Though the connection with this earthquake is not clear, Tepco announced water is leaking from the cooling system of spent fuel pool in reactor 4. [...] It seems that the earthquake may have done something. |

"Moving on to Unit 4: Unit 4 is leaning. TEPCO acknowledges that Unit 4 is leaning. The structure is obviously compromised from the fires and the explosion on Unit 3. But It's tilting at the top and that's not good. If there is a seismic aftershock as a result of the first earthquake, Unit 4 could collapse. TEPCO is trying dramatically to shore up that building, but it's tough. It's really tough. There have also been some photos released of inside the unit's floor pool and the racks appear to have maintained their integrity." “In his recent blog, entitled “The Fourth Reactor and the Destiny of Japan”, Akio Matsumura correctly identifies the spent fuel pool in Unit 4 as the most serious potential threat for further massive radioactive releases from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.” The Fourth Reactor and the Destiny of Japan, Akio Matsumura, September 29, 2011: “I, along with many eminent scientists, are emphasizing the precarious situation of the fourth reactor that contains 1,535 nuclear fuel rods in the pool and is balanced on the second floor, outside of the reactor containment vessel. If the fuel rods spill onto the ground, disaster will ensue and force Tokyo and Yokohama to close, creating a gigantic evacuation zone. All scientists I have talked with say that if the structure collapses we will be in a situation well beyond where science has ever gone. The destiny of Japan will be changed and the disaster will certainly compromise the security of neighboring countries and the rest of the world in terms of health, migration and geopolitics. The Japanese government should immediately create an independent assessment team to determine the structural integrity of the spent fuel pool and its supporting structure. This is of the highest importance: the structure’s security is critical to the country’s future.” |

Photo: Shaw-ArevaOne of the unique characteristics of mixed oxide fuel is that relatively little of the plutonium in the fuel rods is used up in the fuel cycle in a reactor. “When the plutonium in the fuel rods goes into a reactor for commercial power, a very little of it is going to be consumed. I don’t know what percentage, maybe half percentage or something like that, but it’s going to generate an extraordinary amount of contamination throughout the fuel rods…,” says William Lawler, an expert on radioactive waste." Commonly cited quote by Ralph Nader, states that a pound of plutonium dust spread into the atmosphere would be enough to kill 8 billion people. However, the math shows that one pound of plutonium could kill no more than 2 million people by inhalation. [link to en.wikipedia.org] Whew! a pound will ONLY kil 2 million. |

At that time I was worried that the added weight would cause add to the problem. The seismic activity since then has obviously weakened the unit further. I truly hope and pray that it does not collapse. ~ bug |

That is why the explosion of reactor 3 was so disconcerting. The reactor was not designed for MOX fuel. It is hotter, creates greater pressures in the vessel, causes metal fatigue and requires more time to cool. Not to mention the additional radioisotopes. The SFPs were designed to hold around 400 spent fuel assemblies. It has become common practice in all nuclear facilities to add racks to the ponds which allows them to store more assemblies. 1500 or more, as is the case in SFP 4. It takes 5 years for spent fuel from a reactor to cool enough to be transferred to dry storage casks which are then stored on site indefinitely, because there is no where else to put them. This is the situation everywhere. These nuclear facilities are insanely dangerous to all of us. Although the MOX supposedly was not used in any of the other reactors, the threat of plutonium contamination is still a huge factor. During fission, plutonium is created. All of the SFPs in the world have plutonium in them. The fact that these SFPs at Fuku are exposed to the environment is very, very bad. Nuclear technology is great when everything goes right... And a nightmare when it doesn't. We are currently in the middle of a really bad nightmare and no one knows when or if it will end. You can believe the shills who say it is all blown out of proportion and there is no danger... their fear causes them to project denial. Or, you can believe the scientific facts. I'd rather believe the science. ~ bug |

I knew our time was short due all the radioactive material that has been prodeuced, practically never goes away and we have no long term confinement for it but now well maybe it really is very short. We could hold it off for a while if the japanese can get their act together but if not... Oh boy :( this is actually way worse than Chernobyl. "Inheritor of a dying world, long hast though dwelt in darkness..." Ya, biblical proportions disaster. Frater LVX! |
