My wife and I are holidaying in Hafnafjorður and were hiking today (Sat 18.08) about 10km from where the swarm occured. We went to Seltun at around 16:00-16:30 where the swarm seems to be centered. We felt nothing during our hike or while at Seltun. However we had visited Seltun just under two weeks ago and today things definitely felt very different. The fumarole at the top of the Seltun complex seemed to be steaming a lot more than it was two weeks ago while the fumaroles at the base of Seltun had virtually no steam coming out of them, yet two weeks ago the situation was reversed. The ones at the bottom were steaming madly and the fumarole at the top was hardly steaming. The mud hole across the road was a gultenous porridge like boiling mass two weeks ago, bubbling away. Today it had completely liquified and had the consistency of watery youghurt with absolutely no steam issuing from it….quite dissappointing. Much more strangely, two weeks ago there were a large group of Horses in the field opposite Seltun who were demonstrativly exhuberant and friendly. When we approached the fence at their field they all rushed over to us to greet us and “hang out with us” for a while. Today however they held back way into the field and totally ignored us, refusing to approach the fence. One or two of them looked like they wanted to approach us but something was holding them back….. we just put it down to them being stand offish….which has definietly not been our experience of Icelandic Horses who seem to crave human companionship at every opportunity. On the way back I thought that the shoreline of Kleifarvatn looked odd. It had some crescent shaped sandbanks exposed just at the shoreline which I hadn’t noticed two weeks ago or even on the journey up to Seltun today…but they may well have been there all along and I just happened to notice them on the journey back.
However although I felt nothing physically I was definitely aware that something just wasn’t right at Seltun. I hasten to add that I was totally unaware of any sismic activity until I looked at the Icelandic Met Service website a few hours later. I wanted to see if anything had happened with Katla…so I was stunned to see that there had been an earthquake swarm at Krýsuvík.

Still some quakes in Mýrdalsjökull, most of them around Austmannsbunga /northeastern Kötlujökull – wasn’t that the place where the mini-jökulhlaup came from in July? [link to www.vedur.is]
And of course also some at Godabunga (as usual), and also one at Fimmvörduháls (near the place of the first Eyjafjallajökull eruption).

Krossá, a river under Godabunga in Thorsmörk, went up today within 2 hours by about 40 cm (140 ->185 cm), and more or less at around the same time (but within some minutes) conductivity from 40 to 85, where it stayed til now. Just now going down a bit. [link to vmkerfi.vedur.is]

Volcano Activity in Mexico on Sunday, 19 August, 2012 at 13:22 (01:22 PM) UTC.

Description
A sharp increase in activity has been observed at Popocatépetl since yesterday. During 17-18 August, 176 mostly small explosions were observed (compared to values of 10-20 for the previous week), and 74 alone during the following 9 hours, i.e. about 1 every 8 minutes. The largest eruption occurred at 20:41 h local time yesterday and threw incandescent bombs to 800 m distance, which landed on the rim of the lower crater. Glow from the summit was visible during clear weather at night.

Lava flow detected at Ecuador’s Tungurahua volcano
Posted on August 19, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
August 19, 2012 – ECUADOR – At 19h36 (local time) on 18 August, a possible lava flow from the summit crater and incandescent lava blocks continuously tumbling down were observed using thermal imagery. The lava flow which some observers also reported seeing by naked eye is emerges from a breach in the sidewall of the crater on the upper NW flank and directed towards the Cusu gorge. Apparently the lava flow stopped after nearly 4 hours of motion, but bad weather conditions make detailed observations difficult. Preceding the effusion of the new flow, there had been a strong increase of activity since 16 August including seismic tremor, steam and ash emissions and loud explosions audible in nearby towns such as Ambato. –Volcano Discovery

Volcanic activity world-wide 18-19 August: El Hierro, Popocatépetl, Nevado del Ruiz, Tungurahua, Santiaguito, Fuego, Pacaya, Ambrym, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Dempo

Sunday Aug 19, 2012 16:15 PM | Age: 11 min

BY: T

The earthquake swarm at El Hierro island in the Canaries seems to be ending or is at least decreasing.

Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador has produced a small lava flow on the upper flank. Following the increase in activity since 16 August, lava has accumulated at the summit crater and overflown its rim. An ash plume is rising from the volcano to an altitude of 27,000 ft (around 7.3 km).

Popocatépetl in Mexico has shown a sharp increase in activity with the frequency of explosions rising from 1 per 1-2 hours to one every 7-8 minutes since Sturday.

In Guatemala, explosive activity at Fuego has been diminishing a bit, but a few weak explosions take place and produce ash plumes rising about 400 m. The lava flow on its east flank is now about 300 m long and sheds frequent incandescent rockfalls from its front. Turbine-noise producing degassing events are heard at intervals of about 2 minutes.

