BTW: The hypocenter of the biggest 1838 quake seems to have been very near the locations of the biggest quakes of the ongoing swarm.

And there were some minor swarms also in the spring of 2012:
- in februar: some quakes between 3,0 and 3,5 with hypocenters a bit to the east of the ongoing: [link to www.mbl.is]

TFZ earthquake swarm update at 11:54 UTC

This is short TFZ earthquake swarm update at 11:36 UTC. The strongest earthquake so far was a magnitude Mb5.2. It has been followed by many earthquakes that are 3.0 to 4.8 in magnitude. Number of earthquakes that are below that magnitude is around 300 to 350. But this number is updating constantly so it is going to be outdated once this blog post is up.

This earthquake swarm is not over at current time. But earthquake activity has dropped something for the moment.That might change at any time. Since this earthquake swarm does not show any signs of being over at the moment. There is no risk of volcano activity in this area following this earthquake swarm. Since there are no volcanoes in this area of Iceland. This earthquakes are strike-fault earthquakes. I am going to post more updates on this earthquake activity during the day, or when something major happens in this area.

This earthquake swarm has been felt in Siglufjöður town. The largest earthquake was felt over most of north Iceland. Some minor damage has been reported following that earthquake.

Lava dome on top of Mount Merapi collapses

October 21, 2012 – INDONESIA – Solo, Central Java. A lava dome that formed on top of Mount Merapi following its 2010 eruption has collapsed, prompting volcanology officials to issue a warning on Friday of possible deadly cold lava stream on the mountain slope. Tri Mujianto, from the Merapi mountain observatory in Jrakah, in the Selo subdistrict of Boyolali, said the lava dome had disappeared but he could not say precisely when. “The dome is now no longer there but we were not able to monitor when it collapsed. Some [of the material] may have fallen inside [the crater] while some may have flowed into the channel of Apu River,” he said. They have not been able to determine the cause of the collapse, as there has been no rain in the crater area for days. They also haven’t been able to estimate the volume of cold lava in the collapsed dome. Tri said the alert status for Merapi remained at the normal level but warned that should rains fall over the crater, cold lava stream may flow down through natural river channels. A cold lava stream is congealed lava and other volcanic mud and debris flushed down the slopes of a volcano by heavy rains. “Entering the rainy season, the frequency of cold lava stream is rising. We have checked the conditions at the craters several times and it appears to still be very much unstable. People on the slopes of Merapi, especially those living on the banks of rivers originating from the peak, should remain alert,” he said. Meanwhile, Subandriyo, the head of the Volcanology office in Yogyakarta, said that parts of the lava dome facing Boyolali district had collapsed, and ventured that it was due to its fragile condition. “The collapse was not directly recorded because there were so many small deflagrations. On the scale, they did not even reach one kilometer down the slope,” Subandriyo said. Northern Iceland shaken by moderate earthquakes and tremors

October 21, 2012 – ICELAND – A 4.8 and 5.7 earthquake struck north of Iceland near Siglufjörður, which is home to a thriving community built along the inner coastline. The quakes struck along the northern end of the divergent rift or Mid-Atlantic Ridge that runs through the center of Iceland. The quakes ignited a swarm of hundreds of tremors. A series of 3.0+ magnitude tremors have also occurred in the vicinity of the Krafla volcano, which last erupted in 1985. The Krafla central volcano, located NE of Myvatn Lake, is a topographically indistinct 10-km-wide caldera that is cut by a N-S-trending fissure system. Eruption of a rhyolitic welded tuff about 100,000 years ago was associated with formation of the caldera. There are two other nice connections. First, there was a large earthquake in north Iceland, Kopasker, in 1976, just after the first Krafla rifting events, that would last the following years. This was quite connected as the earthquake happened nearby the volcanic system.

Second, after the large event in Laki, there was a large earthquake series of Iceland, further west, in SISZ southwest Iceland, in 1784, a few months later after the large eruption.

So while after one rifting event, usually nothing else happens, sometimes it does trigger other large events elsewhere.

Just like there were two volcanic eruptions months within the large Chilean earthquakes in 1960 and 2010, and also a large earthquake in Toba following the large 2004 Sumatra earthquake.

Its quite “normal”, a large event tends to de-estabilize other nearby regions.

However this only happens sometimes, its not the rule.

Also a few months following the last Hekla eruption, there was a series of large earthquakes in south Iceland, but the tension was already there. Following the major earthquake, earthquakes and changes occurred in Krisuvik volcano, and since then the Krisuvik volcano has been always restless.

Also, the eruptions in the Westman Islands occurred in 1963 and 1973, in two distinct volcanic systems, after a long period of sleep of thounsand years, and these were only 10 years apart. Surely there was a connection between both.

New earthquake magnitude information

According to news announcement (Icelandic) from Iceland Meteorological Office the largest earthquake in the ongoing earthquake swarm at TFZ had the magnitude of Mb5.6. Currently the earthquake swarm in TFZ is ongoing. This is the largest earthquake in TFZ since the year 1976, when a magnitude 6.2 earthquake did take place not far from Kópasker village.

