In Japan another Volcano seems to be awakening Mount Asama.

Mount Asama is a stratovolcano in Japan ,near the most active of the islands Honshū, approximately 140 km from Tokyo, on the border of Nagano Prefecture and Gunma prefecture and has a height of 2,568 m. The Agency Meteorological of Japan has classified the range as a peak mountain. It is a stratovolcano with two craters, which lies within the remnant Oxbow another oldest stratovolcano, which was destroyed in an eruption about 20,000 years ago, in the late Pleistocene.Webcam volcano mount Asama, column of smoke can be seen….

Its been noted that this quake was at the top of Tanganasoga.

By the way… this last localized event happened just at the top of the Tanganasoga and again been very deep. Apart from being very interesting this process remains to be disconcerting.

This is a view at El Hierro from below. You are right, the 25.3 km earthquake (purple) is deep under Tanganasoga.
[link to i45.tinypic.com]
Although this is quite deep I question that this specific location is of significance, since there have been quite a few deep ones “haloing” the expanding June/July 2012 swarm (blue).

Sotara’s Quakes have kicked it up into a much higher gear than where they’ve previously been. I’m not an expert at reading seismographs, but the last day and a half has been much more intense than where it was previously. See the link below for one of the latest webicorders, and the second link to see the chronological webicorders of Sotara at Ingeominas.

Vatnajökull and Skaftá: The wait for the glacier run (or something else) is still going on. But there are some new and interesting data – which speak very much against a tectonic event in my opinion (no expert). The conductivity of the water has going up suddenly this morning to no less 397 (from around 220) in about 4 hours, and the light absorption from 275 to 578 [link to vmkerfi.vedur.is]

So magmatic activity has heightened somewhere under Western Vatnajökull, because both measurement results are indicating that – though there is not (perhaps yet) a lot more water than normal in Skaftá river.

Peru’s El Misti volcano shaken by swarm of 224 quakes: last major eruption occurred 540 years ago
Posted on August 28, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol

August 28, 2012 – PERU - Peruvian geologists have revealed that recent activity at El Misti signal that the volcano is active. Last Thursday researchers at the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) found that El Misti – located 17 km outside the city of Arequipa – had recently recorded the highest amount of seismic activity than in the past five years. Engineer Orlando Macedo told El Comercio that 224 earthquakes were registered at El Misti – an event known as an earthquake swarm – and which signaled that the volcano was no longer dormant. El Misti, he said, experienced 143 volcano tectonic earthquakes, which were caused by the fracture of rock inside the volcano, due to sudden changes in pressure and temperature. Despite the recent increase in activity, the IGP said there were still no conditions for an eruption to occur at El Misti, which last erupted sometime between 1450 and 1470. For an eruption to happen, Macedo said, El Misti would have to experience continued earthquakes, which “would have to occur after long-term movements of magma, and causing these earthquakes known as tremors, with lava.” –Peru this week

Two days ago, there was again a small earthquake swarm at Krýsuvík volcano, Southwest Iceland. They were at a depth between around 10 and 4 km, and the biggest one was magn. 2.5.

One day before, Icelandic RÚV interviewed Sigrún Hreinsdóttir from IMO about uplift in Krýsuvík. [link to www.ruv.is] She said that there had been subsidence there which had stopped now. Since 2009 there have been alternating phases of uplift and subsidence in Krýsuvík. See: [link to hraun.vedur.is] (the green crosses are Krýsuvík data).

With beginning of 2009 uplift began, stopped and was replaced by subsidence, then uplift started again in 2010 and even more than the year before, but was again replaced by subsidence from May 2010 on, which is now stopped again.
[link to www.ruv.is]

It seems this kind of progression is rather unusual for volcanoes – though it was observed also at Askja and Campi flegrei – if I remember this correctly.

The reasons are not yet known.

Volcanic activity world-wide 29 August 2012: Etna, Stromboli, El Hierro, Popocatépetl, Santiaguito, Fuego, Nevado del Ruiz, Cumbal, Sotará, Galeras, Machin, Nevado del Huila, Tungurahua, El Misti, Sakurajima

Wednesday Aug 29, 2012 17:19 PM | Age: 19 hrs

BY: T

Not much volcanic activity is currently occurring in the world (something that can quickly change). Here are a few updates:

Etna volcano: Short pulses of increasing tremor have reappeared over the past days, but were not sustained, perhaps corresponding to short phases of strombolian activity in Bocca Nuova.

