Even in the 19th Century it was fairly rare. The prestige and imprimatur of the Presidency itself is a tremendous tactical advantage in terms of name recognition, familiarity, and ability to raise funds for a re-election campaign. Remember it's both easier and cheaper to maintain the White House for either party than it is to capture from the incumbent. FAR cheaper! Obama will probably win a 2nd term. The republicans will piss and moan but when you come right down to them - lately they've proposed McCain and Palin (Yes, that crazy wench Sarah Palin) and now they're pushing Romney and/or Santorum or Sanitation or whatever that idiots name may be. It's not like they have had a viable candidate for the office of the President in over fifteen years now. |
