I think its real but the guy's grinder blade discolored the metal.

Think about it: I find it hard to believe fraudsters would be enticed / able to counterfeit small size SILVER bullion. The payoff would be small or nonexistent versus the work involved.

I thought so too. I've noticed that same kind of discoloration when cutting really high quality stainless, but stainless get's blue and red streaks too.

yeah way to go guys. Cut both items then ensure both of them leave the camera view before showing them to be fake.
surely if you go to this trouble you would do a totally seamless shot of the whole thing??

or are they just really thick?

Re: VIDEO - BEWARE: FAKE Sunshine Mint Silver Bars & 2011 Canadian Maples
There are other videos cutting into it with a band saw with no discoloration. The magnet test can be manipulated. These clowns are just trying to scare buyers away. Just buy a trusted mint and no worries. There are fakes from China but these are not mint brands, usually those colored specialty coins. My local dealer had a few. They were even marked 99.999. But again these were not any mint brand.

So, where is the best place to buy genuine silver? Can you trust APMEX, Gainsville, etc?

I'm new to this and am seriously asking. Thanks!

APMEX is a safe bet, they have a good track record. Stay away from sketchy websites that haven't been around long. Bulliondirect.com is a good place I have purchased from before as well, they typically have the best prices, but shipping seems to take a little longer than APMEX.

Re: VIDEO - BEWARE: FAKE Sunshine Mint Silver Bars & 2011 Canadian Maples
Just to confirm that there is a serious problem with SILVER PLATED Sunshine Minting Inc 1 Oz bars. The guy in the top video was not mucking about - sure he was naive to take the bar out of screen shot - but it is a genuine video.

I have just bought one of these bars and was about to buy anbother 4 when I noticed the seller use the word "layered" to describe a bar which reads

SUNSHINE
MINTING
INC.

.999 FINE
SILVER
ONE TROY
OUNCE

A bit more research and it turns out "layered" means "plated"

The seller previously used the word plated a few months ago and sold bars for about £5. The word "layered" seems to get a price around £27!!!

He has just refunded me my money as I pointed out it cannot be BOTH what it says on the bar AND "layered."

I have emailed sunshine mint yersterday to ask if they produced these as a souvenir or whether they are coming outta China...

Layered as below....they are fake, sellers will also use the term "Roughly 1oz"...these must fool alot of people, I cant see how though as they normally sell at around £10

Re: VIDEO - BEWARE: FAKE Sunshine Mint Silver Bars & 2011 Canadian Maples
I realize this is old by now, but it still showed up quite high on the list when I did a google search for sunshine mint and after seeing some of the comments I felt like maybe I should comment as well.

The guy who does the videos has his heart in the right place but his method is obviously lacking. What really prompted me to post were all the comments saying that this was not fake.

There are definitely fake sunshine mint 1oz bars circulating. I have seen one and it's quite easy to tell the difference, IF you know what the real ones look like.

A much more helpful video would have been to simply show close-ups of the real and fakes side by side, but I have not seen anything like that yet.

For the sunshine mint 1oz bars: These are actually quite good. The way to tell the difference is that the fakes have squarer corners. The real ones are slightly more rounded. The easiest way to tell is the little sunshine icon on the back side in the upper left corner. On the real bar the sun in the top left almost touches the edge, on the fake you can see the rays extending.

The Canadian maple fake I have not seen in person (probably because that one is terrible and incredibly easy to spot) I have seen a close up of one though and anyone who has ever seen a real maple would never be fooled by this one. When you look at the leaf on a real maple you will see incredibly intricate, detailed texture of the leaf. On the fake that I saw the close-up photo of, the leaf is simply flat and shiny with only the veins of the leaf drawn in, no texture at all. Even some of the veins are the wrong length or in the wrong spot. Clearly fake.

I really wish the guy that made these videos would have at least taken a couple close ups as most people are not going to be able to start grinding off the edge of a coin they are thinking of buying. Instead, I wish he would have put together a much more helpful video showing the easy, non-destructive, ways to identify fake silver.
