACTIVITY LEVELS.

Ritalin, Adderall, etc. work by helping the brain maintain higher levels of the catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. They also affect epinephrine (also called adrenaline) which mostly does things outside the brain. These 3 neurotransmitters are collectively referred to as the 'catecholamines,' and are all made by the same enzymes mostly.

There are many over the counter agents that are quite safe and can also increase the levels of or the effects of these neurotransmitters and that have similar effects on people who take them. The effects are mild, and do not cause any dependence or habituation so these OTC agents don't have abuse potential. They can be used alone for mild effects, or combined with the prescription agents to make those work better (or at a lower dose).

l-tyrosine and l-phenylalanine are amino acids - ordinary components of the diet - that the body makes the catecholamine neurotransmitters from. Taking several grams a day of these makes a person have lots more of these neurotransmitters. Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in the conversion of these amino acids to neurotransmitters and 100 mg with each meal helps improve conversion and increase the amount of catecholoamines.

The way the catecholamines work in your brain is to bind to a receptor that turns on an enzyme and makes something called "cyclic adenosine monophosphate' or cyclic AMP or cAMP for brevity, inside the cells. cAMP is the signalling molecule that tells a nerve cell to do what it is supposed to do. More catecholamine activity, be it from a normal healthy brain, or ritalin or adderall, or from eating l-tyrosine or l-phenylalanine means more cAMP.

There is a nutritional supplement called forskolin, or coleus forskohlii extract, that activates this same enzyme. Taking forskolin raises cAMP levels and has the same effect on the neurons in question as taking ritalin. Reasonable amounts to take for a small child are 10 mg a few times a day (and adjust dose for best response), adults can take 30-50 mg at a time. You can get this in nice small capsules at www.lef.org or www.vrp.com. It is also available at many other vendors.

The reason cAMP doesn't just build up and up and up and up until you are focused like a laser beam on an ant walking across your desk is that there is also an enzyme that destroys it. Some very familiar over the counter agents block that enzyme. Destroying cAMP more slowly means levels go up and it has a similar effect to taking ritalin. These very familiar agents are caffeine and its relatives. Coffee. Tea. Cola. Chocolate.

Tea has theophylline which doesn't lead to as much of a feeling of being focussed as caffeine does. Depending on what your kid likes and how he acts coffee or cola (or no-doz) may be preferable to tea, or vice versa. Tea is especially good in allergic and asthmatic people.

While these agents individually are seldom used in large enough amounts to have the impact of a nice big dose of ritalin or adderall, if you combine them they are pretty potent. They act together synergystically (and are also synergistic with the adderall or ritalin if combined with those and permit use of lower dosages).

One last comment is that much of how these drugs supposedly work is by enhancing norepinephrine activity. Strattera is a drug for ADHD that specifically does this and only this. The old cold remedy, pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) that you have to sign your life away to get any more is a very close relative of Adderall and norepinephrine and in the body does what norepinephrine does. It promotes energy, focus and attention. It also sometimes promotes aggression. It can also be combined with the materials above if need be.

If you can't get the stimulant medication you or your child uses for ADHD you might try the above substitutes. Most people report them as being less 'harsh' feeling and having fewer side effects.

I know, it's disgusting, isn't it? I raised a step-son for a while that had been on ... get this ... triple the dosage of Adderall by the time I entered his life. It was causing a complete mental break for the poor kid and they were knocking him out with anti-psychotics at bedtime.

It took me about 3 months, but I ended up weening him off the meds and started controlling his diet. Within a month of that his entire family kept repeating, "Wow, what have you done with him? He's a polar opposite of what he was not too long ago!"

It was one of my proudest moments, honestly.

That's great you got your step-son off of that stuff. The medications hey had him on almost sounds like some sort of MKULTRA experiment. He must have been completely tormented. Adderall is great at first, but it totally makes you insane after a while; anti-psychotics are awful meds that make you a zombie and and can make you shake and tic.
Good for you!

I don't know the answer to your question although it might be in a Wall Street Journal article from several months back.

They noted that 30% of today's teens are taking at least one prescription drug long term!

If anybody wants doom, that statistic is just about the biggest doom there is. There is no way the US ever pulls out of the problems we are having today if that high a number of young people are on prescription drugs.

When a person needs one drug, it usually isn't too long before they are taking two or more.

