In his most recent video, Arnie Gundersen calmly, but inaccurately, explains why people should remain fearful of extremely low levels of radiation and radioactive materials. He sounds so knowledgeable and is so often quoted by people who are adamantly opposed to the use of nuclear energy that it is worth a little time to point out the flaws in his logic, math and knowledge level and to demonstrate why his overall conclusions are thus completely wrong.

This interview seems to me to be faked, because it is not normal, when a journalist laugh, when something is really bad, a journalist could have some feelings....but that woman is laughing sometimes...so, I must think, that she is a complice!

Re: Arnie Gunderson With An Update On The Fukushima Disaster

It only takes one cosmic ray, X-ray, Alpha, Beta, Gamma ray or Neutron striking a strand of your DNA to start cancer growing in your body.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 5806312

And for this very reason, all humans contract cancer many times per day. Fortunately the vast majority of cancers either self-destruct (as our cells are DNA-coded to do under such circumstances) or are destroyed by the immune system.

If you're under the misapprehension that "there's no safe level of radioation", I formally invite you to A) Find somewhere in the universe totally devoid of natural radioation, and B) Find some way of avoiding the radiation generated, again naturally, by your own body.

I absolutely agree that our immune system protects us from radiation. What needs to be mentioned here is that much of the sickness associated with radiation poisoning is caused by the response of our immune system to it.
Measuring for radiation in the environment is haphazard using even the most elaborate procedures.
The effects radiation poisoning have been well documented. Deciphering whether the symptoms now being experienced by the Japanese as well as by many here on the west coast is the result of radiation and not some other environmental influence can be accurately assessed through prospective and retrospective cohort studies.

Wow, what a way to rationalize this situation. However, please note your reference to "natural radiation". this is not natural radiation we speak of, and to dismiss it as no more harmful than natural radiation is asinine. but, if it makes you feel better....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6289134

Well... it does make me feel better. Broadly speaking, the deleterious effects of any radioactive substance depend on the energy of the radiation emitted and the route of exposure. For this reason, alpha emitters are usually quite harmless unless inhaled or otherwise ingested.

Further, the damage a cosmic ray will do to you far exceeds that of any natural or artificial radioactive decay taking place on earth (the highest-energy cosmic rays carry an energy equivalent to a baseball ravelling at 100kph, an travel so fast that due to time dilation, the experience of traversing the universe only lasts a few seconds in their frame of reference - cool huh?)

So, the two most important factors are scale of exposure and method of exposure - I don't think our DNA is very good at distinguishing between man-made radiation and that occurring naturally, do you?

So why does it make me feel better? Because I lived in an area of high fallout subsequent to the Chernobyl disaster, and I can assure you that I'm absolutely fine - certainly not having kittens because good information or data was misinterpreted on GLP.

interesting, but the arguments presented by this article do not support the claim that gunderson is "spreading unwarranted fear". The fear is still very, very warranted, imho. Chernobyl on sedatives - ha - sure, believe that if you would like. It doesnt matter, it will prove itself soon. Hell, I hope I am wrong.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6289134

They "Japan" had a series of quakes "not long ago" that are supposedly the worst fear. That the nuclear waste "core" #2 if I am not mistaken has hit the water table and caused severe underground explosions. If that is true, then things are really getting FUBAR over there and will continue to get worse here as well.

I would have to say that moderate to severe worrying about this is warranted.

Hard to tell the timeframe of this interview, but I think this was quite a while back - like maybe in April or May. WAY OLD STUFF at this point.

But Gundersen has had a whole SERIES of very understandable videos on Fukushima. Well worth watching, and you'll learn a LOT.

They're on the same site as the audio link, or here:

Exactly. Our immune systems have evolved over a billion (yes!) years to cope with pretty much anything thrown at them. One of the more bizarre reactions in recent medicine is the trend towards muting or eliminating the symptoms associated with any given condition. Should we really reach for the paracetamol when we feel a little 'bothered' by the slightly high temperature we're running when subject to a cold?

While the spectrum of damage associated with radiation poisoning is very, very wide, the body is doing its best to mitigate the problem up to the point where said system is itself destroyed. In certain cases it's futile; in others it goes absolutely unnoticed (as with the US residents in high-radiation states).