Activity at Stromboli volcano in the Eolian Islands has been at comparably low levels the recent days. Explosion signals and tremor have been weak to moderate INGV reported.

Earthquake activity at El Hierro has been decreasing since yesterday, when there were 8 and today only 2 very small quakes.

Popocatépetl: A slight increase in activity seems to be occurring. There are on average about 1 weak steam explosion per hour, with an increase in frequency last evening. Some of the explosions produce small amounts of ash and plumes up to 1.5 km high, such as one at 03:56 early yesterday. Glowing material can be seen ejected during such events at night. A significant SO2 plume is visible as a bluish haze during clear weather and on satellite images.

Fuego volcano: The lava flow towards the Taniluya canyon is 200 m long and produces small incandescent rockfalls. A weak glow was observed from the crater at night. INISIVUMEH mentions no explosions, but probably, small ones continue to occurr sporadically.
Santiaguito: INSIVUMEH mentions only degassing and a few weak to moderate rock avalanches from the dome, but the lava flows still seem to be active judging from the latest webcam image.

In Colombia, not much has changed at the currently 5 volcanoes on alert:
Galeras produces infrequent gas and steam emissions, such as observed during clear weather on 21 and 26 August. The emission on 26 Aug at 4:30 pm local time contained some ash and was accompanied by a small tremor pulse. Seismicity has been a bit higher than during the previous week, the Pasto observatory reports. Volcanic earthquakes at various locations under the volcano reached a magnitude of 2.5 and depths up to 9 km.

Cumbal volcano had 2 earthquake swarms on 23 and 26 August, with 115 and 94 quakes, respectively. White gas emissions from the El Verde fumarole could be observed on 24 August. INGEOMINAS mintains yellow alert for the volcano.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano has not changed its behaviour, producing a constant weak tremor signal, strong steam and some ash emissions.

Weak seismic unrest continues at nearby Cerro Machin volcano as well, with no significant changes to previous weeks. There are small volcanic quakes clustered at depths between 3-6 km south and southwest under the main summit dome.

Sotarà volcano continues to show unrest. The volcano has produced a total of 71 volcanic quakes were recorded over the past week including 6 between magnitudes between 0.1-1.3 at shallow depths of 2-3 km north of the summit. A possible inflation of the NE sector of the volcano is being detected on tilt meters.

Nevado del Huila has remained stable. During the past week, 84 seismic events were registered and a SO2 flux of 80 tonnes / day measured.

Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador shows an increasing tremor signal which suggests ongoing ash emissions and more explosions, but bad weather prevents direct observations. The recent moderate rain falls have fortunately not caused lahars, IG mentions.

An article in Peruvian press mentions earthquake swarms under El Misti volcano near Arequipa (Peru), a possible sign that the volcano, which has been dormant for 500 years could be reawakening slowly.

Sakurajima volcano remains relatively quiet as well. There were 2 probably weak explosions yesterday, and none so far today. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Yes, in Brennisteinsfjöll system east end. But this was tetonic. You can see that smaller quakes line up north to south – right along surface cracks from older tetonic quakes – some can be seen on this map. [link to hraun.vedur.is]
the one further south-west can (theoretically) give up to seven Richter, but usually area can make up to 6 to 6,5 R (could make crack damage in houses in Reykjavík, but I am not saying one is coming now).

Some more information on the quake in Brennisteinsfjöll at noon:
It was first estimated magn. 4,6 , but was by now downgraded to 4,2, hypocenter at a depth of 5.8 km. Páll Einarsson, Icelandic geologist and professor at Hálskóli Íslands, says it is at the northern end of a big and well known tectonic fissure on the west side of Geitafell. Scientists had been expecting a bigger quake in this area.

The consequences are not yet clear, could be that the tension has been losened from the area, but could also incite another big quake nearby. The aftershocks have been small. It is not probable that this could initiate a volcanic eruption as there are not a lot of connections between such quakes and volcanism.

