Not only is a dormant volcano (twin peaks at that) nearby, there is also a supervolcano near the rift in New Mexico. Here is a quote from an article I found "Located in the Jemez Volcanic Field, Valles Caldera is actually one of the smaller supervolcanoes — the caldera only measure 12 miles across as opposed to the Yellowstone caldera which is 45 miles wide and 31 miles long. It is the youngest of two calderas in the region." All of the rift area is only being recently studied. And nobody seems to pay attention to any of this!