I'm not advocating, in any absolute sense, any given approach to radiation exposure in its severe and acute sense - simply because that depends entirely on factors associated inextricably with the manner of exposure. However, the levels of exposure that are causing 'panic' on GLP are /well within/ those, if you will, considered 'normal' for any immune system or any healthy person.

The BBC link I posted earlier describes it quite well by means of the Banana Equivalent Dose: Spending two weeks in Fukushima Prefecture immediately after the disaster gained one and equivalent exposure of flying from London to New York and back, give or take.

I'll reiterate this again, both for the benefit of and as ammunition for the paranoiacs around these parts:

I lived in an area subject to abnormally high fallout from Chernobyl, given its location. It was also one of those areas where you don't have much choice as to whether you consume foodstuffs, breathe dust and drink water contaminated by the disaster. Coincidentally, I was recently subjected to a full medical screening with the intent to eliminate cancer as a cause for an unrelated medical condition following a (botched, I imagine) 'query nature' biopsy of a perfectly harmless cyst. In that process, they thoroughly, and coincidentally, imaged my thyroid: Perfectly normal.

Further to all of that, I'll reiterate that nobody else in the area in which I lived has suffered an 'abnormal' cancer - and the radiation levels we're talking about here are many orders of magnitude greater than those around Fukushima.

Let's not forget, folks, the fundamental difference between Chernobyl and Fukushima:

In one, a reactor core exploded, spread its innards all over the local environment and subsequently caught fire; spreading radioactive materials widely in aerosol form.

In the other, four reactor buildings were damaged by hydrogen explosions external to the core "gubbins," and their cores were (relatively) slow-lead damaged before any explosions occurred.

To ram it RIIIIGHT home:

Chernobyl: "Bits of Uranium all over the place and it's still on fire!"

Fukushima: "It's leaking, and damaged, and there are four of them - but the fuel is still all inside and the cores are not on fire."

Funny, I have seen studies showing that many thousands of people have died directly/indirectly as a result of Chernobyl? In addition to the fact that the children of Chernobyl were born mutated? (and subsequently kept alive by scientists for research)Speaking of - Do you have children born of you after the disaster?

I am not sure what you are advocating? Are you telling people there is nothing to worry about? That NOTHING is going to happen to the plants/animal/fungi life on this planet because of the leak(ing) radiation? I certainly hope that is the case - but my education, logic, and intuition tell me you are very wrong. I am not trying to fear monger, but I can not deny that this situation is quite likely extremely detrimental to our world.

scariest thing is the seemingly newest media blackout.

nothing about their leaky water "cleaning" system, nothing about the burning of iradiated sludge and plants and debrise, nothing about the tons of water in the basesments and certainly nothing about the melted cores and fuel pools...

obviously everything is honky-dory.

tepco have it all under control....

The million dollar questions are:

1) Exactly where is the fuel located?
2) What shape is it in?
3) Where do we go from here?

These are 3 questions that have yet to be answered. I cannot believe guesstimates are still on the table. Simulations have been run without proper data to get an accurate analysis. I fear the unknown much more than the known. Just my 2 cents.

This interview is from November 2011... not exactly breaking news. (He states in interview that the accident happened 8 months ago (happened in March), putting this interview in November).

Regardless, Japan in still screwed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3919151

Actually, the whole northern hemisphere is screwed. There was massive particulate release from the Explosions at Fukushima. Radioactive Plutonium and Uranium and Cesium and Strontium, and Iodine have been found all across the United States, Europe, Asia and even northern Africa. There are hundreds of square miles of Alaska that should be exclusion zones but for the fact that almost nobody lives in the highly contaminated areas. The United States government has decided to ignore alerting anybody about the contamination. It is estimated that 12,000 people will die, but they are just aboriginal people (Eskimos) who want to live off of the land. The wild life is highly radioactive, just like wild boars in Europe after Chernobyl.

Do not eat any meat or fish products from Alaska.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1435822

There are white people too where the Eskimos live just not many of us. I lived in the SW part of the state until this past fall, we were right in the path of the jet stream. Now we are having odd health problems that seem only to get worse. Yet it's very difficult to find any information regarding radiation in AK.

Re: Arnie Gunderson With An Update On The Fukushima Disaster
Oh please cmon people, use your brains for crying out loud!

Chernobyl is located in a relatively unpopulated area in the middle of nowhere and still managed to "infect" many other european countries, for decades to come yet!

