Breaking - Explosion reported at North Korean nuke facility

SEOUL (Dow Jones)--The South Korean won fell to its lowest level in more than two weeks against the U.S. dollar Friday as unconfirmed market rumors about an explosion in North Korea hit sentiment toward the local currency, which was already under mild selling pressure amid euro-zone debt woes.

Both the local stock index and the won briefly tumbled shortly after 0500 GMT, while traders and analysts said there were rumours that there was a massive explosion at a nuclear facility in North Korea.

Market participants soon dismissed the chatter as it was unclear where the rumour originated, though the won's recovery was limited due to weakness in the euro and other Asian currencies. The dollar moved between KRW1,154.00 and KRW1,163.00 during the session.

An official with the South Korea's unification ministry said it hasn't detected any special movements relating to the rumor, but said it was looking into it.

That's somewhat different to the previous statement which said the rumour was "Groundless".

South Korean authorities were quick to dismiss the rumours that a light-water reactor had exploded at the Yongbyon facility in the North, releasing radioactive material.

No increased radiation was detected by South Korean sensors, and no tremors in the area were picked up by geological monitoring stations.

Nothing is on the north Korean tv. Just standard soap operas. if something like this happened you think they would say/blame someone.
