I am a hospital Nurse. I was forced to have a flu shot. Now I'm sick. Hospital managers are murderers anyway.

I am an RN at a large well respected hospital in the NE United States. Our hospital began informing the Nursing staff back in Septmember or so that we MUST have flu shots or we will be suspended without pay and not allowed to work. They gave us a date by which we needed to have it.

None of us wanted to have the damn thing. People who have had it have said that they get sick afterward. One of our colleagues had it last year and became completely paralyzed. Turns out he had somekind of undiagnosed early stage and asymptomatic autoimmune disorder that really kicks off and excarbates with the flu shot. He is 31 and currently being cared for and rehabed in a Nursing Home/Skilled nursing facility.

The nurses on my floor have been trying to avoid this damn shot for a few months now. Well my boss and some suits fucking cornered me yesterday morning at the end of my shift. They demanded to know why I hadn't had the shot yet. They then informed me that if I refused it I would not be allowed to come back to work for my next shifts.

My husband has just been laid off and we have three kids and a mortgage so my job is all we have. None of the local hospitals are hiring Nurses and new nurses cannot find work. If I get fired it is very likely that we would lose the house.

They cornered me right there and gave me the shot. I really didn't have it in me to run but I wish I would have. My whole arm is now swollen and numb and has been ever since the shot. I am fatigued and vomiting ever since. Can't go to the doctor because I am scheduled to do 14 hour night shifts over the next three days. Can't call off sick because the staffing office is short staffing our floor so badly that the patients are already really at risk of negligence and serious events just because of the poor nurse to patient ratios. If I call of sick I won't be replaced.

All over the hospital there are posters of smiling Nurses with the slogan "I am getting my flu shot to protect my patients. I do this because I care". There are other posters that basically tells patients that flu happens because of selfish nurses and doctors. It's pretty silly considering that there are many strains of flu virus and the shot only protects from one kind.

On one hand they are telling the public if the selfish nurses don't have flu it puts patient lives at risk. On the other hand they are short staffing the floors,and pocketing the money that should be used to hire additional RNs, thus killing patients.

If your nurse has more than 4 patients in her care your risk of death increases by something like 21% for each additional patient she has over the number 4. My floor has one nurse to 10 patients per shift. This floor is renal, acute medicine, telemetry, cardiac, surgical and elderly patients.

Nurse gets held accountable for any negligence or other serious events that occur even though she cannot control how many patients she is has to take responsibility for (med errors, deaths, failure to rescue). I don't want to call of sick tonight and leave the nurse I am supposed to work with short staffed and forced to care for 16+ patients. She could lose her license to practice if something goes wrong.

I'm telling you: these hospital administrators with all their lying and propaganda and greed should be effing shot.

And you know what? My husband used to get us relocated with his old job all the time. I have worked overeas (UK, Northern IRELAND)as an RN. The hospital managers there are just as bad and yet they are supposed have a completely different health care system from what we have in the US. Those health care managers also lie, cut nurses and doctors off from the resources that they need, short staff clinical areas and sit back and laugh while health care professionals take all the blame, put all kinds of misinformation and propaganda out there........ they may have government run health care over there....but all the shots are called by non medical non nursing business people.

Anyway, going back to my flu shot. I am sick, my left arm is fucked and I really don't know what to do from here.

I believing in asking for the TRIED AND TRUE IMMUNIZATIONS against polio, tetanus, measles etc.

I dont agree being a guinea pig for new stuff. And sadly, its probaly about corporate competition and money

Spoke to the day shift charge nurse. There is no staff. Staffing office basically told her to fuck off when she asked for help. She said that our floor had many discharges earlier in the day and is getting slammed with admissions who are extremely critically ill and complicated. And that is in addition to the extremely ill and complicated patients we already have. The admissions will continue overnight as well. The charge nurse tried to get the floor closed to additional admissions so that we could deal with the patients we already have but management said no way. It costs them $$$ if they don't fill up with as many patients as they can and as few Nurses as possible.

She said that we have been "reminded" that we are NOT allowed to tell the patients and families how short staffed we are. We have also been warned that we had just better suck it up when they get abusive and demanding. I know these patients and families do not understand the situation at all. She said night shift is going to get absolutely slammed with admits despite only having a couple of Nurses and a floor full of very sick patients.

I think I'm going to have to go in. Whether or not you agree with what I have posted here or not please say a little prayer for my patients and I tonight. It's going to be absolute hell up there. It usually is. We really need some positive energy/vibes/whatever you believe in. I think it is the total responsibility yet complete lack of control that is getting to me.

Not sure, I think my Mother mentioned Lymphoenia?? or something.. she's got too many white blood cells in her lymph nodes/glands? & blood. My Dad has a tissue sample taken to be examined, so we should find out within the month. When I went to see them in hosptial, there wasn't a single bloody nurse to be seen, & the ones that did appear were aloof, un-friendly & rude. I asked 'is it ok, if just move his phone round onto the table?' in a polite voice. "You can do whatever .. you.. like!" was the answer in an arrogant nasty tone. London nurses are horrible!!! Northern English/Welsh & Scottish nurses are great! very helpful..

We're dealing with my father in law in hospital now....ultimately because of a flu shot....so I have some idea of what you're going through. It affected his eyes and he might go blind. He's having other problems, but that's perhaps the worst. It all started with the flu shot, which is just amazing that they can get away with this shit. Between that, and the medications they keep trying out on him like a guinea pig, and they all have side effects and interactions. Thank God the pharmacy warned us one time when the doctors gave him some combination that could have killed him!

I am so sorry for what you're going through. One parent is bad enough but with both you must be on the run constantly, physically and emotionally. Do try to take some little piece of time and care for yourself so you don't get too run down. Easy to say, hard to do, but it's important. You have to help yourself first so you can be strong for others.
