The location of the swarm is right on the shield volcano Heidin Há, just east from the top crater. That belonged to an eruption of the Bláfjoll system some thousand years ago.

But this could be also tectonic (most likely). Anyways, we are experiencing some increased actviity in Reykjanes in recent years… in all its four volcanoes: Reykjanes, Krisuvik, Bláfjoll and Hengill.

Maar Volcanoes: Odd explosions beneath Earth explained

Posted on October 7, 2012

Lunar Crater maar in Nevada, a maar-diatreme volcano. A new study is shedding light on the explosive mechanism of these volcanoes, which erupt just once before dying.

October 7, 2012 – EARTH - The eruption of a so-called maar-diatreme volcano is short-lived but violent. Magma creeps up through a crack in the Earth’s crust and mixes with water, setting off a series of explosions — as many as a few each hour for several weeks. When the action stops, a crater-topped, rock-filled fracture called a diatreme is left behind. Now researchers are proposing a new way to think about how these structures are formed, which could help geologists predict eruptions and find new sources of diamonds. “Previously it was thought that those explosions started at very shallow levels and got progressively deeper,” geologist Greg Valentine, a professor at the University at Buffalo in New York, told LiveScience. This old model seemed to explain the shape of a diatreme, which sits like an inverted cone beneath a shallow maar, or crater. But that model didn’t match with what geologists were finding at volcanic sites, Valentine said. If the explosions started at shallow levels and moved deeper, shallow rocks would be spewed from the mouth of the volcano first and the deeper rock deposits would pile up on top. At maar sites, however, scientists were finding deep rock fragments mixed mostly with shallow fragments, indicating that explosions occur at essentially every depth throughout the episode. Valentine and James White, an associate professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand, created a new model to account for the apparently more jumbled order of explosions. Their model, published online Sept. 18 by the journal Geology, also shows that individual explosions are relatively small, and shallow explosions are more likely than deep explosions to cause eruptions. The last known maar-diatreme eruption occurred in 1977 in Alaska’s remote Aleutian Range, forming two vents known as the Ukinrek Maars. The threats associated with these volcanoes tend to be localized, but they can still be significant, Valentine said. “These volcanoes can send ash deposits into populated areas. They could easily produce the same effects that the one in Iceland did when it disrupted air travel, so what we’re trying to do is understand the way they behave,” he explained in a statement. –Yahoo News [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

If these quakes get confirmed we will know something knew.
They are right now trending up towards the Theistaeykjar fissure swarm. Seems like both volcanic field noted might belong to Theistareykir. The one closest is known to do that, but, let’s wait and see if we get a bit more of a connection.

look at them. look how precarious they look in that image. tenerife especially. doesn't that look primed to fall? I know it's only an illustration, but it's a good one. ANY quakes shaking Tenerife are something to watch, I think, looking at that image, and given that the edifice ready to fall on Tenerife is perched over a 30 degree slope, the steepest of all the edifices ready to go.

Indonesian volcano spews ash clouds in new eruption

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

JAKARTA — One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes has erupted again, spewing clouds of ash, an official said Monday.

The 1,580-metre (5,214-feet) Mount Lokon on northeast Sulawesi island erupted at 2pm (0700 GMT) on Sunday with thunderous sounds heard as far as five kilometres (three miles) away.

"Lokon has been quite active the past few months. This was the seventh biggest eruption since mid-September," government vulcanologist Farid Bina told AFP from the volcano's monitoring post in North Sulawesi province.

"It produced a loud sound like thunder. But we cannot detect the height of the eruption as thick clouds covered its peak," he said, adding that muddy rains fell in surrounding areas.

There was no plan to upgrade the volcano's alert level despite the series of eruptions, he said, adding that the nearest village of 250 people was outside the 2.5 kilometre danger zone.

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii
Two lava lakes are present at Kilauea volcano, Hawaii. The east pit lava lake in Pu'u O'o crater occasionally flows across the floor of the south pit. The summit lava lake in Halemaumau crater occasionally overflows the inner ledge. The surface of the lava lake varies from 60m to 150 m deep inside the pit. On the east rift zone an active lava flow is located at the base of the pali in the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision. The lava contines to advance towards the ocean. Sulphur dioxide emission was high at 1200 tonnes per day on 28th September 2012.

Volcano Activity in Italy on Friday, 05 October, 2012 at 17:01 (05:01 PM) UTC.

