Otherwise the government would be all up in that ass of yours lol Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars. I'd like to go quietly in my sleep, like grandpa did. Not screaming in terror like the people in the back seat of the car he was driving. |

Jack73 (OP) User ID: 1511636 United States 01/15/2012 12:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP, you must have lots of water for all those plants. When is your area frost-free to set the plants out? Quoting: Old Coot I will start them in the garden with a cold frame around them- where the garden is it gets the first sun from about 9am to about 11 then from 2to 3 ish but more as the sun moves north again, but the last frost is hit or miss where I am - zone 7a Baltimore area as for the water, where one of them is I dont have to water it every day or even every other day, its close to a drain run off and that part of the yard is wet all the time even in high summer so there is really only one I have to keep and eye on. I really do like the set up- I didnt plan it that way it just worked out. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 781675 Canada 01/15/2012 02:41 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a huge list of flower seeds too but this year I am concentrating more on food seeds mainly due to the increasing cost of food. 2 years ago Hubby gave me a 20x10ft greenhouse for my birthday that I can start seeds and grow food in and it has solar fans and heat 4 sensing auto-pop up roof vents if it gets too hot in summer. If we get something bad in the air I could adapt an sir filtration system to it also to grow survivalists foods. We also have 10 laying hens and 2 roosters to take care of the protein needs. We had great success with Tomatoes, eggplant, okra, corn, turnips, kale, spinach, romain, broccoli and potatoes last year. We also have apple, orange, meyers lemon, grapefruit, blueberry and grapes growing. I want to plant a pecan tree for more protein but hubby is fighting me on that because of those web worms they often get. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8457939 I'm doing a herbal flower garden this year. I've also got some seeds growing in a little hot house of lettuces and herbs and peppers. Can you explain more of your companion planting? Thers all kinds of info on line but basically you plant one type of plant that plays well with the other like tomatoes n basil. I did it this year with great sucess. And I had very little horn worms as well not sure if its connected. Thereafter lots of things you can combine to use up all your space (less weeding) for one thing. Radish and zucchini did well also |

The stuff we tried in the greenhouse got insect eaten (what we don't know). Will also start the tomatoes and the herbs. We planted deck boxes last season on the upper deck and covered the tops with chicken wire to keep out the tiny squirrels we get here (Western WA). But they just used the wire to sit on while they stashed their grub in the boxes. We're just getting into gardening, and make our share of mistakes and nature sometimes doesn't cooperate, but we keep working at it. We also have sprouting capabilities for eating purposes if need be. We have four chickens (started with eight, then went down to one) and three just came into laying. We let them free-range and it took time to figure out where they were depositing the eggs, since it wasn't in the nesting boxes in their coop. They were pretty good and were getting into the chicken tractor and using those nesting boxes! Love our chickies! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1486940 United States 01/15/2012 07:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Question: A neighbor just gave me seeds that are from 2007 (in packets) for a few types of veggies. Do you think they will germinate? My feeling is that only some of them will, and they may not be too vital. Funny thing is, the most vital plants I ever grew were when I put a carrot top in water, and when I have a spare bean lying around and I just stick it in the dirt. Funny how that works out. The most stubborn thing I ever planted was last spring's currant tomatoes. I think they were under 2" high for months, and now they are finally like 4' high, but they got a bad case of white fly and began to get yellow, then brown, which was so disappointing. I tried the store bought spray, didn't work, and made my own, worked, but for a short time, and I cannot be spraying every day. Then I read that there is yellow, sticky paper that they can be caught on, but they didn't have any of that at the local place, so I bought fly strips instead. Then I went to the local copy/print shop, got some really bright, yellow paper, put it into a sheet protector to protect from the elements (it does fade, tho, after a while outside). Then I pulled out the fly strip from the little cannister and laid it across the sheet protector/paper, secured in a V shape with masking tape, and hung it at the top of the stake that the tomatoes are on. It worked great, no more flies. My inner McGuyver always comes through! |

If in good storage, they can last years and years...but yeah every year they loose vitality. But then they said that they grew corn from the mayans old stock pile. |

My inner McGuyver always comes through! old seeds will vary in germination depending on species as well as how they were stored. tomatos will remain viable for quite a while whereas peppers are not much good after 3-4 years cabbage about the same. you can increase your success by providing bottom heat {place seed flats on the top of your refrigerator until seedlings are just breaking the surface then move to a better lighted area} hope this helps |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 8241272 United States 01/15/2012 10:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I recommend Ruth Stout's No Work Garden. Anyone who wants to garden or does garden I guarantee will love it. Informative, and a great read. I have bumper crops and I don't till or water my garden, just mulch, mulch, mulch! I started mushrooms last spring too. I don't know if the plugs took but I am begging the Morrells to make but they all take a few years to materialize so will see. I really want to expand my asparagus this year with white and purple varieties. I couldn't begin to list all that I grow...I guess the newest additions have been nut trees and mushrooms. |
