Could anyone in North America confirm if they see this or not? My wife and I noticed it at about 9:25pm CDT. Quoting: Grimsun Sirius is located just below Orion, and is visible in the southern sky right now. It looks CRAZY... I realize this is an atmospheric disturbance but none of the other stars are having this effect that I can tell. Yes earlier tonight especially in san diego |

Thug Cat Top Hat User ID: 7313537 United States 01/06/2012 09:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Although the dust and dirt does change the color of things, making them typically appear redder, the cause of the twinkling and color flashing is due to the light from the star passing through layers and blobs of Earth atmosphere with different light bending properties. As the light passes through this air it can be shifted by a small amount 'off-axis' if you like, and this causes a momentary change in the amount of light reaching your eye. The star appears to twinkle. The bending can also be accompanied by the light being spread out into its component spectral colors and as this spectrum can also shift to the side, your eye picks the effect up as a flash of color. Dust and dirt in the atmosphere isn't directly related to seeing but rather the clarity of the atmosphere, as described by the sky's "transparency". The question SHOULD NOT be "why is Sirius twinkling so much?" It's not acting any differently than any other time. The question should be, "what's different about our atmosphere than before?" Now that's the million dollar question. 1. Cosmic Space Bubbles 2. The Heliosphere 3. The Sun Cycles 4. Global Warming (not by human activity but by natural ebbs and flows. Grimsun (OP) User ID: 4986601 United States 01/06/2012 02:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sirius twinkles because it is so low to the horizon. The light from it has to travel through a lot more atmosphere which is full of dust and dirt. This is what gives it its colors. On nights when you see it as white, This is a good indication of good "seeing" conditions. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2518219 The color may be off a bit sometimes but I can see a whit disk with a 10x binoculars. Beatlejuice is red. Venus is not in the South right now but I have seen it tonight. It's as bright as the Moon! No, this is definitely Sirius. Also, planets don't flicker Planets do flicker. The flickering is caused by variations and movements in the atmosphere. It is not caused by what they are made of. That being said, Sirius IS bright as shit and flickering madly. So are Venus and Jupiter. Maybe I'm getting older and noticing more, but Venus and Jupiter especially seem soooo much brighter than I can remember. |

Awesome explanation! I especially appreciate that after you've given your explanation, you also helped to raise the real question, my bet would be on the massive methane release into low altitudes, causing the light to appear to twinkle and bend. Thank you! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 6982701 Canada 01/06/2012 09:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As much as the guy bothers me some times, I can't help thinking about Apollo's comments that he "knows" government officials who say the atmosphere is thinning. Seeing threads like this add to the worries I have when the weather in Southern Ontario is +0 almost everyday this winter, with temperatures going up to 5 this weekend. Extremely abnormal and the fact people seem to not question it worries me even more. "Oh what beautiful weather." This is Ontario, Canada, and this is the freezing cold part of the year, you should know that. |