Description
A slight increase in shaking was reported at Etna volcano on the island of Sicily but it does not appear in danger of eruption, volcano experts said Friday. Activity on a recently opened crater has been registered since Wednesday, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The activity has been accompanied by "a slight increase in volcanic shaking," volcano experts said. Etna has experienced nine "eruptive events" this year. The volcano belched a plume of smoke in a full-blown explosion in January that led to the temporary closure of Catania airport.

Volcano Eruption in Indonesia on Sunday, 07 October, 2012 at 15:46 (03:46 PM) UTC.

Description
A volatile volcano in northern Indonesia erupted Sunday, spewing smoke and ash that caused muddy rain to fall in nearby villages, an official said. Mount Lokon in North Sulawesi province rumbled as heavy rain fell around its cloud-covered crater, local monitoring official Farid Ruskanda Bina said. He said the sound was heard 5 kilometers (3 miles) away but the height of the eruption was not visible. The ash made the rain thick and muddy in six villages, Bina said. "Soldiers are distributing masks to the villagers," he said. There was no plan for evacuations because the nearest villages are beyond the danger area, he said. More than 33,000 people live along the fertile slopes of the 5,741-foot (1,750-meter) mountain. Mount Lokon is one of about 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia. Its last major eruption in 1991 killed a Swiss hiker and forced thousands of people to flee their homes.

Volcanic activity world-wide 7 October 2012: Etna, El Hierro, Lokon, Popocatépetl, Batu Tara, Sakurajima, Brenisteinsfjöll, Yellowstone

Sunday Oct 07, 2012 16:05 PM | Age: 16 hrs

BY: T

Increased activity took place in the Bocca Nuova crater of Etna volcano during last night, when the tremor steeply rose. It dropped back to normal levels this morning.

It seems a new earthquake swarm has started at El Hierro volcano yesterday, when the number of quakes rose from an average of about 8-10 to 23 quakes per day. Today, so far there have been 14 events recorded, and their number is likely to rise further. The quakes are very small (mostly under M1, largest M2.0) and are concentrated at about 10 km depth in the western El Golfo and scattered in the SW part of the island at greater depths.

Lokon volcano in North Sulawesi had another explosion this afternoon, which was heard in up to 6 km distance.

Popocatépetl has not changed much. A strong SO2 plume was again visible on yesterday's NOAA satellite image.

Batu Tara produced new explosions with ash at 8,000 ft (2.4 km) altitude.

Sakurajima volcano in Japan remains relatively active. 4 explosions of moderate size occurred yesterday 6 Oct (GMT time). Ash plumes rose to 2.7-3 km altitude 9-10,000 ft).

A new earthquake swarm occurred over the weekend on the Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, on the volcanic rift zone about 12 km SW of Brenisteinsfjöll volcano. The largest quakes was a M3.8 event at 5 km depth on Friday at 19:42 UTC.

A minor seismic swarm occurred at Yellowstone, but falls into what is normal activity at a large active caldera. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Volcanoes of Costa Rica: physical changes induced by the magnitude 7.6 Sámara earthquake on 5 Sep

Saturday Oct 06, 2012 09:12 AM | Age: 1 days

BY: T

Aerial image of the SE sector of Turrialba volcano, taken during an overflight on 7 Sep 2012 (RSN)
Costa Rica's National Seismological Network (RSN) published a detailed report about the changes to the country's active volcanoes induced by the great M7.6 earthquake of September 5 and recommends the access closure to the craters of Rincón de la Vieja and Turrialba volcanoes, which increased activity.

On September 5, 2012 at 8:42 am (local time) there was a great earthquake at 10 km south of Samara on the Nicoya Peninsula with a depth of 20 km, located in the subduction zone between the Cocos and Caribbean plates.

Expert from RSN (University of Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE)), said that there are reports in the literature that suggest evidence that large earthquakes can trigger eruptions of volcanoes: Some cases include the Aso volcano (Japan) and an earthquake in 1914 (Mw = 7.0), Puyehue volcano (Chile) and the Valdivia earthquake (1960, Mw = 9.6), and Karagentang volcano (Indonesia) with the Tohoku earthquake (2011, Mw = 9.0).

According to RSN, also Costa Rica's volcanoes have often produced eruptions linked to large earthquakes. Rincon de la Vieja volcano had a series of major eruptions of magma in 1991, two weeks after the earthquake of 7.7 magnitude earthquake of Limón. In 2009, the M6.2 Cinchona earthquake was followed by a small phreatic explosion from Poas Volcano four days later. The volcano has remained in a state of recurring phreatic eruptions.