Santiaguito has weak to moderate explosions produce ash clouds rising 400-900 m and causing light ash falls. Weak avalanches occur mostly from the lava flow on the SW flank of the lava dome.

Pacaya volcano stays quiet, but there are weak tremor and some volcano-tectonic quakes related to fluid movements inside the volcano.

No major changes have occurred at Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia. Fluctuating tremor and a few shallow earthquakes are being recorded under Nevado del Ruiz. The volcano emits a strong steam plume which sometimes contains some ash.

A strong SO2 plume from Ambrym (Vanuatu) is visible today.

An ash plume to 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude was observed from Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia) today and yesterday.

Sakurajima volcano produced some more powerful explosions yesterday (3 on one day), with maximum ash cloud altitudes reported at 14,000 ft (4.3 km).

A possible eruption reported from Dempo volcano on Sumatra on 18 Aug in a VAAC report mentioning a possible ash plume to 30,000 ft was confirmed to be false. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Pumice from Undersea Eruption Spreads across South Pacific. The Havre Seamount volcano erupted a tightly-packed raft of floating pumice on July 19 and 20, 2012. Over several weeks, wind and waves dispersed the pumice among the remote Kermadec Islands, northeast of New Zealand. These satellite images show the spread of the pumice.

On july 28, shortly after the eruption, the pumice raft remained compact, albeit twisted by ocean currents. By August 6, the pumice was largely dispersed, spread over an area at least 450 kilometers (280 miles) wide. Filaments of pumice remained in the area on August 13. None appeared to reach Raoul Island, site of a permanently staffed meteorological station.

That is one weird shadow.
It shows as 3 separate locations after one large spike at most likely Fimmvörduhals (head calculation) with a depth of 9 to 12 km.
This one will be interesting to see what they come up with.
The reflections of the quake was, entertaining. It is almost like effect predated causation on this one. One of the more odd ones I have seen, so I could be way off in my small calculations.

Volcanic activity world-wide 20 August: Tungurahua, El Hierro, Popocatépetl, Nevado del Ruiz, Krisuvik, Batu Tara, Sakurajima

Monday Aug 20, 2012 16:17 PM | Age: 23 hrs

BY: T

The eruption of Tungurahua volcano continues with constant ash emission rising 1.5 km above the crater, intermittent moderate explosions, and produces pyroclastic flows of 1.5 km length.

The seismic swarm at El Hierro island continues, but the number of quakes has been decreasing. Yesterday, only 8 weak quakes (all below M2) were recorded. Today there have been 5 quakes so far, and it seems that the strength of the earthquakes is increasing, the latest quake today being a M2.7 event at 20 km depth under the western tip of the island.

The activity of Popocatépetl in Mexico has decreased again after the increase of explosions on 18 Aug. The number of (mostly small) explosions has dropped from about 4 per hour during 18-19 Aug to only one every 2 hours during 19 Aug. A strong SO2 plume was visible on yesterday's NOAA image.

Steam and ash emissions accompanied by varying tremor continue at Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia, some of the seismic stations are out of function due to ash fall. A new series of small quakes SE from and at 1.5-2 km depth beneath Arenas crater has been recorded.

A seismic swarm occurred at Krisuvik volcano in SW Iceland on 18 Aug. More than 40 quakes (mostly very small) occurred at around 5 km depth beneath the volcano. The number of quakes has dropped since.

Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia) volcano continues to show up in Darwin's VAAC messages notifying about ash plumes reaching 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude.

Sakurajima volcano produced 3 more weak explosions with ash clouds reaching 2.4 km altitude during the past 24 hours. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Cleveland Volcano experienced yet another explosion on Friday morning – its twentieth since Christmas.

Cleveland is one of the Aleutian Islands’ most active volcanoes. It’s been on watch for the better part of the past two years, and in June it blew ash 35,000 feet high.

Today’s explosion was small by comparison and didn’t produce a visible ash cloud, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. Since there isn’t any real-time monitoring equipment on Cleveland, the explosion was detected using infrasound and seismic equipment on nearby volcanoes.

Cleveland lies on uninhabited Chuginadak Island, about 115 miles away from Unalaska and 900 miles from Anchorage. While there isn’t a population center near the volcano, it does lie below a major international flight path and could cause major air traffic problems in the event of a serious eruption.

Volcano Eruption in USA on Tuesday, 21 August, 2012 at 02:54 (02:54 AM) UTC.

Description
There has been a small eruption from a remote Alaska volcano. The Alaska Volcano Observatory says in a release that satellite imagery showed a low-level ash cloud from Cleveland Volcano on Sunday. Officials say the cloud dispersed over several hours as it tracked to the southeast, and there were no reports of it from nearby mariners or pilots. The alert level for the volcano was raised in June after a brief eruption and a pilot reporting an ash cloud rising to 35,000 feet. possible.

