New Zealand’s White Island volcano showing growing signs of unrest Quoting: Luisport Posted on August 2, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol August 2, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND – White Island volcano is showing signs of increased activity, GNS Science says. The volcano, about 49 kilometres off the coast of Whakatane, is a popular tourist spot, but GNS volcanologist Michael Rosenberg says those visiting it should be cautious even though the alert level for the island had not changed. “Eruptions can occur at any time with little or no warning. The recent changes in activity suggest that the hydrothermal system has become unstable, and as a result the risk has increased,” Rosenberg said. GNS Science has changed the volcano’s code from a ‘normal, non eruptive state’ to ‘experiencing signs of elevated unrest above known background levels.’ The volcano’s lake level quickly rose by about three to five meters sometime between Friday and Saturday last week, exposing a ‘vigorous’ flow of gas and steam into the air, Rosenberg said. It has risen in the past, but took much longer than the 24 hours it took to rise three to five meters on Friday and Saturday, he said. During the past few weeks there had also been some minor volcanic tremor, including several hours on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Last year and earlier this year the lake started to evaporate and exposed steam vents and two large muddy pools. “These phenomena are typical for White Island’s activity, but are the first substantial changes to occur in the last few years,” Rosenberg said. No-one lives on the privately-owned island but flights and boat-trips to the island are common. –Stuff [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] hiya luis now this one, i can watch, if it erupts... The Volcanoes were not active then. The reason why this is happening is because the Atlantic Ridge is shifting, on top of this they deposited nuclear waste underneath this island plus the vibrations from what there doing underground is making it even worse but our Galactic Friends are making sure it doesnt erupt also the Japanese saw if there country has another terrible earthquake there gonna put nuclear bombs under el hierro. Italy begins drilling into super-volcano that, if erupts, could kill millions Posted on August 4, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol August 4, 2012 – ITALY – Across the bay of Naples from Pompeii, where thousands were incinerated by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, lies a hidden ‘super volcano’ that could kill millions in a catastrophe many times worse, scientists say. The boiling mud and sulphurous steam holes of the area west of Naples known as the Campi Flegrei or Phlegraean Fields, from the Greek word for burning, are a major tourist attraction. But the zone of intense seismic activity, which the ancients thought was the entrance to hell, also could pose a danger of global proportions with millions of people literally living on top of a potential future volcanic eruption. ‘These areas can give rise to the only eruptions that can have global catastrophic effects comparable to major meteorite impacts,’ said Giuseppe De Natale, head of a project to drill deep under the earth to monitor the molten ‘caldera.’ Benedetto De Vivo, a geochemist at Naples University, has said the drilling could cause an explosion. The Naples city council blocked the project in 2010 but it resumed on the site of an abandoned steel mill at Bagnoli, west of Naples, late last month after the recently elected new mayor, Luigi De Magistris, gave the go-ahead. De Natale scoffed at the objections, saying that the drilling was perfectly safe and that similar probes had been sent down by mining projects looking for sources of thermal energy in the 1980s and earlier. “There were dozens of drillings in the past, with much less secure instruments for industrial motives and nobody said anything,” he said. He added that those raising objections were not experts on drilling and that their suggestions of potential earthquakes or escapes of magma or liquid molten rock had been exaggerated by the local press. “Some of the things they suggested are laughable,” he said, adding that the project’s priority will be scientific knowledge and safety of the local population rather than industrial exploitation as in the past. “We believe the security of millions of people deserves the most powerful methods of inquiry without thinking too much about the economic aspect,” he said. He added that drilling is the only way to discover the geological history of the area because successive eruptions buried previous evidence. The probe has already found volcanic rock from a major eruption 15,000 years ago. De Natale’s team has begun drilling a pilot hole at the Bagnoli site, where a long jetty built to load steel is used by joggers and courting couples enjoying the spectacular Neapolitan sunsets. The pilot hole is aimed not only at studying the stratification of the area but to establish a deep geological observatory with new instruments which De Natale says are many times more sensitive than those in the past. “This will increase by a thousand or 10,000 times our ability to detect small episodes that are precursors of future eruptions,” he said. Steam plume seen over New Zealand’s White Island volcanic crater Posted on August 5, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol August 5, 2012 – NEW ZEALAND - A steam plume has been visible at the White Island crater today. Earlier this week GNS Science issued a volcanic alert for White Island, which is off the coast of the Bay of Plenty, due to signs of increased activity. According to GNS, although more volcanic activity has been recorded, ‘everything seems to be relatively stable.’ Volcanologists have recorded a rapid rise in White Island’s crater lake, a pulse of volcanic tremor and slightly higher gas levels in the plume. “Although the volcanic tremor increased substantially during Saturday it has returned to levels similar to those during the early part of last week,” GNS said. The white steam plume can sometimes be seen from areas of the Bay of Plenty coast. On Thursday, GNS Science duty volcanologist Michael Rosenberg said its crater lake has started to re-fill and gases were now ‘vigorously streaming through it. Airborne gas measurements show that the discharge of some sulphur gases has increased,’ he said. GNS volcanologists plan to visit White Island early next week to collect water and gas samples and make a ground level survey of the crater floor. These measurements will help understand what changes are taking place beneath the volcano and whether these might lead to increased surface activity. –One News [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

During the past week there has been an increase in volcanic tremor and volcanic gas levels. Overnight Friday July 27 to Saturday July 28 the lake level in the Crater Lake at White Island rose by about 3 m to 5 m. A volcanic earthquake was also recorded indicating an eruption may have occurred. A flow of gas and steam has been present through the lake and from vents near the lake since then. A gas flight on August 1 recorded increases of sulphur gases in the steam and volcanic gas plume. Since early July there have been intermittent periods of volcanic tremor, becoming more continuous since July 28. A particularly stronger episode was recorded overnight August 4 - 5, and ended in a volcanic earthquake at 04:54 am NZST. Examination of the images from the Factory webcam between 04:54 am and 04:57 am on August 5 have revealed an eruption from the Crater Lake, nicely lit by the moon (see photo sequence below). These phenomena are not unknown for White Island, but this is the first substantial confirmation that small scale eruptions are now occurring on the island and confirms the risk to visitors has increased. White Island is an active volcano and there is always risk when visiting the island. Eruptions can occur at any time with little or no warning. We advise extra caution should be taken if visiting the island. GNS Science volcanologists are monitoring the activity and further information will be released as soon as it is available. SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! Large underwater volcano found off foot of continental shelf of West Iceland? Posted on August 6, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol August 6, 2012 – ICELAND – A mountain which the Icelandic Marine Research Institute (Hafró) discovered on the ocean floor west off the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland during an expedition earlier this summer may turn out to be a previously unknown volcano. “Multi-laser measurements… revealed a large underwater mountain deep off the foot of the continental shelf approximately 120 nautical miles west of Snæfellsnes,” a statement from Hafró reads, according to Fréttablaðið. The mountain, which is at a depth of 950 to 1,400 meters is around 450 meters high, similar to Ingólfsfjall in south Iceland. However, it extends over 300 square kilometers, which is ten times the square measure of Ingólfsfjall. The shape of the mountain is very similar to that of table mountains and it appears to be geologically young. “The analysis of a rock sample from the mountain will determine whether this is the case or whether it is a volcano connected with an old drift belt, which might mean that it is 20 million years old,” the statement continues. During the expedition multi-laser measurements were made between West Iceland and Greenland to map the shape of the ocean floor in these commonly-used fishing grounds and explore the environment of powerful ocean currents. A total of 9,000 square kilometers were covered during the 11-day expedition. –Iceland Review [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

