School wants kids for over 10 hours a day, admitting to ENTICING and REWARDING kids with breakfast, lunch and now dinner
From this article...

For Students Facing Long School Day, Supper Is Being Served

New Program Seeks To Reach Those Students Who May Leave For Homes Without Food

A free meal at school for breakfast, lunch — and dinner?

About 450 city students have been eating supper in school cafeterias as part of a government-funded meal program that may expand in Hartford and also to other Connecticut school systems this year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture gives schools about $2.99 per dinner to serve students in after-school activities that involve academics.

New London was the first school system in the state to begin serving free dinner about a year ago, and Hartford, East Hartford and New Britain started their programs last fall.

A Manchester elementary school is also in the process of being approved for the federal "at-risk" after-school meals program, according to the state Department of Education, which receives applications from schools throughout the year.

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, supported by First Lady Michelle Obama, included a national expansion of the program that the USDA estimates could help an additional 140,000 children in low-income areas.

In Connecticut, school administrators hope the extra meal will entice families to consider a much longer school day. Students receiving dinner spend as many as 10 hours at school, first in classes and then in late-afternoon activities, including tutoring.

...

Elizabeth Giannetta, a community school director for COMPASS, said that without the dinner, "a lot of our kids go to homes without food."

...

The extra meal is "a reward in some ways, and the students are able to talk more freely with teachers," Sharry said. "It's more informal. It's almost like they're sitting at the dinner table."

This comment in particular concerns me. It sounds like if there is no food at all, that's essentially child neglect?

The government does not want parents involved in their children's lives at all. When would you see your child if they are at school for 50 hours a week?
And then, what, they come home with 3 hours of homework?

Yep, lets be nice and just say 1 hour of homework..but 10 hours at school, and lets do a total of 1 hour commute (30 min or so each way on the bus) so that's 12, and then the kid needs at least 8 hours of sleep too, that's 20 hours right there. No family time, down time... OH OH, I got an idea...maybe they can just set up bunks or cots in the school to help with that. After all, it's for the children. yeahsure

The neglect is the result of a runaway capitalist system and not from the parents just doing their best to survive from it's ravages.

Imagine high school!

Eventually they will just set up the indoctrination centers, err, public schools with boarding facilities. Besides the government can raise your kids better than you can, it's for your own good.

If you're considering homeschooling (which is the most awesome thing ever, btw), then check out the book "Homeschooling for Dummies". It's a great place to get started, if you're on the fence about whether or not it's something you want to do.
My son has more time to be a kid now, and he's learnig waaaaay more than he ever did in public school. Also, he has plenty of extracurricular activities, and plays with the neighborhood kids, so he is 'socialized'.

Depending on what state you live in, homeschooling can be very easy. Even if you live in a state that isn't friendly to homeschoolers, it is still legal in all 50 states.

it'll be like the old days, instead of working in a factory they'll be book learnin. plus they'll be better prepared for the transition into white/blue collar debt slavery.

im all for kids having full bellies but this just means higher taxes. in the end resulting in more families not being able to provide for them thus consenting to this garbage out of guilt.

if i had to stay in school for 10 hours i'd stab myself in the neck with a pencil.

He's in 4th grade. But he tells me it's easier. Like for example if he has to do 74x3 he will put 70 in one box and 4 in the other. but you still have to get over the hump of 7x3 you know? I had him do one in a box method it took him 10 minutes to do one problem, then I had him do it the traditional way, the way you and I were taught, he had it done in less than a minute.

Why are they teaching kids this crap?

There's a lot more to it than just putting time in with your kids, particularly with many parents both working two minimum wage jobs just to survive.
I know parents that are working seven days a week trying to save enough money to get their kids a start in college.
My neighbors son is a good example. He is sixteen and an honor roll student and now works 25 hours a week, putting every penny into his college fund.
Last week this kid's mother came home from work at 10pm and could not get into her home because her son had left the chain guard on the door. I could hear her yelling at Michael to wake up through her ajared door from across the street. To make a long story short, we had to use my chain cutters to break in. Michael had fallen asleep at his computer doing his home work. Despite being less than twenty feet away from the door neither of us could wake him.
Michael had arrived home from his job as a cashier at Wegmans only an hour earlier.
I don't know how one can define quality time. Apparently Mickael's mom is doing something right with the little time she has to spend with him.

Thread: More school: Obama would curtail summer vacation

Students beware: The summer vacation you just enjoyed could be sharply curtailed if President Barack Obama gets his way.

Obama says American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.
"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas," the president said earlier this year. "Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom."

If they are unwilling or unable to make dinner for their children then what are they doing with the food stamps and welfare etc. they are receiving!!!

