Volcano Activity in Indonesia on Friday, 12 October, 2012 at 09:54 (09:54 AM) UTC.

Description
Hundreds of local residents have been forced to evacuate as hot ashes spewed by Mount Rokatenda in Pulue Island, Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara on Thursday. "Volcanic ashes have reached four villages: Nitunglea, Rokirole, Kesokoja and Lidi. Our team has distributed masks and medicine for the residents," Sikka disaster management agency head Silvanus Tibo said on Friday. Rokatenda's volcanic activities have increased since Oct. 1, records show that there have been more than 50 volcanic earthquakes and 15 local tectonic earthquakes coupled with flames. The volcano’s last eruption was on March 23, 1985, with volcanic ashes reaching two kilometers above the mountain’s peak. Rokatenda also erupted during the period of Aug. 4 to Sept.25 1928. Nearly 6,000 people are currently living in four villages surrounding Mount Rokatenda.

Description
Hundreds of villagers near Mount Rokatenda on Palue Island in Sikka, East Nusa Tenggara, have been evacuated after the volcano erupted on Thursday. Smoke was seen billowing from the top of Rokatenda, which is still spewing ash, causing panic among the island’s residents. Authorities say they have evacuated all the residents of Awa village, which is nearest to the volcano, and have told nearly 6,000 residents of four other nearby villages to move to safer locations. “We’re prohibiting people from being within a radius of 1.5 kilometers from the mountain,” the head of the Sikka office of the Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Silvanus Tibo, said in Kupang on Friday. “Mount Rokatenda’s activities have been continually increasing over the past few days. It has released [ash] and smoke, so we’ve evacuated people living near the mountain to safer places,” he added. Silvanus said what appeared to be a “huge fire” was seen on top of the volcano, and could be seen by the majority of people on the main Flores Island, south of Palue. He added volcanic activities had been increasing since Oct. 2, and his office had recorded at least 31 related quakes since. Rokatenda is a stratovolcano soaring 875 meters above the sea level. It last erupted in 1985, spewing ash two kilometers away. In 1928, its eruption triggered a tsunami, believed to have killed nearly 300 people.

Volcanic activity world-wide 10-12 October 2012: Paluweh, Sangeang Api, Santorini, Kilauea, Popocatépetl, Fuego, Santiaguito, Pacaya, Nevado del Ruiz, Galeras, Nevado del Huila, Cumbal, Machin, Sotarà, El Hierro, Etna

A new eruptive phase began on Thursday, 9th October (or possibly the 8th October) at Paluweh volcano in Indonesia, the volcano has been dormant since 1985. The volcano has shown signs of revival since October 1st. (Thanks to Volcanism Bulletin for the update).
An eruption warning was issed for Sangeang Api volcano in the Banda Sea (aka "Etna of the Banda Sea"), Indonesia, based on increased seismic activity recorded by PVMBG. No surface activity has been detected so far, but a new eruption from the summit lava dome would not be a surprise.

During the (ongoing) VOLSAM comference on Santorini volcano on Santorini from 10-12 Oct where Tom has been taking part, new data and a broad view of current understanding on the seismic-volcanic crisis on Santorini during 2011-2012 (among other subjects) were presented and discussed in detail.
It was confirmed that seismic activity, inflation, increased volcanic gas emissions occurred during Jan 2011-Feb 2012, and then largely ceased, most likely caused by a shallow magma intrusion north of Nea Kameni. At present, the volcano is calm again and monitoring parameters are mostly back to pre 2011 levels. A more detailed summary of some key results will be presented here in the next days.

At Kilauea volcano on Hawai'i: After a short deflation period, inflation of the summit of the volcano has resumed. The summit lava lake in Halema'uma'u fell and rose, and the lava lake in the northeast pit of Pu'u O'o remains active. Lava flows southeast of Pu`u `O`o continued to pool on the coastal plain at the base of the pali, with one branch extending slowly seaward. Seismic tremor levels were low. Gas emissions were elevated. (HVO / USGS)

Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico has suddenly increased its activity since 9 Oct with a steep increase of weak to moderate explosions at a rate of 1-2 per hour. The larger ones produce ash plumes up to 1.5 km high and start to appear in Washington VAAC's messages. The alert level remains unchanged as this still falls into the range of normal fluctuations during the ongoing activity period.

Explosive activity from Fuego volcano in Guatemala has decreased in favor of effusion of a lava flow from the summit area, now reaching about 200 m length towards the Ash Canyon.

Santiaguito: No or very few explosions are happening, the dome is only steaming. Weak avalanches from the (stagnating) lava flows still occur.

Pacaya volcano is steaming at normal levels and continues to show some elevated seismic activity.

A large steam plume is rising Reventador volcano in Ecuador up to about 1.5-2 km from the volcano and sometimes contains ash, suggesting continuing intermittent explosive activity.

Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to steam and occasionally vents some ash as well. Weak seismic activity has continued throughout the past days.

Nevado del Huila continues to show weak seismic activity and is steaming.

Seismicity at Galeras volcano remains at low energy levels overall with a slight increase against the previous week. Sometimes this seismicity is associated with gas and ash emissions.

Earthquake swarms continue at Cumbal volcano. A small swarm of earthquakes of low energy occurred on October 4th between 09:00 am and 12:30 pm local time when about 50 earthquakes were recorded under the volcano.

Seismic activity at Cerro Machin remains above background, but has been rather calm during the past days after the stronger quakes on 7 and 8 Oct with the following seismic swarm.

Weak seismic unrest continues at shallow depth under Sotará volcano, but is not much above background levels.