Glacial flood started coming out of Vatnajokull today, near Hamarinn.

The flood was small but it overflowed abpve bridges and reports of sulphur smell, and there was also a flight over the Hamarinn area, showing where flood originated. The flood is only a consequence of what happened there a few days ago, because nothing particular happened there today, except that the water came out of the ice cap.

It’s just the small Skaftá glacier run, they had to wait for such a long time. Water height now up to 280, and discharge at 200 m3/sec. [link to vmkerfi.vedur.is] A good Skaftá glacier run would discharge around 1.000 m3/sec. and a really good one 2.000 m3/sec. – compared to 45.000 at the infamous Skeidarársandur glacier run from Grímsvötn / Gjálp in 1996.

small harmonic pulse started in Hamarinn and also only lasted a hour or so. probably related to the flood, but I am not sure, could have been after the flood went out, due to release of pressure in the volcano. [link to hraun.vedur.is]

Earthquake swarm awakens Alaskan volcano, dormant for 182 years: alert level raised
Posted on August 31, 2012 by The Extinction Protocol
August 31, 2012 – ALASKA – A series of small earthquakes which began Wednesday night and continued into Thursday near a long-dormant volcanic peak in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands has prompted researchers to raise the alert level for the Little Sitkin volcano. The nearly 4,000-foot-high Little Sitkin volcano is named for the island where it resides, located in the Rat Islands in the Aleutian chain. The volcano has shown little activity since scientists have started observing it, with only three questionable eruptive events at the volcano since that time. The most recent eruption may have come in 1900, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory. However, the Smithsonian Global Volcanism program documents the last eruption as 1830. Still, the AVO page for Little Sitkin mentions there may have been a “cataclysmic eruption” on the island sometime after the last ice age, which ended more than 11,000 years ago. Seismic equipment located near the volcano began detecting a “”warm of high-frequency earthquakes” at about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, the AVO reports. The earthquakes continued through the night into Thursday, prompting the alert level at the volcano being raised. The alert level is currently at yellow, which means that the “volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background level.” Additionally, aircraft traveling in the area are advised to exercise caution. The volcano is located in a remote part of the Aleutians, about 35 miles northwest of the World War II outpost of Amchitka and 200 miles west of Adak. Little Sitkin joins two other Alaska volcanoes, Iliamna and Cleveland, currently sitting at elevated alert levels. –Alaska Dispatch

Three Rumbling Volcanoes: Little Sitkin, Reclus and Tangkubanparahu. This week has seen three lesser-known volcanoes move to a higher alert status after increasing restlessness.

Little Sitkin

This morning, the Alaska Volcano Observatory moved Little Sitkin to Yellow Alert status after a sharp increase in seismicity started yesterday and continued through the night. To their knowledge, nothing has occurred at Little Sitkin beyond this increase in earthquakes, but apparently this activity was enough for them to raise the alert. Like many Alaska volcanoes, Little Sitkin is a stratovolcano sitting within an older caldera system that has not erupted in over 180 years, although fumarolic activity is common in the caldera and on Little Sitkin itself. The volcano is remote – way out in the Aleutian Islands – so the main hazard is to the air traffic that passes over the island chain.

Reclus

Eruptions reader GuillermoChile has done an excellent job of keeping us informed of the rumbling noticed at Reclus in Chile. The volcano is in southern Chile, between Aguilera and Monte Burney in Patagonia and it quite a fascinating feature. It is the likely source of a number of ash layers found across Patagonia, so significant explosive eruptions have come from the Reclus, however the volcano was only recognized as such in 1987. The volcano has been identified as the source of at least 3 historical eruptions, all fairly small at VEI 1-2. Over the summer, earthquakes began to be felt in towns in the region of the volcano (causing quite an increase in anxiety over the source) and a potential for new activity from the Reclus has prompted geologists to visit the volcano later this spring (southern hemisphere). Interestingly, one article mentions that an overflight of the volcano in 2008 spotted cracks on the glaciers that cover the volcano along with traces of ash. However, the direct connection between the seismicity in Patagonia and Reclus is still tenuous, so further observations of the remote volcano will need to be done.