The earthquake swarm in this area of TFZ is currently ongoing and does not show any signs for now that it is stopping. But earthquakes with magnitude 3.0 and stronger are still taking place and might still take place in the next few hours tod days. Any strong earthquake is going to appear clearly on my geophone network in Iceland. If anything major happens. I am going to post new blog post about it soon as possible. I update my twitter and Google+ when needed.

As far as I understood that, he says that there is not to be expected a volcanic eruption because there could have been an intrusion, but deep in the crust.

He mentions that there were other swarms there in the vicinity, but five km farther from land in 1997.

And he warns that there could be more of these swarms in the near future, esp. also over in Skjálfandi (bay), where they would be nearer to farms and the town of Húsavík so that the region should be watched rather closely.

Luisport - From your experience what does all these mean. Seeing lot of volcanos in errupting stage , Louisana sink hole etc? Have you seen so much activity before ? Do you feel there are strange events hapenning?

No, all this activity in Iceland was not seen from many time. I think this will lead to some volcano activity starting. And yes i'm expecting big events comming near.

There is a very interesting interview with geologist Páll Einarsson at RÚV now: [link to www.ruv.is]

He emphasizes that the ongoing earthquake swarms in the north of Iceland are connected to plate motions and not to some volcanic activity. In the interview he mentions the unusual location of the hypocenters at a junction of Kolbeinsey ridge and the Húsavík Flatey Fault, one of the (three or more) ridges connecting it to the NVZ (Northern Volcanic Zone of Iceland). (For maps, see eg. the literature included by me above.)

The ongoing quakes, acc. to Páll Einarsson, are connected to a slide movement of Eyjafjördur trough (one of the graben structures where the American and European plates are gliding away from each other), whereas the ones in September were strike-slip movements.

The ridge where this is happening is seemingly not connected to any volcanic activity. It is also on a not so important part of the tectonical active region, the most active part is to the north and east of it, around Grímsey, where volcanic activity is to be found additionally.

On the other hand, it is possible that the activity could incite other earthquake activity at other parts of the MAR in Iceland.

Iceland Earthquake Swarm
An earthquake swarm occurred in northern Iceland on 21st October 2012. The nearest volcanoes to the swarm are Kolbeinsey Ridge, Tjörnes Fracture Zone, Theistareykjarbunga, and Krafla. In the last 24 hours there were 378 earthquakes, with 48 greater than magnitude 3.

Lava lake at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii has risen to within 38 m of the summit crater floor. Halemaumau crater is the central depression of Kilauea caldera. From 1905 until 1924 the crater contained an active lava lake up to 500m across. The lava lake briefly returned in 1952 and 1967-68.

Ruang volcano, Sangihe Islands, Indonesia was raised to level 2 alert on 18th October 2012 after an increase in volcanic tremor. A magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred on the previous day, 230 km NNW of the volcano.

A strong seismic swarm is in progress at the Tjörnes Fracture Zone just north off Iceland. The largest event was a felt magnitude 5.2 quake at about 10 km depth.

A small earthquake swarm occurred on Saturday at Kverkfjoell volcano in eastern Iceland with about 20 quakes. The largest was a magnitude 2.6 event at 1.1 km depth.
This swarm is similar to several ones in the past years and could indicate a small magma intrusion under the volcano.

Weak strombolian activity from Etna volcano's Bocca Nuova has been observed again last night.

Activity continues to increase at Popocatépetl volcano in Mexico. The number of explosions has increased a lot in frequency: 127 occurred in 24 hours alone between 19-20 Oct and some ejected incandescent material up to 1 km distance, showering the upper part of the cone. Ash plumes rose to about 1 km during several events.

Fuego volcano's lava flow towards the Ash Canyon extends to 1,000 meters length and incandescent blocks roll from its flank to the edge of vegetation. Weak explosions produced small gray ash plumes rising 600 m.

A small ash explosion occurred at Santiaguito earlier today.

In Colombia, Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to produce a significant steam plume and elevated SO2 quantities. Seismic activity remains low but above background.

Elevated seismic activity continues at Cerro Machin volcano in Colombia as well.

The lava dome of Reventador volcano in Ecuador is growing in the summit crater and the volcano produces a significant steam plume and occasional explosions, although these are not often seen as the volcano is usually in clouds.
IG has recently repaired the seismic station and records more than 100 signals, mostly long-periods on a daily basis.

Alaid volcano in the Northern Kuriles continues to show a thermal hot spot.

Raung volcano in East Java (not to be confused with Ruang volcano in the Sangihe islands) began to show increased seismicity since the 17 September. Small white plumes were seen rising to heights between 50-75 M above the crater.

The lava dome of Merapi volcano in Central Java, Indonesia, who occupied the summit crater partially collapsed at an unknown date but very recently (probably in October because it was still seen in Sep).

A strong SO2 plume is visible from Nyiragongo and/or neighboring Nymuragira volcano in the DR Congo.

A strong SO2 plume can also be seen from Ambrym volcano on Vanuatu today. Several small lava lakes remain active there.

Sakurajima volcano has had "normal" levels of activity with 1-2 moderate explosions (ash plumes to 7-8,000 ft /2-2.4 km altitude) over the past days. [link to www.volcanodiscovery.com]