The island, located about 50 kilometres off the coast of Whakatane, is an active volcano and a popular tourist spot. Its web camera captured the small eruption from Crater Lake, GNS Science volcanologist Michael Ronsenberg said. “These phenomena are not unknown for While Island, but this is the first substantial confirmation that small scale eruptions are now occurring on the island and confirms the risk to visitors has increased,” he said. “Eruptions can occur at any time with little or no warning. We advise extra caution should be taken, if visiting the island.” GNS has changed the volcano’s code from ‘experiencing signs of elevated unrest above known background levels’ to ‘volcanic eruption is underway with no or minor ash emissions.’ The alert level has also changed from one to two due to ‘minor eruptive activity.’ It follows a code change last week when scientists discovered water levels in Crater Lake rose by about 3m to 5m overnight and the number of tremors had increased. There was a particularly stronger seismic episode recorded Sunday morning, ending in a volcanic earthquake at 4.54 am that day. Rosenberg said: “The earthquake had a sound signal, which meant something happened on the surface. So we went back and looked at the camera images. Obviously being at night time, there was no visual observations and initially we weren’t able to determine what that small event was. But we’ve narrowed it down and recognise that there has been full hydrothermal eruption.” Rosenberg said there had not been any further eruptions, and the number of tremors had decreased. –Stuff [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com] |

SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! How Dangerous is Visiting New Zealand’s White Island? By Erik KlemettiEmail AuthorAugust 6, 2012 There has always been a fragile relationship between volcanoes and tourism. Volcanic features are some of the most fascinating in the world – just look at the millions of people who visit Yellowstone or Crater Lake National Parks for but two examples of hundreds of volcanic tourist attractions around the world (and that doesn’t even consider all the extinct volcanoes or volcanic deposits that can create amazing landscapes as well). However, with the splendor of volcanic features comes the danger that you, as a tourist, are visiting an active volcano. Sometimes, that danger is low, where either the volcano has been dormant for thousands of years, but the signs of magma beneath are still visible. However, the danger can appear to be low in some places but in reality, you are literally putting your lives in the hands of tour operators when you make the visit. One of the best examples of this might be White Island in New Zealand. Off the northern coast of the North Island in the Bay of Plenty, White Island is an active volcano that is part of the volcanic arc that stretches from the Kermadec Islands to the north all the way to Ruapehu in the south. Most of the volcanic edifice sits underwater, but the main crater is above water, sitting out like a sentinel in the Bay. Boat tours of White Island occur daily from Whakatane, where tourists can go to the island and actually walk inside the main crater – which, in theory, is nothing more hazardous than taking a stroll through the Norris Geyser Basin at Yellowstone or Bumpass Hell at Lassen. However, unlike those locations, White Island has erupted recently – in fact, between 1998-2001, the volcano produced multiple VEI 2-3 eruptions and is one of the most active in New Zealand. Does this mean that tours shouldn’t happen? It is a tricky question. I was in New Zealand in 2009 and considered taking the White Island tour. However, the more I thought about it, the more it bothered me that these tours, although offering warning to tourists of the potential dangers, are potentially the perfect cocktail for a Galeras-like tragedy. By making the visits to the White Island crater seem routine, it can lull the tour operators and tourists into a false sense of security, much like what happened with Stanley Williams and the other volcanologists who visited the crater of Galeras in January 1993. In the case of Galeras, the volcanologists were caught off guard by a relatively small explosion in the crater, leading to the deaths of 6 of the science team and 3 tourists. Visiting White Island is almost exactly the same as climbing down into the crater at Galeras, and although GNS Science keeps close tabs on the activity at White Island, the 1993 tragedy at Galeras shows that even seasoned veterans of volcano monitoring can be fooled or volcanoes can erupt with little to no notice (such as what White Island did in 2000) … and unlike the Tongariro Crossing that passes between two active volcanoes, the White Island tours go into the active volcano’s crater. That being said, people (tourists and tour operators) should also be able to make choices on their own rather than being told what is and isn’t safe by the government. However, a line needs to be drawn somewhere about what can be permissible and what represents such a high danger than allowing underprepared (and potentially oblivious) tourists into an area. New Zealand definitely leans towards the side of letting people make this decision – when I visited the Waimangu Geothermal Valley, I was taken by how close they allow people to come to active hydrothermal features, with boiling, acidic waters and active steam vents (as compared to the careful shepherding of tourists at Yellowstone, for example). For the White Island tours, people are given protective equipment like gas masks and helmets, but if even a small phreatic (steam-driven) explosion were to happen when a group was in the crater, the consequences could be catastrophic. Will it take a half dozen deaths at White Island to change the culture, or is that merely the cost of being adventurous? It