It's Chinese New Year...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 9713898
do some research or STFU, thanks.
1) Yes, it is Chinese New Year and the index is always having a dip around this time of the year.
But this time it has plunged 50% lower than average and is still on a very steep decline. The bubble has popped in China.
Read this [link to www.chinalawblog.com] for example.

2) Yes, there is overcapacity of ships but it only grows at 1-2% per month. No way does this explain a 50% in just one month.

The end game has started, buckle up.

Actually I thought that once it dropped below 900 shippers would park their ships because they were in the red, so we are already there.

Learn a thing: NOTHING happens while the BDI is over 900 points.

Only if it drops bellow 900 points you may start to be concerned. Otherwise, shut up and go to sleep.

It will be interesting to see if and when it stops. Inventories are bloated right now, there is a glut of cargo ship, there is nothing really to slow its fall right now.

The only thing slowing its fall is that its dropping 3-4% daily and since it's down so far 3-4% of the remainder is less and less.

However -3% of 680 should break the low tomorrow.

People no longer seem to understand. The simple fact is that Europe is not a major shipping zone. China and Brazil and other regions of the world are major shipping areas.

Baltic Dry Index
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is a number issued daily by the London-based Baltic Exchange. Not restricted to Baltic Sea countries, the index tracks worldwide international shipping prices of various dry bulk cargoes.

Along with this, there was a thread yesterday (which I can't find) that showed a Chinese ports full of cargo ships just docked empty, either because there was no cargo, or the shipping lines shut them down because they would lose money carrying cargo.

Also, I find it almost humerous that with a large spike in BDI, economists will claim that is a sign of economic improvement, but when it plummets, it means nothing. So while BDI may not a be the perfect overall indicator, it is A valuable indicator.

The Baltic Dry Meltdown Continues

The Baltic Dry index, which measures the cost of shipping dry goods around the world, has been in utter free fall for about a month and a half. It has dropped during 27 straight trading days as of Friday’s close.

Yes, count them: 27 sessions date all the way back to Dec. 12. The index has dropped 62% to 726 throughout the process, dipping back toward financial-crisis levels.

The most bearish chart in the world today

On the flipside, a drop in the BDI could suggest that worldwide demand for shipping space – and therefore, for raw materials – is falling. That in turn indicates that the global economy must be about to slow down.

But 2012 has already seen something much worse than a mere slip. The BDI has collapsed in just a month, as the chart below shows.

. . . .

Some of the world’s biggest ships are known as Capesize vessels. They are so called because they’re too big for the Suez Canal and have to travel around the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn.

Shipping rates for these vessels have plunged by an incredible 75% so far this year.

The BDI crashed through its 2008 low today. It's now at 662.
OMFG the horror! This is it. Man the live boats!

Seriously, this is serious. I'm gonna do some research on how the shippers are doing. It probably looks really bad.
The (c(r)ooked) Chinese PMI looked OK in January. It should be down next month. China is landing hard. They can't hide that much longer.