Fukushima is basicly in the middle of a country (yes i know on the coast) of 135 million people. ( roughly I dont know the actual pop figure)

And being located directly on the coast is rapidly and constantly polluting the fucking ocean at large.
All the oceans in the world are joined togeather. By november 2013 it will be very unwise to consume ANY fish out of the pacific. Full stop. Period.

We now know through independent reports that many police and civilians are sick and indeed dying. There is still no word as to the fate of the fukushima fifty and around 800 workers at fukushima are now officially classified as missing.

There are growing reports of people losing their hair and fingernails/toenails. Plus animal and plant mutations.

Now they have FINALLY announced "DAIINI" as having extreme problems, with the number 4 "spent" fuel pool said to be now boiling, which of course is disastrous and says that in time, not long from right now, unless extreme measures are taken, will Fucking melt down. Arnie Gunderson said quite clearly that this situation is totally beyond science and mankinds ability to handle, or in his exact words "leve Japan" !!!!!!!!!

The situation in Japan is dire, as I have been trying to reach out and tell people from the start.

But of course nobody wants their comfortable lives threatend so they tend to dismiss out of hand that anything is going on.

To the people out there who think that this is "fearmongering" OPEN YOUR FUCKING EYES.

Stop making sheep noises and trying to sound educated when you are clearly not.

We are well aware of the effects of a single meltdown, so we can easily extrapolate what the effects of six are. Yes thats right SIX. what do you think is going to happen to five and six when the spent fuel pool at four melts down?

We simply dont have the science at hand to even begin to imagine what the consequences of #4 sfp melting down. The vast and massive amounts of fuel contained therein spells a massive and extremely dangerous situation. Much more so than what has been released so far!!!

Remembering that we are talking trillions of bequerals (spelling) per HOUR since march LAST YEAR. And of course this will continue for the foreseeable future ( that really does mean forever) With #4 melting down and with the radiation release preventing anyone conducting any kind of maintainence at 5+6 the disaster is complete.

We know what is happening right now (and all the way since march) to the Pasific ocean, we know what the effects will be.

We know that within twelve months the hospitals in Japan will be overun. I am sure that they will begin to send patients overseas for treatment because of this.

We know that babies have to have being born deformed, allready, no matter how quiet the coverup this is certain, ask any person involved in the medical industry and listen carefully.

We know the effects of "low" level radiation, and the effects of continued exposure on plants animals children etc this really is stuff of nightmares come true.
Its called reality and we have to deal with it.
As adults, as humans. As intelligent beings.

There is no long term gain in "pretending" to ourselves that this ^ is not happening.

"Evil prospers when good men do nothing" is a good quote to use here. People both in the nuclear energy industry can do (and will) all that they can to play down. "Shills" on the net will do their part too.

The rest of us will continue to cry out to the masses, hoping against hope itself that they will listen.

We know that they wont until their babies are born with no legs, we know that they wont until the food that they eat starts to make them sick, we know that they just wont fucking listen as long as the government tells them that everythings "OK" and please just keep on smiling!

For the sake of humanity itself please open up the tired eyes.

I must give you the clap clappa

That is the most intelligent analysis I've read, lately.

The effects are insidious... and, in the case of all who are alive today, permanent.

Sorry it took so long to 5* and pin but it goes for an hour. Had to listen to it all , scary is right .
Japan is in serious shit [ so is a lot of the world ] . Fukushima produces 50 % of Japans rice and they won't be able to plant it for 600 years , hope 50 % of population [ 60 million plus ] don't get hungry .

Fuku #3 actually blew out it's contents I think. That was a nuclear explosion along with the hydrogen. Watch the video of #3 blowing up, it's a clear mushroom cloud.. Plus all the 'spent' fuel in the SFPs.

There is Zero-Evidence of a Nuclear Explosion,
the so called "Mushroom-Cloud" is no evidence
for a Nuclear Explosion, with a Explosion of the Core
in Nr. 3 we would not see People walking around there/
or MOX is more harmless than we know!

There is also no Media Black Out,
the Japanese Media is full of Reports every day,
in the TV as well as the Newspapers!

Unfortunately , the media CANNOT tell the full travesty that is on going , as they are being kept in the dark about the severity of this disaster. The Japanese government/Tepco have to admit the scale of the problem so as other countries can maybe help with containment and decontamination .

Also , BELIEVE NOTHING OF WHAT YOU HEAR AND ONLY HALF OF WHAT YOU READ !!!
