THE VERMONT INDEPENDENCE CONVENTION
An Impossible Dream or a Vision of the Future?

State House
Montpelier, Vermont

October 28, 2005

James Howard Kunstler, author of The Long Emergency, will be the keynote speaker at The Vermont Convention on Independence to be held in the House Chamber of the State House in Montpelier on Friday October 28th. Sponsored by the Second Vermont Republic, the convention, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m., is open to the public and free of charge.

This historic event will be the first statewide convention on secession in the United States since North Carolina voted to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861.

Other speakers will include Professor Frank Bryan, UVM; Kirkpatrick Sale, author of Human Scale, J. Kevin Graffagnino, Executive Director, Vermont Historical Society; Professor Eric Davis, Middlebury College; Shay Totten, editor, Vermont Guardian; Antoine Robitaille, journalist Le Devoir (Quebec City); G. Roderick Lawrence, CEO, Stevenson Kellogg(Canada); (Rev.) Ben T. Matchstick; and General Ethan Allen (aka Jim Hogue). General Allen is expected to travel by horse to the State House.

The objectives of the convention are twofold. First, to raise the level of awareness of Vermonters of the feasibility of independence as a viable alternative to a nation which has lost its moral authority and is unsustainable. Second, to provide an example and a process for other states and nations which may be seriously considering separatism, secession, independence, and similar devolutionary strategies.

The Second Vermont Republic is a peaceful, democratic, grassroots,
libertarian populist movement committed to the return of Vermont to its status as an independent republic as it once was between 1777 and 1791.

Just as long as they realize what they stand to lose by seceding.....Federal funding, for starters. Even if seceding means they pay less Federal taxes, the state taxes are going to have to go up in order to maintain the status quo in VT.

I lived in Alaska for 6 years and always there was talk of secession. Fine if you live in a natural resource rich environment, not fine if you donīt.

Hope Vermonters are making an INFORMED decision based on a little more than whether or not the current government is unsustainable. The question in my mind would be "Can we sustain ourselves if we divorce the Federal government?"

I started a thread which applies to this issue:

now what?

6:27 pm EDT Is the Constitution the glue which holds the union together?

If the Constitution guaranteed unity among the states, will the dissolving of the constitution lead to the disunity of the states?

How can the globalists dispose of the constitution without also destroying the unity of the United States of America?

Does any state have an obligation to maintain a false unity based on nothing more than intimidation?

Was the constitution a guarantee of fair government?
Does the undermining of the Constitution give the states a right to break the contract?

I think someone needs to be asking these questions. The globalists better get some answers ready, because their little global plan may just fall over this issue.

I wonder if theyīll ask for their share of the 100 trillion dollars in assets that US, INC. has stolen from the People as shown in the Comprehensice Annual Financial Reports?

After paying off the national debt of 7 trillion dollars or whatever it is these days, there would still be a few hundred billion for Vermontīs share. Thatīs a pretty solid foundation to start a state on.

Under the constitution, the People can do anything that they want when the "government" has failed to do what it is supposed to do, which is to act as a government, not as a revenue sharing and enhancing corporation.

those in the federal govt. who betrayed the constitution only have themselves to blame for the states desire to secede

And those in the US that allowed the Federal government to get involved in the states affairs have themselves to blame too.

California is well suited for this notion, it is the worldīs 5th economy and can afford to leave the USA.

Vermont only plants a seed of idea which by the results of these conventions will spread the idea as dandelion seeds disperse into the winds.

States will unmerge, not for the same reasons, but for similar ideals. One state must make it clear to the others that there are alternative methods available.

Vermont is not a "great loss" to the Federal Empire of the United States, it is a fertile ground for germination of the idea, but least likely to actually do this thing. The "threat" is not apparent in the near term, only does it become clear when its affect on other States takes place.

95,

United States History demonstrates that states living the union are apart to find themselves facing a war.

The Constitution although a nice contract between human government constructs is rarely to be seen as a Law within itself that insures that its Truths are maintained.

the supreme court is supposed to uphold the constitution
if they fail to do that
then something is wrong