A faint red glow is sometimes visible from the summit craters of Etna volcano, probably from Bocca Nuova, where some minor activity might be going on, and a fumarole on top of the SE crater is glowing. Tremor is at very low levels, though. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]

Next eruption could be a mega-event: scientist warns of Fuji eruption chaos

Posted on October 14, 2012

October 14, 2012 – JAPAN - A Japanese scientist has warned Mount Fuji is due for a “big-scale explosive eruption” that could affect millions of people and cause billions of dollars worth of damage. Last month a study found the magma chamber under the mountain has come under immense pressure, which could even trigger a volcanic eruption. It said the added pressure could have been caused by last year’s earthquake, which was followed a few days later by another large tremor directly underneath Fuji. Professor Toshitsugu Fujii, the head of Japan’s volcanic eruption prediction panel, says an eruption could cause chaos and carnage all the way to Tokyo. “Mount Fuji has been resting for 300 years now, and this is abnormal,” he told Saturday AM. “It usually erupts in some form every 30 years. So the next eruption could be a big-scale explosive eruption.” Ever since last year’s massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake off Japan’s north-east, the country’s meteorological agency has been keeping a closer eye on Mount Fuji. Of even greater concern to the agency was a magnitude-6.2 quake right under the volcano a few days after the big one. “It’s known that when a large earthquake happens, it can trigger a nearby volcano to erupt,” Professor Fujii said. “That’s what happened 300 years ago, when Fuji erupted just 40 days after a big quake.” –ABC News [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

68: Indonesia’s Paluweh volcano awakens from 27 year slumber with eruption

Posted on October 14, 2012

October 14, 2012 – INDONESIA - A new eruptive phase began on Thursday, 9th October (or possibly the 8th October) at Paluweh volcano, the volcano has been dormant since 1985. Paluweh is also known as Rokatenda. The volcano has shown signs of revival since October 1st. The MODVOLC (MODIS) detected thermal anomalies on 9th October followed by an emission of large ash plumes that could be seen from Flores Island, plus reports of “huge fire” issuing from the top of the volcano. Several villages reported intense ash fall. 6000 people have been reported to have evacuated the area. Dust masks are being distributed. The head of the East Nusa Tenggara chapter of BNPB, Tini Thadeus, said Rokatenda was currently on Alert Level II status, “Waspada,” out of four statuses, with the fourth being the most dangerous. Tini said two other volcanoes in the province, namely Mount Lewotolok in the district of Lembata and Mount Sirung in the subdistrict of Alor, were on the “Waspada” status as well. –Volcano Discovery [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Massive uplift observed in Andean Mountains due to enlarging magma chamber

Posted on October 14, 2012

October 14, 2012 – BOLIVIA – Geophysicists at University of California, San Diego (UCSD) have identified a unique phenomenon in Altiplano-Puna plateau, located in the central Andes near the borders of Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Magma underneath the Earth’s crust is forcing the ground up in one spot, and at the same time sinking the ground around it. The result is something the researchers have described as the “sombrero uplift,” after the popular Mexican hat. According to their report on the phenomenon, published in the journal Science, the two UC San Diego scientists recorded uplift in the crust that measured about 0.4 inches per year for 20 years across an area 62 miles wide; the surrounding area sunk at a lower rate—about eight-hundredths of an inch. “It’s a subtle motion, pushing up little by little every day, but it’s this persistence that makes this uplift unusual. Most other magmatic systems that we know about show episodes of inflation and deflation,” said Yuri Fialko, a professor of geophysics at UCSD and Planetary Physics at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Fialko and co-author Jill Pearse said the phenomenon was the result of a diapir, or a blob of magma, that rises to Earth’s crust like heated wax inside a lava lamp. Using satellite data from European Remote Sensing (ERS) and Envisat missions, the geophysicists were able to study the uplift in great detail. In 2006, the team asked for the satellites to gather more data from their orbits over Altiplano-Puna. “It was really important to have good data from different lines of sight, as this allowed us to estimate contributions from vertical and horizontal motion of Earth’s surface, and place crucial constraints on depth and mechanism of the inflation source,” Fialko said. “Back in 2006, it looked like the satellites stopped acquiring data from the ascending orbits over the area of interest. Fortunately, ESA was very responsive to our requests, and generated an excellent dataset that made our study possible. Satellite data and computer models allowed us to make the important link between what’s observed at the surface and what’s happening with the magma body at depth,” he added. Fialko said the study’s findings could fuel future research around magmatic events, including the formation of large calderas. Although this diapir in the Altiplano-Puna plateau appears unlikely to cause such a phenomenon—the creation of large calderas, “supervolcanoes,” are highly destructive events that spew thousands of cubic kilometers of magma into the atmosphere. An event of this type would dwarf the Icelandic volcano eruption in 2011 that ejected large amounts of ash into the atmosphere and disrupted global air travel, Fialko said. Diapirs have been known to exist before, but this new study is the first to recognize an active diapir currently rising through the crust. Fialko said a less prominent uplift phenomenon is taking place near Socorro, New Mexico. The Altiplano-Puna plateau is a highly active area for magma and is part of a South American volcanic arc that extends along the northwest side of the continent. Experts have described the area as the largest known active magma body in Earth’s continental crust. –Red Orbit [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

Finally the scales fell from my eyes and I found out how to download the IMO earthquake database [link to hraun.vedur.is] It would have helped if google had told me what Skjálftalisti means .
So here is my first Icelandic plot in the Tjörnes fracture zone where some above 3 magnitude earthquakes occurred. The marker size is proportional to ML and the color to days since July, 12th, 2012. The depth axis is proportional to the latitude. The map (also from IMO) is slightly stretched in NS direction because I fitted it into the square plot (haven´t found out yet how to change that).