The study of the RSN, published yesterday, said that for this reason it is very important to increase routine visits to monitor the active volcanoes even when volcanic systems remain calm. Changes in volcanic activity, after an earthquake of this magnitude, can occur months, even years after the earthquake.

The report goes on to present a summary of field observations taken during the month of September 2012, and aerial images of overflights coordinated with the National Emergency Commission (CNE):

Turrialba volcano activity showed an unusual degassing activity during the weeks after the earthquake, although temperatures of the fumaroles are still the same (≈ 800 ° C for the highest in the small crater that opened in January 2012). Some fractures in the active crater indicate that the rock mass stability remains precarious and small landslides may occur within the same.

For Irazu volcano, its crater lake and fumarolic field showed no significant changes, however there have been a series of earthquakes near the mountain.

At Poas volcano there were a number of felt earthquakes and a distinct change in the lake was noted. A small phreatic eruption occurred between the evening of 6 and early morning of 7 September 2012. Measurements with the thermal camera indicate declining temperatures from dome fumaroles (less than 200° C). At Laguna Caliente lake, increased degassing and upwelling of water with large quantities of floating sulfur were seen on 26 September. The temperature at the lake bottom increased to 150°C at a vent which is producing molten sulfur and has also been the site of previous phreatic explosions. Lake water temperatures remained stable at around 50° C.

Arenal Volcano experienced some small landslides on the slopes due to the instability of the rock mass without showing major changes.

Rincon de la Vieja volcano has a very active hot lake with unusual release of gas compared to the month of April 2012. Its color is a milky gray, due to mixing of sediments and an increase in temperature (48° C). Besides, its degassing activity increased significantly.
It is possible that the energy released by the earthquake of Samara on 5 September 2012 disrupted the volcano's hydrothermal system and at least partly caused the observed changes of increased temperatures of fluids (water and gasses), increased degassing, new fractures, landslides, increased local seismicity and possible phreatic eruptions.
The lake level decreased despite the current rainy season. Around 35,000 cubic meters of water were lost with comparison to the month of April due to the constant evaporation. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Good morning!
If you allow me, I’ll paste here a comment made by Boris over EB, which I think should be of everybody’s knowledge:
On a more serious note – hundreds of staff (including myself) of the INGV in Italy are risking to find themselves without a new contract from 1 January 2013 on. This is a very grave situation, which threatens to completely paralyze not only the lives of the concerned people, but also the functioning of the whole institute, mainly the surveillance of seismic and volcanic activity in Italy. The round-the-clock service in the control rooms of the Earthquake Center in Rome, at the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples, and at the Etna Observatory in Catania might completely break down, and quick response to emerging crises might be hampered. You would be indirectly affected because real-time seismic data and webcams would be taken offline.
In this moment there are continuous meetings between different parties in order to seek for solutions, but my personal feeling, in this moment, is rather dark.
Outrageous!!!!!

Re: World Volcano Activity UPDATE !!! MARAPI AGAIN!!! KATLA AGAIN!!! SWARM STARTING IN ICELAND DORMANT VOLCANO Bláfjoll!!!
Volcano Activity in Indonesia on Friday, 12 October, 2012 at 09:54 (09:54 AM) UTC.

Description
Hundreds of local residents have been forced to evacuate as hot ashes spewed by Mount Rokatenda in Pulue Island, Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara on Thursday. "Volcanic ashes have reached four villages: Nitunglea, Rokirole, Kesokoja and Lidi. Our team has distributed masks and medicine for the residents," Sikka disaster management agency head Silvanus Tibo said on Friday. Rokatenda's volcanic activities have increased since Oct. 1, records show that there have been more than 50 volcanic earthquakes and 15 local tectonic earthquakes coupled with flames. The volcano’s last eruption was on March 23, 1985, with volcanic ashes reaching two kilometers above the mountain’s peak. Rokatenda also erupted during the period of Aug. 4 to Sept.25 1928. Nearly 6,000 people are currently living in four villages surrounding Mount Rokatenda.