is hard to say. Currently, White Island is at Alert Level 2 (one step above Tongariro and Ruapehu) after experiencing a small night eruption. GNS Science raised the aviation alert at White Island to “Orange” as well. Over the last few weeks, the small crater lake at the island refilled and new vigorous steam plumes and sulfur dioxide emissions have increased over rhe last 3 months (although carbon dioxide emissions have remained the same). Seismic tremor and potential slow inflation have been noted at the island during the first half of 2012 as well. An obvious steam plume being seen coming from the crater (see above) after a substantial increase in seismicity on Saturday (August 4), which has now returned to normal levels. All of these signs suggest that what has been a quiet decade for White Island might be drawing to a close. After Sunday night’s small eruption, it is unclear whether tours will still go to the island, for now. There doesn’t seem to be much evidence that Sunday’s eruption had much (if any) warning, so we are very lucky that it occurred in the middle of the night. Keep tabs on White Island using the GeoNet webicorder or webcams for the volcano. [link to www.wired.com] |

SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! Confirmed eruption at Mt Tongariro Posted on August 6, 2012 by volcanocafe Source: Global Volcanism Program. Photo by Jim Cole, 1974 (University of Canterbury) This post will most likely be updated fairly quickly as news come up and we get more information. It seems like Mt Tongariros awaited eruption has started. The eruption seems to be generated out of the Te Mari Craters. Witnesses report an ash column that exceeds 6 000 meters with steady lightning. There are also reports of lava bombs or incandescent lava slabs being ejected from the volcanic vent located on the side of the mountain. That witnesses talk about a hole in the side of the mountain points towards a new crater in the Te Mari crater-area. Tongariro is a part of the Taupo volcanic belt. It is one of the most prolific volcanoes in New Zeeland. The last eruption was in 1977. During the last 115 years it has erupted 49 times through the southern crater complex, Ngauruhoe, while the Te Mari crater has been dormant. The Eruption follows magmatic emplacements during 2006 and 2009 and increased activity during the last few weeks. The Ngauruhoe eruptions have been moderately explosive with only 3 eruptions ranging VEI-3; the others have been predominantly VEI-2 eruptions with just a few being even smaller. 550 BC there was the last larger eruption, a VEI-5 out of Ngauruhoe crater. The last VEI-5 out of Te Mari crater was 9350 BC. There is currently nothing pointing towards this eruption going to exceed a VEI-3 eruption. One should though note that eruptions from previously semi-dormant craters in a complex andesitic volcano can be livelier than the previous eruptions from a well used crater part. The amount of activity and height of initial ash column seems to point more towards a small VEI-3 than a VEI-2. So there is some cause for concern for those who live close by. This post will be updated as soon as we get more news. For latest news we recommend that you follow the comment thread. Expect that there will be a call for evacuation of locals soon. SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! Eruptions at Tongariro & Whaakari (White Island) and 1 million viewers! Posted on August 7, 2012 by volcanocafe As most of you know 2012 had up until a couple of days ago been rather free from significant eruptions, but that has now changed. As the ash and smoke starts to clear we now know that the explosions at both Whaakari and Tongariro was not the main events. Tongariro Image by Lurking showing ash column height and ash spread radius. This plot was also made at the same time as Lurking became the 1 millionth viewer. Quite fitting really. The eruption that happened during last night was mainly driven by water pushed past the steam flash point. That in turn caused a large steam driven explosion that hurled incandescent stones out of no less than 3 new vents in the mountain close to the Te Mari craters. The steam also lofted ash and steam up to a height of 6 000 meters (20 000 feet, or FLA 200 as the VAAC terminology goes). Photograph by Diana Booth. Rare image of an ash and steam cloud taken from below as it rises into the heavens after an explosive phase ends. The steam explosion was caused by rising magma hitting the permanent water table, also, the magma from Tongariro contains a lot of water, and that most likely decompressed into a steam explosion. The event was rather short in duration. According to the seismograph plots the actual explosion was about 1 minute long, and the main eruptive phase was about 20 minutes long. After that there was mainly steam being ejected. The steam phase lasted for about 20 hours when a second smaller steam driven ash explosion occurred. Image by Geonet. Risks at Tongariro This is most likely not the main event, this is just a pre-cursor activity as magma rises. It is quite normal for andesitic subduction volcanoes to have an initial phase of steam driven ash explosions like this. This phase can last for a day or two up to a few weeks before the real