So glad someone made this topic!!!!!! Let's see the doctors create a disease, come up with an addictive drug to "treat" it, run scare companies to gullible mothers to get every other kid in the nation to be diagnosed with it, then get the government to limit supplies while pharma lobbyist line DEA/FDA agents pockets. Yup nothing wrong here at all just business as usual im america. Fuck it why don't we legalize all drugs instead of just letting big pharma make money off all the addicts. Yup guess what people adder all is just legal SPEED people. OxyContin?? Guess what legal HEROIN. Mummy's Xanax and Valium? Legal tranquilizers. So why is it that we allow this? Why do we live in a country like this? Because we live in a country where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.. And I ain't taking no occupy wall street 99% BS. We need radical revolution.. F*CK big pharma we need radical and immediate redistribution of wealth in this country

Most of the kids given Ritalin and adderal in their school years end up on meth.
In my opinion meth is being pushed by the government and the medical and pharmaceutical industries.
One thing I noticed here in East texas where I live is that nearly every young person is either is on meth or lives with someone who is. It's hard to find a kid not on it.

And don't kid yourself Ritalin and adderal are methamphetamines and children have legal access to what is considered a very addictive and damaging drug. There is no doubt about the fact that the intent is to cause long term brain damage, because it is known and well established that once a person has taken methamphetamine, they are never the same again no matter what and the cause is permanent irreversible brain damage. So why are the brightest and hardest children to brainwash being intentionally brain damaged?

Soo TRUE!! Ritalin is even worse. In studies drug users couldn't tell the difference between IV cocaine and IV Ritalin! This is crazy. Look at OxyContin. Killing thousands for the last decade and then just last year Purdue miraculously comess out with a tamper proof casing for it the pill. Ya right.. These companies get so fing rich off people's suffering and addiction! They know this and yet continue. Even though most of the pills are sold on the black market they get the final payout. Ban all addictive drugs and creak up big pharma. Universal health care for al. Radical redistribution of wealth immediately! End the suffering

ADHD has gotten worse as TV and movie producers have shorted the lengths of their camera shots from 3 seconds to sometimes 2 or even one 1 second. Commericals are by far the worst.

The next time you watch television, count how many seconds it takes to for them to switch perspectives. It's well known that it takes 3 seconds for the mind to begin interpretation of something, but if you can constantly bombard the mind with changing angles, you excite the fight or flight mechanism within our brain.

There is new evidence that ADHD may actually be the early manifestation of Narcolepsy.

I have narcolepsy. When my son was 2 or 3 he became very hyperactive. I noticed that his hyper-activity followed the same pattern that my extreme drowiness had always followed: I feel fine and alert when I wake up, but 30-60 minutes after waking I become extremely drowsy and want nothing more than to go back to bed! Exactly how you'd feel if you took a sleeping pill first thing in the morning!

My son's hyperactivity followed the same pattern: he was just fine when he woke up - mild and pleasant, but 30-60 minutes after waking up, look out! The cutest little whirlwind you've ever seen! LOL! But he would sometimes be very unreasonable, stubborn and defiant.

How do kids usually act when they're tired? Hyper, cranky, and unreasonable!!

About 7 years ago, I brought this up to my narcolepsy doctor. I asked him if this could simply be how children act when they have narcolepsy, considering the fact that many kids get hyper when they're tired. In a very quizzical voice, he said "Hmmmm, I don't really know". He had a very intrigued and thoughtful look on his face when he said it - you could just see the wheels turning! LOL

He explained that there's not a lot of information on children with narcolepsy, but they have diagnosed in children as young as 2 or 3. My doctor is one of the top neurologists in the USA. He's super-awesome by the way. He was even on an "Unexplained Mysteries" episode about sleep-walking and crimes committed during sleep-walking. :)

My son is now 15 and he is no longer hyperactive. He has never been diagnosed with ADHD nor has he ever taken any ADHD meds so that has nothing to do with the hyperactivity disappearing. He is becoming more somnolent as he gets older, I hope it's not narcolepsy.

Just this past year while doing some research on narcolepsy, I found an official, scientific article stating the same thing I had always suspected! That a great deal of children diagnosed with ADHD go on to "develop" narcolepsy later in life! Which leads scientists to speculate that the so-called ADHD the children had was actually an early manifestation of narcolepsy!

I always secretly wonder if I put a "bee" in my doctor's bonnet! He is one of the top sleep researchers in the country, if not the world and plays a huge role in developing new treatments and discoveries in the sleep disorders field. He did have an interesting look on his face after I mentioned my hunch to him. Hmmmm..... ;)

Anyhow, just thought I'd throw this out there. I think it's pretty fascinating myself.

