Well taken points. However, if the atmosphere is being thinned there are simple ways to confirm it. A thinner atmosphere, whether less dense or not as thick from ground to top, will result in a lower barometric pressure at the surface. A simple barometer or aircraft altimeter would prove or disprove this quickly.