So now its the educational system's responsibility to nourish and nurture children? I warned people about this years ago and nobody listened, but with each passing day the tentacles of the capitalist octopus encroach on the family construct with more force than the last.

We must never let schools raise our children. This is an outrage, write to your senators.

I live in a pretty easy homeschooling state (FL). My legal requirements are as follows:
- I had to send a letter of intent to the school board when I first started homeschooling.

- I am required to keep a portfolio with samples of my son's work (writing, workbook pages, tests), a list of all reading material we use for school, and I have to keep a log of all educational activites. I have to keep each year's portfolio for 2 years, but I only have to show it to the school board if they request it in writing (this almost never happens to anyone)

- Finally, every year, I have to have my son's progress evaluated. I can either have him take a standardized test (either the state's test, or a nationally normed test), or I can have a certified teacher do a portfolio evaluation/interview with my son. Either way, I get a letter from the tester/teacher to send in to the school board. I am not required to send in the test results, just the letter to prove I am complying with the law.

Every state is different. Some states require a lot less than this, and some require a lot more. Check with [link to www.hslda.org] for more details on your state's requirement.

I don't find my state to be too intrusive, and the portfolio is not as complicated as it first sounds. The "Homeschooling for Dummies" book has a lot of good info on how to create portfolios. I borrowed it from my local library when I was doing my research.

Here's the way I see it, if you spend a few hours Doug homework with your child, you can teach them more than what they are currently learnig in school in about 4 hrs a day. Then, they have time to take music lessons, or play sports, or just RELAX! Kids don't get enough time to relax anymore, IMO.

This is great news! now underpriveledged/neglected children have somewhere to stay later in the day to learn, eat and socialize. America needs to have longer school days and no summer break to compete with other countries. Why are you all acting like teaching children the things they need to know and giving children meals is a horrible communist conspiracy?

I'm sorry but this makes me howl laughing.

Can you see all the fat ass kids revolting because they have to get home to lay on their fat lazy asses to play video games! lmao And, the will! They are completely addicted to computer games.

I have a stepson that will purposely ruin a vacation or an evening out so he can get his fat ass on his computer (his Dad let's him, I would not if I could get my way)

I've never seen anything like it.

I home schooled all tree of my sons off and on. When they went to school I picked them up at 12:00 most of the time they spent about 2 hours a day in home school. They were always way ahead of their class mates.
They all went to college one just finished his PHD. So Why 10 hours?
Our granddaughter is home schooled she spends 2 hours a day studying and is doing 4th grade math. She would be in the second grade. She is learning Hebrew knows all the US States has memorized 30 elements of the periodic table 5 more every week. On and on it goes, she loves to learn and never wants to go back to public or private school, she jumps on her trampoline for hours, swims with her dad every day in the summer, she is vegetarian and helps me cook new meals all the time, we have lots of fun she will start college at 15, in Texas you can do that.

Soooooooooooooo my question is why do they want children for 10 hours? They can't teach them now.

Just like every other government program, there is always somebody willing to "wag the dog". They take people who are already staying after...say, for basketball practice. Get them to do 10 minutes of "academics", not feed them anything then get the $2.99 anyway. I will guarantee you, that is exactly what the fuckers are doing. This isn't about the school wanting control of the kids longer; this is about the school wanting to squeeze them into that "money door". Find any and every excuse to "qualify" the kids for the free meal so they can claim the money.

See, all they have to do is serve some nasty ass shit like Sheriff Joe serves at tent city and nobody will eat it. They can make up a pot of shoe leather stew for about $1 per 100 servings and rake in the profit. Make no mistake, that's what they are up to.
I only believe half of what I read and even half of that is bullshit.

I think you can't home school in California if I remember correctly.

When they keep the kids so many more hours, WHO is going to pay the teachers when the school districts can't afford teachers as it is???

This is great news! now underpriveledged/neglected children have somewhere to stay later in the day to learn, eat and socialize. America needs to have longer school days and no summer break to compete with other countries. Why are you all acting like teaching children the things they need to know and giving children meals is a horrible communist conspiracy?

I agree with this.

They could be playing sports or learning to play an instrument instead of being left to roam the streets hungry or sit in front of the TV or computer with a bucket full of cheetos.

The government does not want parents involved in their children's lives at all. When would you see your child if they are at school for 50 hours a week?
And then, what, they come home with 3 hours of homework?

it'll be like the old days, instead of working in a factory they'll be book learnin. plus they'll be better prepared for the transition into white/blue collar debt slavery.

im all for kids having full bellies but this just means higher taxes. in the end resulting in more families not being able to provide for them thus consenting to this garbage out of guilt.

if i had to stay in school for 10 hours i'd stab myself in the neck with a pencil.

I hardly call what kid's do in public school, "book learning".
