Desktop or Laptops?
What do most of you guys use? I just sold my desktop and bought a used laptop. Having a hard time getting used to typing on it.

Re: Desktop or Laptops?
That is a common pitfall. I use my notebook only for presentations, field work, e-book reader and as my 21st century typewritter.

My main system is still my desktop because maintenance/expansion is easier and cheaper.
I am what I read.

We ended up having to disable the mouse because when I typed I kept hitting it accidentally. Using my scroll mouse now. Much better.

Its a sony vaio. I like it, just going to take some getting used to.

Re: Desktop or Laptops?
It all comes down to your needs. Desktops are best for games and much mouse use. Laptops are better for writing/documents.

Where Desktops are not portable, laptops allow one to travel.

Both are now comparable for memory and power, and the prices are beginning to balance out. In one more decade the issues with laptops such as mouse problems, inability to upgrade will vanish making lap tops the number one seller.

New technologies coming out such as flexible, rollable monitors that are paper thin, along with new nano-chip technologies that use nano-sized circuitry increasing the power and performance while reducing the weight and size of the boards, high definition highly compact mini-disks that hold more bytes of data than the CD-Rom of today, all of these will factor into better lap-top technology.

I would suggest holding off for another 10 years on going lap-top unless you are on the go all the time.

Keep in eye on the Cell phone technologies, PDA/IPod/Cell phone tech are merging rapidly. It may very well be that in 10 years time the laptop, cell phone, IPod, PDA, etc will all merge into one portable unit that will be highly versatile and easy to use.

Re: Desktop or Laptops?
Wait 10 years before going to a laptop??? LOL!!!! Are you crazy!!!! In 10 YEARS you´d probably blow through at least 2 laptops. If you want one get it, use the hell out of it and get another... LOL wait 10 years.... So are you using a X486sx with a 540MB Hard Drive, 8MB RAM, 28.8 Modem and thinking about plunking down $200 for 4X CD-ROM running Windows 3.1 and thinking about upgrading it to Windows 95 or are you thinking about upgrading to a: Pentium 90 with a 700MB Hard Drive, 16MB Ram, 56K Modem and an 8X CD Burner? LOL, see now if you would have only waited 10 years.... Because that´s where "DESKTOPS" were 10 years ago.....

Re: Desktop or Laptops?
laptop or desktop...

I have both... and after 10 years of user experience I can tell you that the laptop is only usefull if you plug an Wifi card into it..

the drawbacks are in preformance with the things we like.. games, multi multi active programs and the preformance of the videocard.. most of the time it is one of those trade-offs of preformance vs. energysaving architecture..

most laptops have bigger L1&2 caches, making it work more efficient but more expensive in price.. overall preformance of laptops is still a problem.

PC`s are cheap and preform $ for $ much much better..

Also, a PC is 99% of the time more cheaply to repair/upgrade.. and things will go kaput, let me tell ya..

The advantage of the laptop is mainly having an internet connection anywhere you like, aslong as it is in range of your wifi card..

I personally use a US-robotics card, and it is really good.. I got an segment antenna and can get online at 2000 meters.. taking the internet outdoors is one of the real good things to argue in favour of the laptop.

"taking the internet outdoors is one of the real good things to argue in favour of the laptop."

I plug mine into my cellphone´s GPRS connection so I can connect to the Internet anywhere in the country. I use WiFi wherever it is available.