Minor earthquake swarm reported in southwest Iceland might be related to movement of magma
Posted on August 21, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol

August 21, 2012 – ICELAND – A series of minor earthquakes was picked up by sensor by the geothermal area Krýsuvík on Reykjanes peninsula in Southwest Iceland on Saturday. The strongest of the earthquakes had a magnitude of 2.1 but most of them were below one. The series started shortly before 4 pm and lasted for three hours. The epicenter of the earthquakes was below the southern end of Kleifarvatn Lake, ruv.is reports. Geophysicist Kristín Waagfjörð at the Icelandic Meteorological Office said earthquake swarms like these are very common in the Krýsuvík area. In 2010 and 2011 there was constant uplift at Krýsuvík of a total of eight centimeters. At the end of last year, the land started sinking again. Earth scientists are monitoring the uplift closely. It might either be related to pressure from geothermal heat or magma which could lead to volcanic activity. Volcanologist Haraldur Sigurðsson writes about the conditions at Krýsuvík in the latest issue of the print edition of Iceland Review, and the risk of lava flows reaching the capital. –Iceland Review [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

110 Families Evacuated In Ecuador Eruption! QUITO, Ecuador August 21, 2012, 01:32 pm ET

QUITO, Ecuador — Ecuadorean authorities say 110 families have been evacuated from the vicinity of the Tungurahua volcano, which has been spewing molten rock, ash and lava since the weekend.

Spokeswoman Mercedes Taipe of Ecuador's Geophysics Institute says a column of vapor and ash up to 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) high has characterized the moderate-to-strong eruption.

She said Tuesday that a half-dozen villages are being showered in ash. She had no immediate estimate on economic damage to local farming.

The 16,48-foot (5,023-meter) volcano 84 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Quito has been active since 1999.

In July and August of 2006 eruptions of Tungurahua killed at least four people, left two missing and forced the evacuation of thousands.

Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
Things have also settled down a smidge volcanically as well. After the New Zealand trifecta, we’ve had some rumblings around the globe … so I thought I’d just use today’s post to catch up with some news I’ve seen (or posted links to on Twitter).

Alaska

Cleveland has continued its 2012 pattern of explosive destruction of the summit dome – the volcano experienced yet another small explosion according to AVO. The volcano is remote, so the threat is mainly to air traffic, so Cleveland is watched via satellite for these explosions.

Ecuador

Another restless volcano was moved into a higher alert status after new explosions produced ash fall from a 1.5 km / 5,000 foot plume and pyroclastic flows from Ecuador’s Tungurahua. Most of the english-speaking media on the activity seems to be a string of images from previous eruptions with no real information, but spanish-speaking reports tell of evacuations near the volcano due to the heightened activity. This renewed activity at Tungurahua has apparently caused significant damage to crops and livestock in the area surrounding the volcano.

Explosive activity increases at Ecuador’s Tungurahua Volcano
Posted on August 22, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
August 22, 2012 – ECUADOR - Tungurahua’s eruption continues. This morning, a tall ash plume was rising to 32,000 ft (ca. 10 km) altitude and drifting west. A slight decrease in tremor is visible on the latest seismograms. So far, effects of the eruption have been limited to ash fall. In canton Quero, the ash fall during the past days has damaged more than 5000 hectares of plant cultivations and hit about 2.000 families. In the meanwhile, scientists from the volcano observatory have made an over flight of the volcano and posted the following interesting update (freely translated) for 20-21 Aug: The volcano emits a near constant eruption column, associated with explosions, that reached a maximum height of 5 km and an average height of 1.5 km above the crater, with moderate ash content, drifting to the west. There were no new reports of ash fall. An increase in the number and size of the explosions was observed since 15:00 local time on 20 Aug. Until 16:00 on 21 Aug, there were 16 large explosions producing strong cannon-shot noises heard in villages near the volcano and in cities as far away as Ambato, Riobamba and Miracle. The seismic activity at Tungurahua shows a constant tremor signal associated with steam, gas and ash emissions. Otherwise, the roaring noises have decreased in intensity and duration with respect to the previous days. In the evening observatory staff observed constant expulsion of hot material in jets. Lava blocks landed outside the crater and rolled up to 1.5 km from the top of the volcano’s flanks. An explosion at 14:11 on 21 Aug generated an ash column rising 4 km above the crater that produced a small pyroclastic flow that descended approximately 2.5 km along the Achupashal creek. Thermal images show near continuous explosive activity from the inner crater, ejecting incandescent material onto the upper flanks of the volcano, where temperatures ranged between 116 and 150°C. About 110 families living within close proximity of the volcano have been evacuated. –Volcano Discovery
