Increase in activity reported at Ecuador’s Tungurahua volcano

April 9, 2012 – ECUADOR - A new increase in the seismic activity of Tungurahua Volcano, in Ecuador, began early Monday with a constant sign of high energy tremor linked with ash emissions. According to the report of the Geophysics Institute of the National Polytechnic School, the increase of the seismic activity in this crater started with a column of smoke that reached 3 kilometers high along with low intensity roaring and sounds. The first explosions caused minor thunders or crashes due to the rolling of blocks through the side walls of the volcano. Shortly after, the falling of black and fine ashes on populations in the south-southwest regions, such as Palitahua, Capil, and Toctes, was reported. Ice floes along the Kamchatka coastline seen from ISS


The irregular southeastern coastline of Kamchatka provokes large, circular eddy currents to spin off from the main southwestward-flowing Kamchatka current. Three such eddies are observed by the International Space Station (ISS) as the winter season blankets the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia in snow. Significant amounts of sea ice can also form and collect along the Pacific coastline. As ice floes grind against each other, they produce smaller floes that can be moved by wind and currents.

Ice floes are frozen masses of seawater (saltwater) that float on the surface of the sea. The term is applied to any relatively flat piece of sea ice that is free moving – unlike pack ice. The tracking of ice floes is important to both understanding critical environmental issues such as global warming, and to aid in navigation. The patterns are very difficult and dangerous to navigate in an ocean vessel. It is also the most dynamic and dangerous place to be in the spring, and each year, unsuspecting people are set adrift as the ice fractures and large ice floes float out to sea. This often happens in weather conditions that make air searches and rescue efforts difficult or impossible....

The alert level for central Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz volcano was lowered from red to orange Monday, reported local media. Colombia's meteorological institute IDEAM, which has been monitoring the volcano closely since plumes of smoke and sulfur dioxide emissions were reported last month, made the decision after studying areas below the volcano. Its last eruption in 1985 killed around 25,000 people, and it is estimated up to 500,000 people could be at risk if it erupts again. IDEAM had raised the level to red Sunday due to heavy rains, which would increase the risk of avalanches should the volcano erupt. "Being in the middle of the rainy season, we suggest people remain vigilant and to keep watch for new events in the days that heavy rains occur," said an IDEAM spokesperson. Authorities said last week said local residents should not be afraid, as an effective 24-hour patrol and alarm system was in place.

Cleveland Volcano is continuing to erupt. The restless volcano on uninhabited Chuginadak Island exploded twice on Friday, sending up small ash clouds. A larger eruption on Wednesday destroyed a lava dome that been growing in the summit crater. Cleveland has been experiencing a pattern of lava dome growth and destruction since last July. Scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory said in a release that there’s no sign of new lava dome growth since Friday’s explosions. The Observatory warns that unrest will likely continue at the volcano, with the possibility of sudden explosions accompanied by ash clouds exceeding 20,000 feet.

Signs of activity at Shishaldin (tremor), Iliamna (pop-corn earthquakes) and Redoubt (harmonics in the form of tornillos, see 0409 at ~09.50) plus instrument malfunctions at Iliamna, Okmok and Pavlov. Nevado del Ruiz volcano (Colombia): Red Alert declared

The Colombian authorities have declared a red alert for the area around the volcano Nevado del Ruiz and warn the population against the feared mud flows (lahars) that are to be expected in an eruption of the volcano. The status of the volcano itself is described as eruption likely in the coming days or weeks.
The reason is a steady increase in seismic activity and gas emissions from the summit crater....

An Icelandic volcano even bigger than the one that shut down European air travel when it erupted in 2010 is showing signs of activity, scientists say. Erratic movements of the surface of the volcano, measured by precise GPS instruments, and bursts of high earthquake activity have been recorded beneath Katla's caldera, researchers said. Both are possible signs that magma has risen to shallower depths beneath the caldera, they said. While the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull left millions of travelers stranded across Europe and cost airlines an estimated $200 million a day for six days, signs of high activity beneath the much larger, neighboring Katla caldera are a possible sign of an impending eruption that could be more dangerous, Andy Hooper at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands said. Historically, Katla has erupted on average of every 60 years but has not had a significant eruption since 1918, Hooper said. Also, he said, eruptions of Eyjafjallajokull in 1821-23 and 1612 were followed within months by eruptions of Katla, and Katla's 1918 eruption produced five times as much ash as the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull one.

Activity of volcano Nevado del Ruiz, April 11, 2012, 08:30 am


During the last 24 hours, monitoring the various parameters show that the volcanic system is still unstable. The seismicity associated with fluid movement and fracturing of rock within the volcano, showed decrease in number and magnitude of events dominate the seismic activity associated with fluid motion, which was located mainly in the Arenas crater depths that did not exceed 2.0 km.

Although the weather did not allow monitoring of surface activity from the city of Manizales, or from the cameras installed in the volcano area, satellite images showing emission processes continue to show water vapor and other gases of volcanic origin.

It is worth noting that the monitoring of the activity of the volcano is difficult due to the different monitoring parameters, thus, a decrease of seismicity in short periods of time should not be interpreted as the stabilization of the volcano; and therefore still does not warrant a change in level of activity.

The Geological Survey of Columbia continues to oversee the activity of the volcano and w ill continue to report in a timely manner the changes that may occur. Tungurahua volcano explosion

At 08:56 (local time) today, April 11, 2012, there was a moderate sized explosion that generated a column emission with high ash content of 4-5 km height approximately above the crater and direction of movement to the north-east, east and south-east the lower column and upper emission to the north-west. This explosion caused the ejection of incandescent blocks that rolled a distance of approximately 500 to 600 meters below the crater rim on the northeast side. Seismically the explosion was followed by a signal of high-energy tremor lasted about 40 minutes....
