Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1384680 Iran says its atomic program is for peaceful purposes. not being to peaceful right now :( They are being threatened militarily and there oil industry is being attacked, they aren't exactly going to back into a little corner and cry about it. please explain. i know the US can be the aggressor at most times. but i think they have played their cards close this time. it was iran who spied on the stennis according to iran. as far as being in the strait, well it is international waters and the US navy does have a base in bahrain. now i know that if iran got that close to the US we would have a fit. but there are plenty of reasons for the US to be in the strait. iran would only be close to the US for military posturing. the sanctions from the US against irans bank couldnt worry them because the POTUS backed down big time. signed it to take affect 6 months from now at the admins discretion according to a study on how it would effect the oil trade. so he basically balked after talking tough for so long. but here is the problem. they may have check mated themselves or the US. by saying the stennis can not return to the strait is saying that it cant return to its home base. so now even if it was in a rotation to return to the states what does the US do? if they dont go back they appear soft. if they do then iran has to act or they appear soft. this choice was made by iran, not the US. iran has thrown out a lot of threats if you believe their state news agency. the only thing that the US has said is military action is not off the table. It would just be the Stennis that Iran told would not be allowed to re-enter, but all US Navy vessels that came through the strait. But no, Iran probably doesn't have the right to dictate who goes in or out of the Gulfs within that area. I'm no so sure how serious Iran actually is when they give stern warnings, whether they follow up on their word, is something i or anyone else other than the Iranian govt would know. As for the sanctions, it's not just the US to be implementing them, it's majority of EU countries that will jump on the bandwagon, like Sarkozy has just announced within the past few hours. Putting aside how long these sanctions would take to come into effect, i believe Iran is more concerned about the principle of the matter. These will be the most aggressive (and i use that term lightly) sanctions placed on Iranian industry so far. It's economic warfare, trying to force ones hand and submit. I'm not sure how Iran will bode with these sanctions placed on them, im no economist, but im sure it'll be a pain in the side, cause that is a lot of money not coming in. If i was in Irans position, i would be shaking my fist and giving the middle finger to the US from afar as well. good points. i dont disagree with them. to be honest the US gets a lot of hate but the common person here doesnt want the government messing with iran any more than iran does. this last threat does worry me a little. i dont know if i still have any friends in the 5th fleet but i did at one point while i served (not navy btw). but that is a pretty hard line threat from iran. one of the 2 will have to follow through or appear to the world as weak. All morons hate it when you call them a moron. People always think something's all true. It's funny.