eruption starts. Quite often the size of the steam explosions are indicative of what will come during the main event, and a steam driven ash explosion that lofts up material to 6000 meters height is telling us that there can be something rather large in the making. My best guess is that this will be around a VEI-3 eruption. Earlier today I read an interview with a local woman living close to the volcano. I was taken rather aback when I read that she felt safe where she was living. She was telling about seeing ash and steam rolling down the side of the volcano into the valley she lived in. Apparently she and other locals think this is as bad as it gets. This is rather ignorant since the main dangers are lahars and the even worse pyroclastic flows running down the mountain into the valleys. I hope that the valleys will be evacuated in time. One should though not forget that the eruption can change pace rapidly, and that it is better to be safe than sorry. Dead is a rather permanent position in life. [link to www.stuff.co.nz] Whaakari (White Island) Image by Geonet. Moonlighting volcano at its best! Beginning of the nightly steam explosion at Whaakari (White Island) back lighted by the wonderful moonligh. Whaakari is also a member of the TVZ (Taupo Volcanic Zone). It is a very large volcano built up by no less than 78 cubic kilometers of material. It is a complex volcano containing multiple vents and craters. A few days ago the Crater Lake went from being a small mud pool into being a sizeable lake as the water level rose 6 meters over night due to increase in hydrothermal pressure. A day later (also at night) a steam driven explosion hurled up ash and mud covering the new crater, the same area that killed eleven sulphur miners during the end of the mining epoch at Whaakari. Image by Geonet. The man activity was on the fourth of August, but the level of tremor is still above normal, a probable sign of rising magma in the system causing steam explosions during its progress. White Island is well known for its high rate of eruptions. It normally erupt very complex lavas pointing to either a mixed heritage of basaltic and andesitic feeder sources, or a complex magmatic system with high fractioning of the magmas. This produces the famous “clean” and “dirty” andesites. The volcano is at best highly unpredictable and can erupt without giving any untoward signs beyond the normal high background level of activity. To go there during an eruptive phase is to be considered very dangerous. Image by Global Volcanism Program taken by Richard Waitt, 1986 (U.S. Geological Survey). The current active area, photograph is from 1986. The same goes for Whaakari as for Tongariro; this is most likely only a pre-cursor phase before the real activity starts. Historically Whaakari has slightly stronger eruptions than Tongariro with the norm being VEI-2 eruptions, but with an upwards trend in strength of the eruptions during the last 170 years with the norm now being medium sized VEI-3s. The last eruption was in 2001 and rated as a VEI-2. But the year before there was a short and brutal VEI-3. And it is fairly indicative of the volcano that it has an upwards trend as the volcanic system evolves. What makes this volcano more prone for larger eruptions than Tongariro is the large (almost limitless) access to water to drive the hydro magmatic processes going on down in the volcano. The currently active crater floor is only 13 meters above sea level. 1 million viewers! It is rather insane that it took us this short time to have 1 million viewers. From the beginning this has been a rather nutty experience. As I was convinced by a few others to create this place I expected a couple of hundred views per day, and a few comments. I never expected to start with 5000 viewers on the first day… And it just continued like that. As I have said many times, this is a group efforts and during the last half a year (slightly more) had a tremendous amount of posts published by many of our members. Keep those lovely posts coming and we will soon pass 2 million! Little known fact, this is also Swedens largest blog… How about that? CARL [link to volcanocafe.wordpress.com] |

SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!! If you missed it last night, I have a new update on the eruption at Tongariro - looks like a hydrothermal explosion: The first eruption at Tongariro in 115 years decided to occur in the middle of the night, but as day broke in New Zealand, we have new details of the eruption from the Te Mari crater. GNS Science released multiple reports on the events of the night of August 6, 2012 – along with a highly informative and easy to understand press conference. In brief, here is what we know about the eruption: A brief explosion occurred at 11:52 PM (NZ time) There were little-to-no precursory activity beyond the increase in seismicity during the weeks before. However, nothing indicated an eruption would occur so quickly (such as volcanic tremor). 15-20 minutes of strong seismic activity followed the eruption The eruption itself likely only lasted a few minutes. There are no indications of new explosions are occurring at the Te Mari crater, but direct observations aren’t possible due to cloud cover. More: [link to www.wired.com] |