I forgot to mention that Ritalin is used for both ADHD and for Narcolepsy. Kinda strange how it works. Ritalin is actually a stimulant (basically speed). If someone is hyper, it slows them down. If someone is drowsy, it stimulates their brain to be more alert and awake. I have always wondered how this can be! This is part of the reason I started contemplating the ADHD-Narcolepsy connection.

I occasionally take the generic version of Ritalin for my narcolepsy (legal Rx).

The name for generic Ritalin is Methylphenidate.

Go figure.

They will get everyone hooked on their candy and then they will cut them off.

My gut feeling told me this would happen. I got off their poisons almost a year ago because of this. Not ADHD but other poison they told me would help.

Peace

Re: Lack of ADHD drugs prompt hundreds of complaints daily (Doctors wrote 51.5 million ADHD prescriptions in 2010)
For one thing, the 51 million prescriptions thing is skewed by the fact that by federal law, doctors must write the prescription for scheduled ADHD stimulant medications on a monthly basis with no refills allowed. So the 51 million prescriptions actually represents about 4 and a quarter million Americans, or about 1.4% of the population on ADHD medication. This is actually less than half of the estimated population of people affected by ADHD.

I think it's rather dumb of the posters here to dismiss ADHD as a made up thing, because it kind of ruins lives and families. Read the book Driven to Distraction. It is an old book, one of the first on ADHD, but it is a very good book about it by someone who has lived with it and treated it for over 40 years.

The best treatment plans for ADHD involve therapy, behavioral counseling to help develop better life skills, and either stimulant or non-stimulant medication. People who the medication made into crackheads probably didn't have ADHD or they were snorting it.

Full disclosure: I have ADHD. It pretty much fucked up my school career because my parents didn't believe in either behavioral therapy or medication. In college I got diagnosed and treated and got straight A's from then on out. My dad also has it, but goes undiagnosed because he doesn't believe in psychiatry. He's ruined 2 marriages and several careers because of really classic ADHD behavior.

So if you want to tell me ADHD doesn't exist, or that I'm some sort of pharma shill, or some other woo woo bullshit about how I'm making up my mental problems, please go die in a fire.

The narcolepsy-ADHD connection is a very new finding, within the last year they have discovered this.

Interestingly enough, the most common time for narcolepsy symptoms to appear is around puberty. My symptoms began at around age 11.

Google narcolepsy + ADHD. There's not a lot out there because this info is so new. I stumbled upon this info about 8 or 9 months ago, so there might be much more published about it by now (I should look now that I am thinking about it!).

Pretty interesting stuff if you ask me. Consider the simple fact that the same STIMULANT medication (Ritalin) is used to treat two (supposed) completely different disorders with complete polar-opposite symptoms!

How can a medication in one instance cause a person to calm down (and sometimes fall asleep), and in another instance the same drug causes a person to speed up and become more alert and awake???

There is obviously a strong connection between these two disorders. I believe the connection is that they are one-in-the-same, but are simply different stages of the same disorder. Narcolepsy is centered in the hypothalamus. I believe ADHD is as well.

If I were in the market to go back to college, THIS would be my area of study. It's fascinating! And I (as a lay-person) am determined to get to the bottom of it!

Another thing....

I have narcolepsy, but I also have very severe ADD (not ADHD) symptoms. These are both very real conditions, no doubt about it. And they are both extremely life-damaging.

verysad

I just think it's so interesting that my narcolepsy is treated with Ritalin, but so is my (undiagnosed) ADD. Before I realized I have ADD, I used to wonder what they do for people with narcolepsy that also have ADD? What meds would you give a person with narcolepsy that's already on Ritalin, if they also have ADD? Shortly after that, I ran out of my Ritalin and I was a total mess - more disorganized and distracted than usual. This is when I came to the conclusion that I MUST also have ADD.

ya sounds like you got through that ordeal perfectly intact psychologically.

I was forced to take ADHD medication for 12 years...

My school years were destroyed because of it...

...

I praise God every day for that.

I am smarter and much more open minded then every one of my graduating class peers.

I didn't spend my times conforming to mainstream trends and sports, but instead learn so much about science and things that I MYSELF wanted to learn and take part in, instead of what other people and the corrupt school deemed prestigious and worthwhile.

I am awake; Jesus is my Lord and savior, I understand SO MUCH.

I pray for every child that has to go through the hell of school, not knowing if that mean kid will hit you or verbally abuse you while the teacher does nothing, not knowing who is your friend or who is your enemy, not knowing anything. Being forced to do monotonous work under the label that you are stupid and irrational and hyper.

I am smarter than those evil teachers and kids will ever be; praise Jesus Christ for that.
