Whale - Dolphin Strandings, Earthquake & Radiation Connection ..

Interesting stats Rainman. What really interests me is the high numbers of whales that strand here around New Zealand. I dont think we have as many earthquakes as other areas of the world and yet do have all these strandings as your data has pointed out. Do you have any other theories apart from earthquakes?

90 whales stranded on beach

A pod of 90 pilot whales beached themselves at the top of New Zealand's South island Monday in the same area where seven whales died in a mass stranding earlier this month, officials said.

Whale and dolphin group reports big increase in strandings on coastline (Ireland)

Tuesday, January 3, 2012. THE Irish Whale and Dolphin Group has said that the past year has seen a big increase in strandings of whales and dolphins compared to previous years.

A total of 160 stranding and 1,565 sighting reports were logged during 2011, according to group co-ordinator Dr Simon Berrow.

This is compares to 92 strandings in 2010, Dr Berrow said.

Bad weather hampered sightings, but the total was the third highest since the group set up its recording scheme in 1991 – also the year when Ireland’s whale and dolphin sanctuary was declared by former taoiseach Charles Haughey.

The 2011 statistics included a very high peak of common dolphin strandings during February and a high number of porpoise strandings during the winter.

On average more than 300 dolphins and whales strand on New Zealand beaches each year.

Rapid changes in water pressure created by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or seismic testing may damage the sinuses and middle ears of whales, preventing them from diving and feeding. This may then lead to illness and navigational error causing them to strand.

How does this sound,
With the sun acting up, maybe some extreme solar radiation is breaking through Earths weakened magnetic field and hitting the worlds oceans, causing the whales, dolphins and other sea life to flea the areas that have been hit?

It's interesting theory and unfortunately reality, thank you for your option and replay ..

Solar radiation can make serious consequences on any life form ..

Something about Earth weakened magnetic field ..

Recent palaeomagnetic studies suggest that excursions of the geomagnetic field, during which the intensity drops suddenly by a factor of 5 to 10 and the local direction changes dramatically, are more common than previously expected. The `normal' state of the geomagnetic field, dominated by an axial dipole, seems to be interrupted every 30 to 100 kyr; it may not therefore be as stable as we thought.

Recent studies suggest that the Earth's magnetic field has fallen dramatically in magnitude and changed direction repeatedly since the last reversal 700 kyr ago (Langereis et al. 1997; Lund et al. 1998). These important results paint a rather different picture of the long-term behaviour of the field from the conventional one of a steady dipole reversing at random intervals: instead, the field appears to spend up to 20 per cent of its time in a weak, non-dipole state (Lund et al. 1998). One of us (Gubbins 1999) has suggested that this is evidence of a rapid natural timescale (500 yr) in the outer core, and that the magnetic field is usually prevented from reversing completely by the longer diffusion time of the inner core (2-5 kyr). This raises a number of important but difficult questions for geodynamo theory. How can the geomagnetic field change so rapidly and dramatically? Can slight variations of the geomagnetic field affect the dynamics of core convection significantly? If so, is the geodynamo process intrinsically unstable?


The north magnetic dip pole velocity has more than doubled in the last 30 years. This observation, together with the decrease in the Earth’s magnetic dipole intensity over the last century has raised the concern of a possible approaching polarity reversal. We show that this rapid variation is in fact to be expected, and will not affect the dipolar field as a whole, but only the north magnetic pole. We demonstrate how this rapid displacement of the north magnetic pole is made possible by the horizontal field morphology. This rapid variation of north magnetic pole position does not imply any important modification of the core processes associated with field generation. The north magnetic pole position being very sensitive to small as well as rapid variations of the field, we show that it can very effectively be used as a passive tracer (or indicator) of field variations. Indeed, its velocity over the last century very accurately indicates the geomagnetic impulses (or jerks) that were so far observed only in observatory data.

The Gothenburg "Flip"

In the case of the Gothenburg "flip," which Hancock (1995) misidentified as a "magnetic reversal, FOG again provided a poorly researched analysis. The still unproved Gothenburg "flip," if real, was a rapid and brief change of magnetic field that occurred about 12,350 BP. It was not a real magnetic reversal. The last true magnetic reversal occurred 730,000 years in the change from the reverse polarity of the Matuyama Magnetic Epoch to the normal polarity of the Brunhes Magnetic Epoch. The Gothenburg "flip," as proposed by Morner (1971) and reported by Anonymous (1972), is more properly called a "magnetic excursion" because the Earth magnetic field did not reverse itself permanently but briefly changed without complete reversal over the period of a few years. For this event to represent Earth crustal displacement, the Earth's crust at about 12,350 BP would have to shift 180 degrees one direction and shift another 180 degrees back to its exact original position within the space of a few years. The timing of the Gothenburg "flip" fails to match any proposed Earth shift by either Hapgood (1970) or Flem-Ath (1997) in either timing or amount of predicted shift. Also, the validity of the Gothenburg excursion has been challenged by a number of studies which repeated have failed to detect its presence in a number of paleomagnetic records that cover 12,350 BP. At this time there is considerable question that the Gothenburg excursion even occurred and, in fact, the result of soft sediment deformation (Jacob 1994:103-107).

260 Dead Dolphins Scattered on Shoreline of Peru, Just Days After Mysterious U.S. Incident

Not far from the cape, the dolphins have been at it for over a week. We need to pay more attention to wildlife and it's response to things. I believe we are in for something huge....your thoughts?

I figure it's one of two things, or maybe both.

1) The poles are changing confusing the animals which navigate by the earth's magnetic field

2) Fukushima fallout. There have been a recent rash of 'unidentified viruses' striking animals around the world, including seals in Alaska and lamb in the UK.

My dog has developed an insane itch in the last two months or so. Seems only to affect the part of her body that would come into contact with rain and snow, ie: belly and legs. My second suspicion (after ruling out fleas of course) was radioactive rain/snow. Vet said it's a bacterial infection, beyond me how she knows considering she barely looked at it and didn't take a culture. My dog is on her third week of antibiotics with minimal relief. Has anyone else experienced this?

In either case, the prognosis is not good. The times they are a changing, friends.

Hey Rainman I just came on to get the details of this weeks mega-pod dolphin sighting off the coast of California and came across your post. I will be reading it later tonight. Looks like a good read. :) :)

The dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico are in the midst of a massive die-off. The reasons why remain a complicated and mysterious mix of oil, bacteria and the unknown.

Normally an average of 74 dolphins are stranded on the northern shore of the Gulf of Mexico each year, especially during the spring birthing season. But between February 2010 and April 1, 2012, 714 dolphins and other cetaceans have been reported as washed up on the coast from the Louisiana/Texas border through Franklin County, Fla.

Peru investigates deaths of hundreds of dolphins

LIMA, Peru — Scientists and Peruvian officials are investigating a mass die-off of hundreds of dolphins along the South American country's coast.

We have had a few whales stranding in the last week and I am picking a large earthquake is on it's way within the month. I see there was one in Peru a days or so ago and a few here in NZ as well. I did this a few days ago....

In December 2006, rescuers managed to save the majority of 140 pilot whales stranded at Puponga Bay. But just two weeks later, on New Year's Day 2007, 50 whales died after beaching at Farewell Spit.

On 12 January 2007 an earthquake East of the Kuril Islands measured 8.1.
On 21 January 2007 an earthquake in Molucca Sea measured 7.5.

In December 2009, more than 120 whales died in two separate beachings at Farewell Spit and Colville Bay, north of Coromandel.

As you can see roughly a month after the strandings there have been some very big quakes.