Description
Hundreds of villagers near Mount Rokatenda on Palue Island in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara, have been evacuated after the volcano erupted on Thursday. Smoke was seen billowing from the top of Rokatenda, which is still spewing ash, causing panic among the island’s residents. Authorities say they have evacuated all the residents of Awa village, which is nearest to the volcano, and have told nearly 6,000 residents of four other nearby villages to move to safer locations. “We’re prohibiting people from being within a radius of 1.5 kilometers from the mountain,  the head of the Sikka office of the Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Silvanus Tibo, said in Kupang on Friday. “Mount Rokatenda’s activities have been continually increasing over the past few days. It has released [ash] and smoke, so we’ve evacuated people living near the mountain to safer places,  he added. Silvanus said what appeared to be a “huge fire  was seen on top of the volcano, and could be seen by the majority of people on the main Flores Island, south of Palue. He added volcanic activities had been increasing since Oct. 2, and his office had recorded at least 31 related quakes since. Rokatenda is a stratovolcano soaring 875 meters above the sea level. It last erupted in 1985, spewing ash two kilometers away. In 1928, its eruption triggered a tsunami, believed to have killed nearly 300 people.

Volcanic activity world-wide 10-12 October 2012: Paluweh, Sangeang Api, Santorini, Kilauea, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Pacaya, Nevado del Ruiz, Galeras, Nevado del Huila, Cumbal, Machin, Sotarà, El Hierro, Etna

A new eruptive phase began on Thursday, 9th October (or possibly the 8th October) at Paluweh volcano in Indonesia, the volcano has been dormant since 1985. The volcano has shown signs of revival since October 1st. (Thanks to Volcanism Bulletin for the update).
An eruption warning was issed for Sangeang Api volcano in the Banda Sea (aka "Etna of the Banda Sea"), Indonesia, based on increased seismic activity recorded by PVMBG. No surface activity has been detected so far, but a new eruption from the summit lava dome would not be a surprise.

During the (ongoing) VOLSAM comference on Santorini volcano on Santorini from 10-12 Oct where Tom has been taking part, new data and a broad view of current understanding on the seismic-volcanic crisis on Santorini during 2011-2012 (among other subjects) were presented and discussed in detail.
It was confirmed that seismic activity, inflation, increased volcanic gas emissions occurred during Jan 2011-Feb 2012, and then largely ceased, most likely caused by a shallow magma intrusion north of Nea Kameni. At present, the volcano is calm again and monitoring parameters are mostly back to pre 2011 levels. A more detailed summary of some key results will be presented here in the next days.

At Kilauea volcano on Hawai'i: After a short deflation period, inflation of the summit of the volcano has resumed. The summit lava lake in Halema'uma'u fell and rose, and the lava lake in the northeast pit of Pu'u O'o remains active. Lava flows southeast of Pu`u `O`o continued to pool on the coastal plain at the base of the pali, with one branch extending slowly seaward. Seismic tremor levels were low. Gas emissions were elevated. (HVO / USGS)

Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico has suddenly increased its activity since 9 Oct with a steep increase of weak to moderate explosions at a rate of 1-2 per hour. The larger ones produce ash plumes up to 1.5 km high and start to appear in Washington VAAC's messages. The alert level remains unchanged as this still falls into the range of normal fluctuations during the ongoing activity period.

Explosive activity from Fuego volcano in Guatemala has decreased in favor of effusion of a lava flow from the summit area, now reaching about 200 m length towards the Ash Canyon.

Santiaguito: No or very few explosions are happening, the dome is only steaming. Weak avalanches from the (stagnating) lava flows still occur.

Pacaya volcano is steaming at normal levels and continues to show some elevated seismic activity.

A large steam plume is rising Reventador volcano in Ecuador up to about 1.5-2 km from the volcano and sometimes contains ash, suggesting continuing intermittent explosive activity.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to steam and occasionally vents some ash as well. Weak seismic activity has continued throughout the past days.

Nevado del Huila continues to show weak seismic activity and is steaming.

Seismicity at Galeras volcano remains at low energy levels overall with a slight increase against the previous week. Sometimes this seismicity is associated with gas and ash emissions.

Earthquake swarms continue at Cumbal volcano. A small swarm of earthquakes of low energy occurred on October 4th between 09:00 am and 12:30 pm local time when about 50 earthquakes were recorded under the volcano.

Seismic activity at Cerro Machin remains above background, but has been rather calm during the past days after the stronger quakes on 7 and 8 Oct with the following seismic swarm.

Weak seismic unrest continues at shallow depth under Sotará volcano, but is not much above background levels.

A faint red glow is sometimes visible from the summit craters of Etna volcano, probably from Bocca Nuova, where some minor activity might be going on, and a fumarole on top of the SE crater is glowing. Tremor is at very low levels, though. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]
